In this paper, we extend the high order finite-difference method with subcell resolution (SR) for two-species stiff one-reaction models to multispecies and multireaction chemical reactive flows, which are significantly more difficult because of the multiple scales generated by different reactions. For reaction problems, when the reaction time scale is very small, the reaction zone scale is also small and the governing equations become very stiff. Wrong propagation speed of discontinuity may occur due to the underresolved numerical solution in both space and time. The present SR method for reactive Euler system is a fractional step method. In the convection step, any high order shock-capturing method can be used. In the reaction step, an ODE solver is applied but with certain computed flow variables in the shock region modified by the Harten subcell resolution idea. Several numerical examples of multispecies and multireaction reactive flows are performed in both one and two dimensions. Studies demonstrate that the SR method can capture the correct propagation speed of discontinuities in very coarse meshes.

In this paper, we develop and analyze a new multiscale discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for one-dimensional stationary Schr\"{o}dinger equations with open boundary conditions \bo{which have highly oscillating solutions}. Our method uses a smaller finite element space than the WKB local DG (WKB-LDG) method while achieving the same order of accuracy with no resonance errors. We prove that the DG approximation converges optimally with respect to the mesh size $h$ in $L^2$ norm without the typical constraint \bo{that $h$ has to be smaller than the wave length}. Numerical experiments were carried out to verify the second order optimal convergence rate of the method and to demonstrate its ability to capture oscillating solutions on coarse meshes in the applications to Schr\"{o}dinger equations.

We propose a generalized multiscale finite element method (GMsFEM) based on clustering algorithm to study the elliptic PDEs with random coefficients in the multi-query setting. Our method consists of offline and online stages. In the offline stage, we construct a small number of reduced basis functions within each coarse grid block, which can then be used to approximate the multiscale finite element basis functions. In addition, we coarsen the corresponding random space through a clustering algorithm. In the online stage, we can obtain the multiscale finite element basis very efficiently on a coarse grid by using the pre-computed multiscale basis. The new GMsFEM can be applied to multiscale SPDE starting with a relatively coarse grid, without requiring the coarsest grid to resolve the smallest-scale of the solution. This is an extension of our earlier work \cite{DS} in which a high order stable method was constructed for solving hyperbolic conservation laws on arbitrarily distributed point clouds. %The initial condition is given on such a point cloud, %and the algorithm solves for point values of the solution at %later time also on this point cloud. An algorithm of building a suitable polygonal mesh based on the random points was given and the traditional discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method was adopted on the constructed polygonal mesh. Numerical results in \cite{DS} show that the current scheme will generate spurious numerical oscillations when dealing with solutions containing strong shocks. In this paper, we adapt a simple weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) limiter, originally designed for DG schemes on two-dimensional unstructured triangular meshes \cite{ZZSQ}, to our high order method on polygonal meshes. The objective of this simple WENO limiter is to simultaneously maintain uniform high order accuracy of the original method in smooth regions and control spurious numerical oscillations near discontinuities. The WENO limiter we adopt is particularly simple to implement and will not harm the conservativeness and compactness of the original method. Moreover, we also extend the maximum-principle-satisfying limiter for the scalar case and the positivity-preserving limiter for the Euler system to our method. Numerical results for both scalar equations and Euler systems of compressible gas dynamics are provided to illustrate the good behavior of these limiters.

In this paper, a mathematical analysis of the popular carpet cloak model is carried out. The well-posedness of the model is first proved, and then a finite element time-domain method is developed for solving this model. Three carpet cloak simulations are demonstrated to show the effectiveness of our model and the developed algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first mathematical analysis carried out for the carpet cloak model. The numerical simulation using edge elements for the carpet cloak model is also original.
