We characterize mappings$S$_{$i$}and$T$_{$i$}, not necessarily linear, from sets $\mathcal {J}_{i}$ ,$i$=1,2, onto multiplicative subsets of function algebras, subject to the following conditions on the peripheral spectra of their products:$σ$_{$π$}($S$_{1}($a$)$S$_{2}($b$))⊂$σ$_{$π$}($T$_{1}($a$)$T$_{2}($b$)) and$σ$_{$π$}($S$_{1}($a$)$S$_{2}($b$))∩$σ$_{$π$}($T$_{1}($a$)$T$_{2}($b$))≠∅, $a\in \mathcal {J}_{1}$ , $b\in \mathcal {J}_{2}$ . As a direct consequence we obtain a large number of previous results about mappings subject to various spectral conditions.

We discuss the boundary behavior of functions in star-invariant subspaces ($BH$^{2})^{⊥}, where$B$is a Blaschke product. Extending some results of Ahern and Clark, we are particularly interested in the growth rates of functions at points of the spectrum of$B$where$B$does not admit a derivative in the sense of Carathéodory.

For the classical space of functions with bounded mean oscillation, it is well known that $\operatorname{VMO}^{**} = \operatorname{BMO}$ and there are many characterizations of the distance from a function$f$in $\operatorname{BMO}$ to $\operatorname{VMO}$ . When considering the Bloch space, results in the same vein are available with respect to the little Bloch space. In this paper such duality results and distance formulas are obtained by pure functional analysis. Applications include general Möbius invariant spaces such as$Q$_{$K$}-spaces, weighted spaces, Lipschitz–Hölder spaces and rectangular $\operatorname{BMO}$ of several variables.

It is proved that the natural embedding of a separable Banach space$X$into the corresponding Bourgain–Pisier space extends $\mathcal{L}_{\infty}$ -valued operators.

We calculate the local Fourier transforms for connections on the formal punctured disk, reproducing the results of J. Fang and C. Sabbah using a different method. Our method is similar to Fang’s, but more direct.

In this paper we consider various aspects of generalized invertibility of the operator matrixacting on a Banach space$X$⊕$Y$.

We consider the convolution operators in spaces of functions which are holomorphic in a bounded convex domain in ℂ^{$n$}and have a polynomial growth near its boundary. A characterization of the surjectivity of such operators on the class of all domains is given in terms of low bounds of the Laplace transformation of analytic functionals defining the operators.

In this paper, we consider the continuity property of pseudo-differential operators with symbols whose Fourier transforms have compact support. As applications, we obtain the$L$^{$p$}-boundedness for symbols in Besov spaces and in modulation spaces.

Let $A$ be a complex, commutative unital Banach algebra. We introduce two notions of exponential reducibility of Banach algebra tuples and present an analogue to the Corach-Suárez result on the connection between reducibility in $A$ and in $C(M(A))$ . Our methods are of an analytical nature. Necessary and sufficient geometric/topological conditions are given for reducibility (respectively reducibility to the principal component of $U_{n}(A)$ ) whenever the spectrum of $A$ is homeomorphic to a subset of $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ .

We prove that for any free ergodic probability measure-preserving action $${\mathbb{F}_n \curvearrowright (X, \mu)}$$ of a free group on$n$generators $${\mathbb{F}_n, 2\leq n \leq \infty}$$ , the associated group measure space II_{1}factor $${L^\infty (X)\rtimes \mathbb{F}_n}$$ has$L$^{∞}($X$) as its unique Cartan subalgebra, up to unitary conjugacy. We deduce that group measure space II_{1}factors arising from actions of free groups with different number of generators are never isomorphic. We actually prove unique Cartan decomposition results for II_{1}factors arising from arbitrary actions of a much larger family of groups, including all free products of amenable groups and their direct products.

The analyticity of the Stokes semigroup with the Dirichlet boundary condition is established in spaces of bounded functions when the domain occupied with fluid is bounded or more generally admissible which admits a special estimate for the Helmholtz decomposition. The proof is based on a blow-up argument. This is the first proof of the analyticity in spaces of bounded functions which was left open more than thirty years.

We prove uniqueness of ground state solutions$Q$=$Q$(|$x$|) ≥ 0 of the non-linear equation $$(-\Delta)^s Q+Q-Q^{\alpha+1}= 0 \quad {\rm in} \, \mathbb{R},$$ where 0 <$s$< 1 and 0 <$α$< 4$s$/(1−2$s$) for $${s<\frac{1}{2}}$$ and 0 <$α$<$∞$for $${s\geq \frac{1}{2}}$$ . Here (−Δ)^{$s$}denotes the fractional Laplacian in one dimension. In particular, we answer affirmatively an open question recently raised by Kenig–Martel–Robbiano and we generalize (by completely different techniques) the specific uniqueness result obtained by Amick and Toland for $${s=\frac{1}{2}}$$ and$α$= 1 in [5] for the Benjamin–Ono equation.

The tip multifractal spectrum of a 2-dimensional curve is one way to describe the behavior of the uniformizing conformal map of the complement near the tip. We give the tip multifractal spectrum for a Schramm–Loewner evolution (SLE) curve, we prove that the spectrum is valid with probability 1, and we give applications to the scaling of harmonic measure at the tip.

For any unital separable simple infinite-dimensional nuclear$C$^{∗}-algebra with finitely many extremal traces, we prove that $$ \mathcal{Z} $$ -absorption, strict comparison and property (SI) are equivalent. We also show that any unital separable simple nuclear$C$^{∗}-algebra with tracial rank zero is approximately divisible, and hence is $$ \mathcal{Z} $$ -absorbing.

We construct inner amenable groups$G$with infinite conjugacy classes and such that the associated II_{1}factor has no non-trivial asymptotically central elements, i.e. does not have property Gamma of Murray and von Neumann. This solves a problem posed by Effros in 1975.

If$X$is a closed subset of the real line, denote by$G$_{$X$}the supremum of the size of the gap in the Fourier spectrum of a measure, taken over all non-trivial finite complex measures supported on$X$. In this paper we attempt to find$G$_{$X$}in terms of$X$.

Kadison and Kastler introduced a natural metric on the collection of all$C$*-subalgebras of the bounded operators on a separable Hilbert space. They conjectured that sufficiently close algebras are unitarily conjugate. We establish this conjecture when one algebra is separable and nuclear. We also consider one-sided versions of these notions, and we obtain embeddings from certain near inclusions involving separable nuclear$C$*-algebras. At the end of the paper we demonstrate how our methods lead to improved characterisations of some of the types of algebras that are of current interest in the classification programme.

This paper resolves a number of problems in the perturbation theory of linear operators, linked with the 45-year-old conjecure of M. G. Kreĭn. In particular, we prove that every Lipschitz function is operator-Lipschitz in the Schatten–von Neumann ideals$S$^{$α$}, 1 <$α$< ∞. Let $ \gamma = \frac{1}{2}\left( {1 + \sqrt {5} } \right) $ denote the golden ratio. H. Davenport and W. M. Schmidt showed in 1969 that, for each non-quadratic irrational real number ξ, there exists a constant$c$> 0 with the property that, for arbitrarily large values of$X$, the inequalities $ \left| {{x_0}} \right| \leqslant X,\,\,\,\left| {{x_0}\xi - {x_1}} \right| \leqslant c{X^{{{{ - 1}} \left/ {\gamma } \right.}}}\,\,\,{\text{and}}\,\,\,\left| {{x_0}{\xi^2} - {x_2}} \right| \leqslant c{X^{{{{ - 1}} \left/ {\gamma } \right.}}} $ admit no non-zero solution $ \left( {{x_0},{x_1},{x_2}} \right) \in {\mathbb{Z}^3} $ . Their result is best possible in the sense that, conversely, there are countably many non-quadratic irrational real numbers ξ such that, for a larger value of c, the same inequalities admit a non-zero integer solution for each$X$≥ 1. Such$extremal$numbers are transcendental and their set is stable under the action of $ {\text{G}}{{\text{L}}_2}\left( \mathbb{Z} \right) $ on $ \mathbb{R}\backslash \mathbb{Q} $ by linear fractional transformations. In this paper, it is shown that there exist extremal numbers ξ for which the Lagrange constant ν(ξ) = liminf_{$q$→∞}$q$||$q$ξ|| is $ \frac{1}{3} $ , the largest possible value for a non-quadratic number, and that there is a natural bijection between the $ {\text{G}}{{\text{L}}_2}\left( \mathbb{Z} \right) $ -equivalence classes of such numbers and the non-trivial solutions of Markoff’s equation.
