In this paper, we discuss the Weyl problem in warped product spaces. We apply the method of continuity and prove the openness of the Weyl problem. A counterexample is constructed to show that the isometric embedding of the sphere with canonical metric is not unique up to an isometry if the ambient warped product space is not a space form. Then, we study the rigidity of the standard sphere if we fix its geometric center in the ambient space. Finally, we discuss a Shi-Tam type of inequality for the Schwarzschild manifold as an application of our findings.

Nous montrons que$T$admet un cône tangent (limite de la famille de ses homothétiques), dès que les masses projectives$v$_{T}(r) convergent assez vite vers$V$_{T}(0) pour que ($v$_{T}(r)−$v$_{T}(0))/$r$soit localement sommable en$r$=0. Cette condition suffisante est optimale: nous construisons des courants de bidegré (1, 1) n'ayant pas de cône tangent, tels que l'intégrale de ($v$_{T}(r)−$v$_{T}(0))/$r$soit aussi peu divergente qu'on le souhaite. Lorsque$T$est le courant d'intégration sur un ensemble analytique, on vérifie que$v$_{T}(r)−$v$_{T}(0)=0$r$^{ε}), ce qui redonne le théorème de Thie-King sur l'existence du cône tangent.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the problem of finding a common element of the set of fixed points <i>F</i>(<i>S</i>) of a nonexpansive mapping <i>S</i> and the set of solutions _<i>A</i> of the variational inequality for a monotone, Lipschitz continuous mapping <i>A</i>. We introduce a hybrid extragradient-like approximation method which is based on the well-known extragradient method and a hybrid (or outer approximation) method. The method produces three sequences which are shown to converge strongly to the same common element of {F(S)\cap\Omega_{A}}. As applications, the method provides an algorithm for finding the common fixed point of a nonexpansive mapping and a pseudocontractive mapping, or a common zero of a monotone Lipschitz continuous mapping and a maximal monotone mapping.

In [8], Hitchin proved that a compact K/ihlerian twistor space is in fact a projective algebraic manifold. Moreover, it is the twistor space associated to either the Euclidean 4-sphere S 4 or the complex projective plane CF 2 with Fubini-Study metric. The twistor spaces are 3 and the flag of lines in~ p2 respectively. In [10, 11], the author proved the existence of self-dual metric with positive scalar curvature on the connected-sums of two or three copies of the complex projective planes. Their twistor spaces are Moish6zon spaces. In fact, they are the small resolution of the intersection of two quadrics in~ ps with four nodes and the double covering of CP 3 branched along a quartic with thirteen nodes. Recently, the joint work of Donaldson and Friedman [3] produced a general procedure to construct new twistor spaces and hence self-dual manifolds. This paper presents a marching method for computing intersection curves between two solids represented by subdivision surfaces of Catmull-Clark or Loop type. It can be used in trimming and boolean operations for subdivision surfaces. The main idea is to apply a marching method with geometric interpretation to trace the intersection curves. We first determine all intersecting regions, then find pairs of initial intersection points, and trace the intersection curves from the initial intersection points. Various examples are given to demonstrate the robustness and efficiency of our algorithm.

This paper addresses the problem of approximate merging of two adjacent B-spline curves into one B-spline curve. The basic idea of the approach is to find the conditions for precise merging of two B-spline curves, and perturb the control points of the curves by constrained optimization subject to satisfying these conditions. To obtain a merged curve without superfluous knots, we present a new knot adjustment algorithm for adjusting the end k knots of a kth order B-spline curve without changing its shape. The more general problem of merging curves to pass through some target points is also discussed.

In the context of two illustrative examples from supersymmetric quantum mechanics we show that the semiclassical analysis of the path integral requires complexification of the configuration space and action, and the inclusion of complex saddle points, even when the parameters in the action are real. We find new exact complex saddles, and show that without their contribution the semi-classical expansion is in conflict with basic properties such as positive-semidefiniteness of the spectrum, and constraints of supersymmetry. Generic saddles are not only complex, but also possibly multi-valued, and even singular. This is in contrast to instanton solutions, which are real, smooth, and single-valued. The multi-valuedness of the action can be interpreted as a hidden topological angle, quantized in units of π in supersymmetric theories. The general ideas also apply to non-supersymmetric theories.

We prove the convergence of a discontinuous Galerkin method approximating the 2-D incompressible Euler equations with discontinuous initial vorticity:$omega_0 in L^2(Omega)$. Furthermore, when $omega_0 in L^infty(Omega)$, the whole sequence is shown to be strongly convergent. This is the first convergence result in numerical approximations of this general class of discontinuous flows. Some important flows such as vortex patches belong to this class.

In this paper, we introduce a new adaptive data analysis method to study trend and instantaneous frequency of nonlinear and nonstationary data. This method is inspired by the Empirical Mode Decomposition method (EMD) and the recently developed compressed (compressive) sensing theory. The main idea is to look for the sparsest representation of multiscale data within the largest possible dictionary consisting of intrinsic mode functions of the form {a(t) cos(θ(t))}, where a ∈ V (θ), V (θ) consists of the functions smoother than cos(θ(t)) and θ   0. This problem can be formulated as a nonlinear l0 optimization problem. In order to solve this optimization problem, we propose a nonlinear matching pursuit method by generalizing the classical matching pursuit for the l0 optimization problem. One important advantage of this nonlinear matching pursuit method is it can be implemented very efficiently and is very stable to noise. Further, we provide an error analysis of our nonlinear matching pursuit method under certain scale separation assumptions. Extensive numerical examples will be given to demonstrate the robustness of our method and comparison will be made with the state-of-the-art methods. We also apply our method to study data without scale separation, and data with incomplete or under-sampled data.

This paper is dedicated to the Orlicz-Petty bodies. We first propose the homogeneous Orlicz affine and geominimal surface areas, and establish their basic properties such as homogeneity, affine invariance and affine isoperimetric inequalities. We also prove that the homogeneous geominimal surface areas are continuous, under certain conditions, on the set of convex bodies in terms of the Hausdorff distance. Our proofs rely on the existence of the Orlicz-Petty bodies and the uniform boundedness of the Orlicz-Petty bodies of a convergent sequence of convex bodies. Similar results for the nonhomogeneous Orlicz geominimal surface areas are proved as well.

In an event-related functional MRI data analysis, an accurate and robust extraction of the hemodynamic response function (HRF) and its associated statistics (e.g., magnitude, width, and time to peak) is critical to infer quantitative information about the relative timing of the neuronal events in different brain regions. The aim of this paper is to develop a multiscale adaptive smoothing model (MASM) to accurately estimate HRFs pertaining to each stimulus sequence across all voxels. MASM explicitly accounts for both spatial and temporal smoothness information, while incorporating such information to adaptively estimate HRFs in the frequency domain. One simulation study and a real data set are used to demonstrate the methodology and examine its finite sample performance in HRF estimation, which confirms that MASM significantly outperforms the existing methods including the smooth finite impulse
