This goal of the paper is to show that the automorphisms of the complex of curves in a surface are induced by the self-homeomorphisms of the surface except the surface is the 2-holed torus.

The Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the Cohn-Vossen inequality show that the only complete surface with positive curvature is either the sphere, RP2, or the plane. In higher dimension, the curvature tensor is far more complicated. There are several commonly used partial components of the curvature tensor that had been studied for the whole century. The simplest one is the scalar curvature which is the average of all curvatures at one point. It appeared in the Hilbert action for general relativity. This was studied extensively in connection with general relativity.

Finding surface mappings with least distortion arises from many applications in various fields. Extremal Teichm ller maps are surface mappings with least conformality distortion. The existence and uniqueness of the extremal Teichm ller map between Riemann surfaces of finite type are theoretically guaranteed [1]. Recently, a simple iterative algorithm for computing the Teichm ller maps between connected Riemann surfaces with given boundary value was proposed in [11]. Numerical results was reported in the paper to show the effectiveness of the algorithm. The method was successfully applied to landmark-matching registration. The purpose of this paper is to prove the iterative algorithm proposed in [11] indeed converges.

Given a loop on a surface, its homotopy class can be specified as a word consisting of letters representing the homotopy group generators. One of the interesting problems is how to compute the shortest word for a given loop. This is an NP-hard problem in general. However, for a closed surface that allows a hyperbolic metric and is equipped with a canonical set of fundamental group generators, the shortest word problem can be reduced to finding the shortest loop that is homotopic to the given loop, which can be solved efficiently. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm to compute the shortest words for loops given on triangulated surface meshes. The design of this algorithm is inspired and guided by the work of Dehn and BirmanSeries. Registration, which aims to find an optimal 1-1 correspondence between shapes, is an important process in different research areas. Conformal mappings have been widely used to obtain a diffeomorphism between shapes that minimizes angular distortion. Conformal registrations are beneficial since it preserves the local geometry well. However, when landmark constraints are enforced, conformal mappings generally do not exist. This motivates us to look for a unique landmark matching quasi-conformal registration, which minimizes the conformality distortion. Under suitable condition on the landmark constraints, a unique diffeomporphism, called the Teichmller extremal mapping between two surfaces can be obtained, which minimizes the maximal conformality distortion. In this paper, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm, called the Quasi-conformal (QC) iterations, to compute the Teichmller mapping. The basic idea is to represent the set of diffeomorphisms using Beltrami coefficients (BCs), and look for an optimal BC associated to the desired Teichmller mapping. The associated diffeomorphism can be efficiently reconstructed from the optimal BC using the Linear Beltrami Solver (LBS). Using BCs to represent diffeomorphisms guarantees the diffeomorphic property of the registration. Using our proposed method, the Teichmller mapping can be accurately and efficiently computed within 10 seconds. The obtained registration is guaranteed to be bijective. WE CONSIDER Haken manifolds M. That is three manifolds which are compact, irreducible, orientable, and sufficiently 1arge. S 8M may or may not be empty. This class of 3-manifolds shares many properties with closed surfaces (# S2 or RP2). On an algebraic level, both are examples of K (T, 1)s. More geometrically the hierarchy structure of a Haken manifold [9] is analogous to a sequence of cuts turning a surface into a disk. NRODUCTION LET y be a rectifiable Jordan curve in three-dimensional euclidean space. Answering an old question, whether y can bound a surface with minimal area, Douglas [l I] and Rad6 [45](independently) found a minimal surface spanning y which is parametrized by the disk. This minimal surface has minimal area among all Lipschitz maps from the disk into R3 which span y. The question whether this solution has branch points or not was finally settled by Osserman [42], who proved that there are no interior true branch points, and by Gulliver [lS], who proved that there are no interior false branch points.

In this paper the authors study the hyperbolic geometric flow on Riemann surfaces. This new nonlinear geometric evolution equation was recently introduced by the first two authors, motivated by Einstein equation and Hamilton's Ricci flow. In this paper we introduce the hyperbolic mean curvature flow and prove that the corresponding system of partial differential equations is strictly hyperbolic, and based on this, we show that this flow admits a unique short-time smooth solution and possesses the nonlinear stability defined on the Euclidean space with dimension larger than 4. We derive nonlinear wave equations satisfied by some geometric quantities related to the hyperbolic mean curvature flow. Moreover, we also discuss the relation between the equations for hyperbolic mean curvature flow and the equations for extremal surfaces in the Minkowski spacetime.

Integral simplicial volume is a homotopy invariant of oriented closed connected manifolds, defined as the minimal weighted number of singular simplices needed to represent the fundamental class with integral coefficients. We show that odd-dimensional spheres are the only manifolds with integral simplicial volume equal to 1. Consequently, we obtain an elementary proof that, in general, the integral simplicial volume of (triangulated) manifolds is not computable.

We will show that for any noncompact arithmetic hyperbolic m-manifold with m>3, and any compact arithmetic hyperbolic m-manifold with m > 4 that is not a 7-dimensional one defined by octonions, its fundamental group is not locally extended residually finite (LERF). The main ingredient in the proof is a study on abelian amalgamations of hyperbolic 3-manifold groups. We will also show that a compact orientable irreducible 3-manifold with empty or tori boundary supports a geometric structure if and only if its fundamental group is LERF.

We investigate spectral properties of the Laplacian in <i>L</i>² (<i>Q</i>), where <i>Q</i> is a tubular region in ³ of a fixed cross section, and the boundary conditions combined a Dirichlet and a Neumann part. We analyze two complementary situations, when the tube is bent but not twisted, and secondly, it is twisted but not bent. In the first case we derive sufficient conditions for the presence and absence of the discrete spectrum showing, roughly speaking, that they depend on the direction in which the tube is bent. In the second case we show that a constant twist raises the threshold of the essential spectrum and a local slowndown of it gives rise to isolated eigenvalues. Furthermore, we prove that the spectral threshold moves up also under a sufficiently gentle periodic twist.

We introduce a new geometric flow, called the chord shortening flow, which is the negative gradient flow for the length functional on the space of chords with end points lying on a fixed submanifold in Euclidean space. As an application, we give a simplified proof of a classical theorem of Lusternik and Schnirelmann (and a generalization by Riede and Hayashi) on the existence of multiple orthogonal geodesic chords. For a compact convex planar domain, we show that any convex chord not orthogonal to the boundary would shrink to a point in finite time under the flow.

We construct a new family of high genus examples of free boundary minimal surfaces in the Euclidean unit 3-ball by desingularizing the intersection of a coaxial pair of a critical catenoid and an equatorial disk. The surfaces are constructed by singular perturbation methods and have three boundary components. They are the free boundary analogue of the Costa-Hoffman-Meeks surfaces and the surfaces constructed by Kapouleas by desingularizing coaxial catenoids and planes. It is plausible that the minimal surfaces we constructed here are the same as the ones obtained recently by Ketover using the min-max method.

In 1960s, Almgren initiated a program to find minimal hypersurfaces in compact manifolds using min-max method. This program was largely advanced by Pitts and Schoen-Simon in 1980s when the manifold has no boundary. In this paper, we finish this program for general compact manifold with nonempty boundary. As a result, we prove the existence of a smooth embedded minimal hypersurface with free boundary in any compact smooth Euclidean domain. An application of our general existence result combined with the work of Marques and Neves shows that for any compact Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and convex boundary, there exist infinitely many embedded minimal hypersurfaces with free boundary which are properly embedded.

In this paper the existence of positive 2\pi -periodic solutions to the ordinary differential equation \begin{equation*} u^{\prime\prime}+u=\frac{f}{u^3} \ \textrm{ in } \mathbb{R} \end{equation*}is studied, where 2\pi is a positive 2\pi -periodic smooth function. By virtue of a new generalized Blaschke鈥揝antal贸 inequality, we obtain a new existence result of solutions.

In this paper we study the solvability of the rotationally symmetric centroaffine Minkowski problem. By delicate blow-up analyses, we remove a technical condition in the existence result obtained by Lu and Wang [30].

In this paper the Orlicz鈥揗inkowski problem, a generalization of the classical Minkowski problem, is studied. Using the variational method, we obtain a new existence result of solutions to this problem for general measures.

The centroaffine Minkowski problem is studied, which is the critical case of the <i>L</i>_<i>p</i>-Minkowski problem. It admits a variational structure that plays an important role in studying the existence of solutions. In this paper, we find that there is generally no maximizer of the corresponding functional for the centroaffine Minkowski problem.
