It is well known that a vector variational inequality can be a very efficient model for use in studying vector optimization problems. By using the Ky Fan fixed point theorem and the scalarization method we will prove some existence theorems for strong solutions for generalized vector variational inequalities where discontinuous and star-pseudomonotone operators are involved. Our results can be applied to the study of the existence of solutions of vector optimal problems. Some examples are given and analyzed.

Degree theory has been developed as a tool for checking the solution existence of nonlinear equations. In his classic paper published in 1983, Browder developed a degree theory for mappings of monotone type f+ T, where f is a mapping of class (S)+ from a bounded open set in a reflexive Banach space X into its dual X, and T is a maximal monotone mapping from X into X. This breakthrough paved the way for many applications of degree theoretic techniques to several large classes of nonlinear partial differential equations. In this paper we continue to develop the results of Browder on the degree theory for mappings of monotone type f+ T. By enlarging the class of maximal monotone mappings and pseudo-monotone homotopies we obtain some new results of the degree theory for such mappings.

Recently, the invertibility of linear combinations of two idempotents has been studied by several authors. Let P and Q be idempotents in a Banach algebra. It was shown that the invertibility of P+ Q is equivalent to that of aP+ bQ for nonzero a, b with a+ b= 0. In this note, we obtain a similar result for square zero operators and those operators satisfying x2= dx for some scalar d. More generally, we show that if P, Q satisfy a quadratic polynomial (x c)(x d) then the linear combination aP+ bQ c (a+ b) being invertible or Fredholm (and the index) is independent of the choice of the nonzero scalars a, b. However, this is not the case when P and Q are involutions, unitaries, partial isometries, k-potents (k 3) and other nilpotents, as counterexamples are provided.

A not necessarily continuous, linear or multiplicative function from an algebra A into itself is called a 2-local automorphism if agrees with an automorphism of A at each pair of points in A. In this paper, we study when a 2-local automorphism of a C-algebra, or a standard operator algebra on a locally convex space, is an automorphism.

Let E be a real Banach space with a uniformly Gteaux differentiable norm and which possesses uniform normal structure, K a nonempty bounded closed convex subset of E,{T i} i= 1 N a finite family of asymptotically nonexpansive self-mappings on K with common sequence {k n} n= 1[1,),{t n},{s n} be two sequences in (0, 1) such that s n+ t n= 1 (n 1) and f be a contraction on K. We study the following generalized quasivariational inequality problem: given a closed convex set <i>X</i> in a normed space <i>E</i> with the dual <i>E</i> ^*, a multifunction \Phi :Xightarrow 2^{E^{*}} and a multifunction :<i>X</i>2^<i>X</i>, find a point \Phi :Xightarrow 2^{E^{*}} such that \Phi :Xightarrow 2^{E^{*}} , \Phi :Xightarrow 2^{E^{*}} . We prove some existence theorems in which may be discontinuous, <i>X</i> may be unbounded, and is not assumed to be Hausdorff lower semicontinuous.

Let <i>X</i> be a locally compact Hausdorff space and <i>C</i> ₀(<i>X</i>) the Banach space of continuous functions on <i>X</i> vanishing at infinity. In this paper, we shall study unbounded disjointness preserving linear functionals on <i>C</i> ₀(<i>X</i>). They arise from prime ideals of <i>C</i> ₀(<i>X</i>), and we translate it into the cozero set ideal setting. In particular, every unbounded disjointness preserving linear functional of <i>c</i> ₀ can be constructed explicitly through an ultrafilter on complementary to a cozero set ideal. This ultrafilter method can be extended to produce many, but in general not all, such functionals on <i>C</i> ₀(<i>X</i>) for arbitrary <i>X</i>. We also make some remarks where <i>C</i> ₀(<i>X</i>) is replaced by a non-commutative C*-algebra.

This paper is devoted to the study of orthogonality and disjointness preserving linear maps between Fourier and FourierStieltjes algebras of locally compact groups. We show that a linear bijection : A (G 1) A (G 2)(resp. : B (G 1) B (G 2)) between two Fourier algebras (resp. FourierStieltjes algebras) of locally compact groups will induce a topological group isomorphism between G 1 and G 2, provided that preserves both disjointness and some kind of orthogonality. This improves earlier results of JJ Font and MS Monfared, where amenability of the groups or continuity of the linear maps are assumed. We also study the structure of bounded and unbounded disjointness preserving linear functionals of Fourier algebras. In the development, general results about disjointness and orthogonality preserving linear maps between C-algebras, W-algebras and their preduals are obtained.

In this paper, a degree theory for finite dimensional generalized variational inequalities is built and employed to prove some results on solution existence and solution stability.
