Large-time behavior of solutions to the inflow problem of full compressible NavierStokes equations is investigated on the half line \mathbf{R}_+=(0,+\infty). The wave structure, which contains four wavesthe transonic (or degenerate) boundary layer solution, the 1-rarefaction wave, the viscous 2-contact wave, and the 3-rarefaction wave to the inflow problemis described, and the asymptotic stability of the superposition of the above four wave patterns to the inflow problem of full compressible NavierStokes equations is proven under some smallness conditions. The proof is given by the elementary energy analysis based on the underlying wave structure. The main points in the proof are the treatments of the degeneracies in the transonic boundary layer solution and the wave interactions in the superposition wave.

G-equations are popular front propagation models in combustion literature and describe the front motion law of normal velocity equal to a constant plus the normal projection of fluid velocity. G-equations are Hamilton-Jacobi equations with convex but non-coercive Hamiltonians. We prove homogenization of the inviscid G-equation for space periodic incompressible flows. This extends a two space dimensional result in" Periodic homogenization of G-equations and viscosity effects," Nonlinearity, to appear. We construct approximate correctors to bypass the lack of compactness due to the non-coercive Hamiltonian. The existence of approximate correctors rely on a local reachability property of the controlled flow trajectory as well as incompressibility of the flow. In this paper, we will introduce a precise classification of characteristic functions in the Fourier space according to the moment constraint in the physical space of any order. Based on this, we construct measure-valued solutions to the homogeneous Boltzmann equation with the exact moment condition as the initial data.

We study the stability and oscillation of traveling fronts in a three-component, advection-reaction biodegradation model. The three components are pollutant, nutrient, and bacteria concentrations. Under an explicit condition on the biomass growth and decay coefficients, we derive reduced, two-component, semilinear hyperbolic models through a relaxation procedure, during which biomass is slaved to pollutant and nutrient concentration variables. The reduced two-component models resemble the Broadwell model of the discrete velocity gas. The traveling fronts of the reduced system are explicit and are expressed in terms of hyperbolic tangent function in the nutrient-deficient regime. We perform energy estimates to prove the asymptotic stability of these fronts under explicit conditions on the coefficients in the system. In this paper we prove an existence theorem of global smooth solutions for the Cauchy problem of a class of quasilinear hyperbolic systems with nonlinear dissipative terms under the assumption that only the <i>C</i>⁰-norm of the initial data is sufficiently small, while the <i>C</i>¹-norm of the initial data can be large. The analysis is based on <i>a priori</i> estimates, which are obtained by a generalised Lax transformation.

We consider the self-adjoint Smilansky Hamiltonian H in L2 R2) associated with the formal differential expression -x2-1/2(y2+y2)-2y(x) in the sub-critical regime, (0, 1). We demonstrate the existence of resonances for H on a countable subfamily of sheets of the underlying Riemann surface whose distance from the physical sheet is finite. On such sheets, we find resonance free regions and characterize resonances for small &gt; 0. In addition, we refine the previously known results on the bound states of H in the weak coupling regime (0+). In the proofs we use Birman-Schwinger principle for H, elements of spectral theory for Jacobi matrices, and the analytic implicit function theorem.

We prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the gravitational hydrostatic equilibrium for the general equation of state of pressure-density relation in the framework of vacuum free boundary problem of spherically symmetric compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations in three dimensions.The results apply to white dwarfs and polytropes with γ≥2, for which even the linearized asymptotic stability results are not available in literature, to the best of the authors' knowledge. Detailed decay rates of perturbations are given.

We consider the zero heat conductivity limit to a contact discontinuity for the mono-dimensional full compressible Navier--Stokes--Fourier system. The method is based on the relative entropy method and does not assume any smallness conditions on the discontinuity nor on the bounded variation norm of the initial data. It is proved that for any viscosity , the solution of the compressible Navier--Stokes--Fourier system (with well-prepared initial value) converges, when the heat conductivity tends to zero, to the contact discontinuity solution to the corresponding Euler system. We obtain the decay rate . It implies that the heat conductivity dominates the dissipation in the regime of the limit to a contact discontinuity. This is the first result, based on the relative entropy, of an asymptotic limit to a discontinuous solution for a system.

We study the oscillatory behavior that arises in solutions of a dispersive numerical scheme for the Hopf equation whenever the classical solution of the equation develops a singularity. Modulation equations are derived that describe period-two oscillations so long as the solution of those equations takes values for which the equations are hyperbolic. However, those equations have an elliptic region that may be entered by its solutions in a finite time, after which the corresponding period-two oscillations are seen to break down. This kind of phenomenon has not been observed for integrable schemes. The generation and propagation of period-two oscillations are asymptotically analyzed and a matching formula is found for the transition between oscillatory and nonoscillatory regions. Modulation equations are also presented for period-three oscillations. Numerical experiments are carried out that illustrate our analysis.

In this paper, we study the asymptotic stability of rarefaction waves for the compressible isentropic NavierStokes equations with density-dependent viscosity. First, a weak solution around a rarefaction wave to the Cauchy problem is constructed by approximating the system and regularizing the initial values which may contain vacuum states. Then some global in time estimates on the weak solution are obtained. Based on these uniform estimates, the vacuum states are shown to vanish in finite time and the weak solution we constructed becomes a unique strong one. Consequently, the stability of the rarefaction wave is proved in a weak sense. The theory holds for large-amplitudes rarefaction waves and arbitrary initial perturbations.

The existence of a discrete travelling wave is proved for the relaxing scheme. The main idea is to change the original scheme such that the resulting scheme is monotonic to which Jennings' result can be applied. The equivalence of the resulting scheme and the original one is shown when = 1 q. The u-component of the discrete travelling wave thus obtained is a discrete shock for a monotone conservative difference scheme, which approximates the corresponding conservation law.

In this paper, self-similarity is illustrated and compared in deterministic and stochastic dissipative systems. Examples are (1) deterministic self-similarity in reaction-diffusion system and Navier-Stokes equations, where solutions eventually decay to zero due to balance of diffusion (viscosity) and nonlinearity;(2) statistical self-similarity in randomly advected passive scalar model of Kraichnan where solutions undergo turbulent decay due to roughness of advection;(3) selfsimilarity in blowup of solutions of fourth order nonlinear parabolic equations of the Cahn-Hillard type. Problems for future research are mentioned, especially those where self-similarity is conjectured based on numerical evidence or physical grounds but mathematically open.

This work is concerned with our recently developed formalism of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. This formalism extends the classical irreversible thermodynamics which leads to classical thermodynamics and can not describe physical phenomena with long relaxations. With the extended theory, we obtain a generalized hydrodynamic system which can be used to describe the non-Newtonian fluids, heat transfer beyond Fourier's law and fluid flow in very short temporal and spatial scales. We study the mathematical structure of the generalized hydrodynamic system and show that it possesses a nice conservation-dissipation structure and therefore is symmetrizable hyperbolic. Moreover, we rigorously justify that this generalized hydrodynamic system tends to the classical hydrodynamics when the relaxation times approach to zero. This shows that the classical hydrodynamics can be derived as an approximation of our generalized one.

We give a generalized version of uncertainty principle, and apply it to the study of regularization properties of solutions to kinetic equations. Mathematical analysis on electromagnetic waves in photonic graphene, a photonic topological material which has a honeycomb structure, is one of the most important current research topics. By modulating the honeycomb structure, numerous topological phenomena have been observed recently. The electromagnetic waves in such a media are generally described by the 2-dimensional wave equation. It has been shown that the corresponding elliptic operator with a honeycomb material weight has Dirac points in its dispersion surfaces. In this paper, we study the time evolution of the wave packets spectrally concentrated at such Dirac points in a modulated honeycomb material weight. We prove that such wave packet dynamics is governed by the Dirac equation with a varying mass in a large but finite time. Our analysis provides mathematical insights to those topological phenomena in photonic graphene.

A reformulation of the planetary geostrophic equations (PGEs) with the inviscid balance equation is proposed and the existence of global weak solutions is established, provided that the mechanical force satisfies an integral constraint. There is only one prognostic equation for the temperature field, and the velocity field is statically determined by the planetary geostrophic balance combined with the incompressibility condition. Furthermore, the velocity profile can be accurately represented as a function of the temperature gradient. In particular, the vertical velocity depends only on the first-order derivative of the temperature. As a result, the bound for the L ∞ (0, t 1 ; L 2 ) ∩ L 2 (0, t 1 ; H 1 ) norm of the temperature field is sufficient to show the existence of the weak solution.

As a continuation of our series works on the Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff assumption, in this part, the global existence of solution to the Cauchy problem in the whole space is proved in some suitable weighted Sobolev spaces for hard potential when the solution is a small perturbation of a global equilibrium.

Let G=(V,E) be a locally finite connected weighted graph, and Δ be the usual graph Laplacian. In this article, we study blow-up problems for the nonlinear parabolic equation u_t = Δu + f(u) on G. The blow-up phenomenons for u_t = Δu + f(u) are discussed in terms of two cases: (i) an initial condition is given; (ii) a Dirichlet boundary condition is given. We prove that if f satisfies appropriate conditions, then the corresponding solutions will blow up in a finite time.

In this article, we propose a novel approach to construct macroscopic balance equations and constitutive equations describing various irreversible phenomena. It is based on the general principles of non-equilibrium thermodynamics and consists of four basic steps: picking suitable state variables, choosing a strictly concave entropy function, properly separating entropy fuxes and production rates, and determining a dissipation matrix. Our approach takes advantage of both extended irreversible thermodynamics and GENERIC formalisms and shows a direct correspondence with Levermore’s moment-closure hierarchies for the Boltzmann equation. As a direct application, a new ten-moment model beyond the classical hierarchies is constructed and is shown to recover the Euler equations in the equilibrium state. These interesting results may put various macroscopic modeling approaches, starting from the general principles of non-equilibrium thermodynamics, on a solid microscopic foundation based on the Boltzmann equation.

We study the hypocoercivity property for some kinetic equations in the whole space and obtain the optimal convergence rates of solutions to the equilibrium state in some function spaces. The analysis relies on the basic energy method and the compensating function introduced by Kawashima to the classical Boltzmann equation and developed by Glassey and Strauss in the relativistic setting. It is also motivated by the recent work (Duan et al., 2008 [8]) on the Boltzmann equation by combining the spectrum analysis and energy method. The advantage of the method introduced in this paper is that it can be applied to some complicated system whose detailed spectrum is not known. In fact, only some estimates through the Fourier transform on the conservative transport operator and the dissipation of the linearized operator on the subspace orthogonal to the collision invariants are needed.

This paper is concerned with the time-asymptotic behavior toward strong rarefaction waves of solutions to one-dimensional compressible Navier--Stokes equations. Assume that the corresponding Riemann problem to the compressible Euler equations can be solved by rarefaction waves (<i>V^R</i>, <i>U^R</i>, <i>S^R</i>)(<i>t</i>,<i>x</i>). If the initial data (<i>v</i>₀ , <i>u</i>₀ ,<i>s</i>₀ )(<i>x</i>) to the nonisentropic compressible Navier--Stokes equations is a small perturbation of an approximate rarefaction wave constructed as in [S. Kawashima, A. Matsumura, and K. Nishihara, <i>Proc. Japan Acad. Ser. A</i>, 62 (1986), pp. 249--252], then we show that, for the general gas, the Cauchy problem admits a unique global smooth solution (<i>v</i>, <i>u</i>, <i>s</i>)(<i>t</i>,<i>x</i>) which tends to (<i>V^R</i>, <i>U^R</i>, <i>S^R</i>)(<i>t</i>,<i>x</i>) as <i>t</i> tends to infinity.
