This investigation studies nonemptiness problems of plane edge coloring with three colors. In the edge coloring (or Wang tiles) of a plane, unit squares with colored edges that have one of p colors are arranged side by side such that the touching edges of the adjacent tiles have the same colors. Given a basic set B of Wang tiles, the nonemptiness problem is to determine whether or not Σ(B) 6= ∅, where Σ(B) is the set of all global patterns on Z2 that can be constructed from the Wang tiles in B. Wang’s conjecture is that for any B of Wang tiles, Σ(B) 6= ∅ if and only if P(B) 6= ∅, where P(B) is the set of all periodic patterns on Z2 that can be generated by the tiles in B. When p ≥ 5, Wang’s conjecture is known to be wrong. When p = 2, theconjecture is true. This study proves that when p = 3, the conjecture is also true. If P(B) 6= ∅, then B has a subset B′ of minimal cycle generators such that P(B′) 6= ∅ and P(B′′) = ∅ for B′′ $ B′. This study demonstrates that the set C(3) of all minimal cycle generators contains 787, 605 members that can be classified into 2, 906 equivalence classes. N(3) is the set of all maximal non-cycle generators : if B ∈ N(3), then P(B) = ∅ and P(B ˜) 6= ∅ for B ˜ % B. Wang’s conjecture is shown to be true by proving that B ∈ N(3) implies Σ(B) = ∅.

We study the periodic homogenization of first order front propagations. Based on PDE methods, we provide a simple proof that, for n ≥ 3, the class of centrally symmetric polytopes with rational coordinates and nonempty interior is admissible as effective fronts, which was also established by I. Babenko and F. Balacheff [Sur la forme de la boule unit\'e de la norme stable unidimensionnelle, Manuscripta Math. 119 (2006) 347--358] and M. Jotz [Hedlund metrics and the stable norm, Diff. Geometry Appl. 27 (2009) 543--550] in the form of stable norms as an extension of G. A. Hedlund's classical result [Geodesics on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold with periodic coefficients, Ann. Math. 33 (1932) 719--739]. Besides, we obtain the optimal convergence rate of the homogenization problem for this class.

To study arithmetic structures of natural numbers, we introduce a notion of entropy of arithmetic functions, called anqie entropy. This entropy possesses some crucial properties common to both Shannon's and Kolmogorov's entropies. We show that all arithmetic functions with zero anqie entropy form a C*-algebra. Its maximal ideal space defines our arithmetic compactification of natural numbers, which is totally disconnected but not extremely disconnected. We also compute the $K$-groups of the space of all continuous functions on the arithmetic compactification. As an application, we show that any topological dynamical system with topological entropy $\lambda$, can be approximated by symbolic dynamical systems with entropy less than or equal to $\lambda$.

Let $K$ be a self-similar set satisfying the open set condition. Following Kaimanovich’s elegant idea, it has been proved that on the symbolic space $X$ of $K$ a natural augmented tree structure $E$ exists; it is hyperbolic, and the hyperbolic boundary $\partial_H X$ with the Gromov metric is H\"older equivalent to $K$. In this paper we consider certain reversible random walks with return ratio $0 < \lambda < 1$ on $(X,E)$. We show that the Martin boundary ${\mathcal M}$ can be identified with $\partial_H X$ and $K$. With this setup and a device of Silverstein, we obtain precise estimates of the Martin kernel and the Na\"im kernel in terms of the Gromov product. Moreover, the Naïm kernel turns out to be a jump kernel satisfying the estimate $\Theta (\xi,\eta) \asymp |\xi-\eta|^{-(\alpha+\beta)}$, where $\alpha$ is the Hausdorff dimension of $K$ and $\beta$ depends on $\lambda$. For suitable $\beta$, the kernel defines a regular non-local Dirichlet form on $K$. This extends the results of Kigami concerning random walks on certain trees with Cantor-type sets as boundaries.

This paper studies the dynamics of a network-based SIS epidemic model with nonmonotone incidence rate. This type of nonlinear incidence can be used to describe the psychological effect of certain diseases spread in a contact network at high infective levels. We first find a threshold value for the transmission rate. This value completely determines the dynamics of the model and interestingly, the threshold is not dependent on the functional form of the nonlinear incidence rate. Furthermore, if the transmission rate is less than or equal to the threshold value, the disease will die out. Otherwise, it will be permanent. Numerical experiments are given to illustrate the theoretical results. We also consider the effect of the nonlinear incidence on the epidemic dynamics.

We study mixing properties of commutative groups of automorphisms acting on compact nilmanifolds. Assuming that every non-trivial element acts ergodically, we prove that such actions are mixing of all orders. We further show exponential 2-mixing and 3-mixing. As an application we prove smooth cocycle rigidity for higher-rank abelian groups of nilmanifold automorphisms.

In this paper, we prove that there exist noncollision singularites in a planar four-body problem, thus settles the Painleve conjecture.

We study the well-posedness of a unified system of coupled forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FB-SDEs) with Levy jumps and double completely-S skew reflections. Owing to the reflections, the solution to an embedded Skorohod problem may be not unique, i.e., bifurcations may occur at reflection boundaries, the well-known contraction mapping approach can not be extended directly to solve our problem. Thus, we develop a weak convergence method to prove the well-posedness of an adapted 6-tuple weak solution in the sense of distribution to the unified system. The proof heavily depends on newly established Malliavin calculus for vector-valued Levy processes together with a generalized linear growth and Lipschitz condition that guarantees the well-posedness of the unified system even under a random environment. Nevertheless, if a more strict boundary condition is imposed, i.e., the spectral radii in certain sense for the reflections are strictly less than the unity, a unique adapted 6-tuple strong solution in the sense of sample pathwise is concerned. In addition, as applications and economical studies of our unified system, we also develop new techniques including deriving a generalized mutual information formula for signal processing over possible non-Gaussian channels with multi-input multi-output (MIMO) antennas and dynamics driven by Levy processes.

In this paper we discuss properties of the KdV equation under periodic boundary conditions, especially those which are important to study perturbations of the equation. Next we review what is known now about long-time behaviour of solutions for perturbed KdV equations.

By introducing some special bi-orthogonal polynomials, we derive the so-called discrete hungry quotient-difference (dhQD) algorithm and a system related to the QD-type discrete hungry LotkaVolterra (QD-type dhLV) system, together with their Lax pairs. These two known equations can be regarded as extensions of the QD algorithm. When this idea is applied to a higher analogue of the discrete-time Toda (HADT) equation and the quotientquotient-difference (QQD) scheme proposed by Spicer, Nijhoff and van der Kamp, two extended systems are constructed. We call these systems the hungry forms of the higher analogue discrete-time Toda (hHADT) equation and the quotient-quotient-difference (hQQD) scheme, respectively. In addition, the corresponding Lax pairs are provided.

In this paper, we study intermittent behaviors of coupled piecewise-expanding map lattices with two nodes and a weak coupling. We show that the successive phase transition between ordered and disordered phases occurs for almost every orbit. That is, we prove $\liminf_{n\rightarrow \infty}| x_1(n)-x_2(n)|=0$ and $\limsup_{n\rightarrow \infty}| x_1(n)-x_2(n)|\ge c_0>0$, where $x_1(n), x_2(n)$ correspond to the coordinates of two nodes at the iterative step $n$. We also prove the same conclusion for weakly coupled tent-map lattices with any multi-nodes.

We give a method for constructing transcendental entire functions with good control of both the singular values of$f$and the geometry of$f$. Among other applications, we construct a function$f$with bounded singular set, whose Fatou set contains a wandering domain.

We study generalized Hopf–Cole transformations motivated by the Schrödinger bridge problem, which can be seen as a boundary value Hamiltonian system on the Wasserstein space. We prove that generalized Hopf–Cole transformations are symplectic submersions in the Wasserstein symplectic geometry. Many examples, including a Hopf–Cole transformation for the shallow water equations, are given. Based on this transformation, energy splitting inequalities are provided.

We study groups of automorphisms and birational transformations of quasi-projective varieties. Two methods are combined; the first one is based on p-adic analysis, the second makes use of isoperimetric inequalities and Lang–Weil estimates. For instance, we show that, if SLn(Z) acts faithfully on a complex quasi-projective variety X by birational transformations, then dim(X)⩾n−1 and X is rational if dim(X)=n−1.

Skew-orthogonal polynomials (SOPs) arise in the study of the <i>n</i>-point distribution function for orthogonal and symplectic random matrix ensembles. Motivated by the average of characteristic polynomials of the Bures random matrix ensemble studied in Forrester and Kieburg (Commun Math Phys 342(1):151187, 2016), we propose the concept of <i>partial-skew-orthogonal polynomials</i> (PSOPs) as a modification of the SOPs, and then the PSOPs with a variety of special skew-symmetric kernels and weight functions are addressed. By considering appropriate deformations of the weight functions, we derive nine integrable lattices in different dimensions. As a consequence, the tau-functions for these systems are shown to be expressed in terms of Pfaffians and the wave vectors PSOPs. For a random walk on a finitely generated group G we obtain a generalization of a classical inequality of Ancona. We deduce as a corollary that the identity map on G extends to a continuous equivariant surjection from the Martin boundary to the Floyd boundary, with preimages of conical points being singletons. This provides new results for Martin compactifications of relatively hyperbolic groups.

Many discrete integrable systems exhibit the Laurent phenomenon. In this paper, we investigate three integrable systems: the Somos-4 recurrence, the Somos-5 recurrence, and a system related to so-called A_1 A_1-system, whose general solutions are derived in terms of Hankel determinant. As a result, we directly confirm that they satisfy the Laurent property. Additionally, it is shown that the Somos-5 recurrence can be viewed as a specified Backlund transformation of the Somos-4 recurrence. Related topics about Somos polynomials are also studied.

The main goal of this paper is to understand finer properties of the effective burning velocity from a combustion model introduced by Majda and Souganidis. Motivated by results of Bangert and applications in turbulent combus- tion, we show that when the dimension is two and the flow of the ambient fluid is either weak or very strong, the level set of the effective burning velocity has flat pieces. Due to the lack of an applicable Hopf-type rigidity result, we need to identify the exact location of at least one flat piece. Implications on the effective flame front and other related inverse type problems are also discussed.

This investigation completely classifies the spatial chaos problem in plane edge coloring (Wang tiles) with two symbols. For a set of Wang tiles B, spatial chaos occurs when the spatial entropy h(B) is positive. B is called a minimal cycle generator if P(B) 6= ∅ and P(B′) = ∅ whenever B′ $ B, where P(B) is the set of all periodic patterns on Z2 generated by B. Given a set of Wang tiles B, write B = C1 ∪ C2 ∪ · · · ∪ Ck ∪ N, where Cj, 1 ≤ j ≤ k, are minimal cycle generators and B contains no minimal cycle generator except those contained in C1 ∪ C2 ∪ · · · ∪ Ck. Then, the positivity of spatial entropy h(B) is completely determined by C1 ∪ C2 ∪ · · · ∪ Ck. Furthermore, there are 39 equivalent classes of marginal positive-entropy (MPE) sets of Wang tiles and 18 equivalent classes of saturated zero-entropy (SZE) sets of Wang tiles. For a set of Wang tiles B, h(B) is positive if and only if B contains an MPE set, and h(B) is zero if and only if B is a subset of an SZE set.

We propose a new method for constructing partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on closed manifolds. As a demonstration of the method we show that there are simply connected closed manifolds that support partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. Laying aside many surgery constructions of 3-dimensional Anosov flows, these are the first new examples of manifolds which admit partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms in the past forty years.

We consider a large class of 2D area-preserving diffeomorphisms that are not uniformly hyperbolic but have strong hyperbolicity properties on large regions of their phase spaces. A prime example is the standard map. Lower bounds for Lyapunov exponents of such systems are very hard to estimate, due to the potential switching of “stable” and “unstable” directions. This paper shows that with the addition of (very) small random perturbations, one obtains with relative ease Lyapunov exponents reflecting the geometry of the deterministic maps.

We investigate Sarnak's M\"obius Disjointness Conjecture through asymptotically periodic functions. It is shown that Sarnak's conjecture for rigid dynamical systems is equivalent to the disjointness of M\"obius from asymptotically periodic functions. We give sufficient conditions and a partial answer to the later one. As an application, we show that Sarnak's conjecture holds for a class of rigid dynamical systems, which improves an earlier result of Kanigowski-Lema{\'{n}}czyk-Radziwi{\l}{\l}.
