In this paper we study self-similar solutions to the singular and degenerate diffusion equation u t=(|(p (u)) x| -2 (p (u)) x) x,-< x<+, t> 0, where 1< < 2. The existence and uniqueness for the solutions are established. In addition, the asymptotic behavior is investigated.

A semi-explicit formula of solution to the boundary layer system for thermal layer derived from the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with the non-slip boundary condition when the viscosity coefficients vanish is given, in particular in three space dimension. In contrast to the inviscid Prandtl system studied by [7] in two space dimension, the main difficulty comes from the coupling of the velocity field and the temperature field through a degenerate parabolic equation. The convergence of these boundary layer equations to the inviscid Prandtl system is justified when the initial temperature goes to a constant. Moreover, the time asymptotic stability of the linearized system around a shear flow is given, and in particular, it shows that in three space dimension, the asymptotic stability depends on whether the direction of tangential velocity field of the shear flow is invariant in the normal direction respective to the boundary.

We characterize probability measure with finite moment of any order in terms of the symmetric difference operators of their Fourier transforms. By using our new characterization, we prove the continuity f (t, v)\in C ((0,\infty), L^ 1_ {2k-2+ }) , where f (t, v)\in C ((0,\infty), L^ 1_ {2k-2+ }) stands for the density of unique measure-valued solution f (t, v)\in C ((0,\infty), L^ 1_ {2k-2+ }) of the Cauchy problem for the homogeneous non-cutoff Boltzmann equation, with Maxwellian molecules, corresponding to a probability measure initial datum f (t, v)\in C ((0,\infty), L^ 1_ {2k-2+ }) satisfying\[\int| v|^{2k-2+ } dF_0 (v)<\infty, 0\leq < 2, k= 2, 3, 4,\cdots\] provided that f (t, v)\in C ((0,\infty), L^ 1_ {2k-2+ }) is not a single Dirac mass.

The approach based on the construction of some nonlinear functionals was proved to be robust in the study of the well-posedness theories of hyperbolic conservation laws, especially in one space dimensional case. In particular, a generalized entropy functional was constructed in [T.-P. Liu, T. Yang, A new entropy functional for scalar conservation laws, Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 52 (1999) 14271442] for the L 1 stability of weak solutions. However, this generalized functional is so far only defined for scalar equations with convex flux function. In this paper, we introduce a new nonlinear functional which is motivated by the new Glimm functional introduced in [J.-L. Hua, Z.-H. Jiang, T. Yang, A new Glimm functional and convergence rate of Glimm scheme for general systems of hyperbolic conservation laws, preprint] for general scalar conservation laws. Although the decay in time estimates of the semi-group generated by the linearized Boltzmann operator without forcing have been well established, there is no corresponding result for the case with general external force. This paper is mainly concerned with the optimal decay estimates on the solution operator in some weighted Sobolev spaces for the linearized Boltzmann equation with a time dependent external force. No time decay assumption is made on the force. The proof is based on both the energy method through the macro-micro decomposition and the L p-L q estimates from the spectral analysis. The decay estimates thus obtained are applied to the study on the global existence of the Cauchy problem to the nonlinear Boltzmann equation with time dependent external force and source. As a typical example of hyperbolic conservation laws, the system of Euler equations representing the conservation of mass, momentum and energy has three basic wave patterns. They are two nonlinear waves called shock and rarefaction wave, and one linearly degenerate wave called contact discontinuity. These basic wave patterns have their counterparts both in other physical models for gas motions in equilibrium involving viscosity and heat conductivity, and gas motion in non-equilibrium. The stability of these basic wave patterns in the system of Navier-Stokes equations and the Boltzmann equation has been an active research topic. Even though the stability of the two nonlinear wave patterns has been extensively studied, the stability of the linearly degenerate contact wave was not solved until recently. In this paper, we will briefly present our recent results in [32] on the stability of the contact wave patterns for both the Navier-Stokes equations and the Boltzmann equation.
