Given an involution on a rational homology 3-sphere Y with quotient the 3-sphere, we prove a formula for the Lefschetz number of the map induced by this involution in the reduced monopole Floer homology. This formula is motivated by a variant of Witten's conjecture relating the Donaldson and Seiberg--Witten invariants of 4-manifolds. A key ingredient is a skein-theoretic argument, making use of an exact triangle in monopole Floer homology, that computes the Lefschetz number in terms of the Murasugi signature of the branch set and the sum of Frøyshov invariants associated to spin structures on Y. We discuss various applications of our formula in gauge theory, knot theory, contact geometry, and 4-dimensional topology.

Let G={h_t|t∈ℝ} be a continuous flow on a connected n-manifold M. The flow G is said to be strongly reversible by an involution τ if h_{−t}=τh_tτ for all t∈ℝ, and it is said to be periodic if h_s= identity for some s∈ℝ^∗. A closed subset K of M is called a global section for G if every orbit G(x) intersects K in exactly one point. In this paper, we study how the two properties “strongly reversible” and “has a global section” are related. In particular, we show that if G is periodic and strongly reversible by a reflection, then G has a global section.

We study the Seiberg-Witten invariant λSW(X) of smooth spin 4-manifolds X with integral homology of S1×S3 defined by Mrowka, Ruberman, and Saveliev as a signed count of irreducible monopoles amended by an index-theoretic correction term. We prove a splitting formula for this invariant in terms of the Frøyshov invariant h(X) and a certain Lefschetz number in the reduced monopole Floer homology of Kronheimer and Mrowka. We apply this formula to obstruct existence of metrics of positive scalar curvature on certain 4-manifolds, and to exhibit new classes of integral homology 3-spheres of Rohlin invariant one which have infinite order in the homology cobordism group.

Dunfield-Garoufalidis and Boyer-Zhang proved that the A-polynomial of a nontrivial knot in S3 is nontrivial. In this paper, we use holonomy perturbations to prove the non-triviality of the A-polynomial for a nontrivial, null-homotopic knot in an irreducible 3-manifold. Also, we give a strong constraint on the A-polynomial of a knot in the 3-sphere.

For fixed subgroups Fix(ϕ) of automorphisms ϕ on hyperbolic 3-manifold groups π1(M), we observed that rk(Fix(ϕ))<2rk(π1(M)) and the constant 2 in the inequality is sharp; we also classify all possible groups Fix(ϕ).

We use the construction of unfolded Seiberg-Witten Floer spectra of general 3-manifolds defined in our previous paper to extend the notion of relative Bauer-Furuta invariants to general 4-manifolds with boundary. One of the main purposes of this paper is to give a detailed proof of the gluing theorem for the relative invariants.

Suppose that <i></i>₀ is an unknotted simple closed curve contained in the 3-sphere which happens to be invariant under a subgroup <i>G</i> of the Mbius group of <i>S³</i> = the group (generated by inversions in 2-spheres). It is shown that there is an equivariant isotopy <i></i>_<i>t</i>, 0 <i>t</i> 1, from <i></i>₀ to a round circle <i></i>₁.

Registration, which aims to find an optimal 1-1 correspondence between shapes, is an important process in different research areas. Conformal mappings have been widely used to obtain a diffeomorphism between shapes that minimizes angular distortion. Conformal registrations are beneficial since it preserves the local geometry well. However, when landmark constraints are enforced, conformal mappings generally do not exist. This motivates us to look for a unique landmark matching quasi-conformal registration, which minimizes the conformality distortion. Under suitable condition on the landmark constraints, a unique diffeomporphism, called the Teichmller extremal mapping between two surfaces can be obtained, which minimizes the maximal conformality distortion. In this paper, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm, called the Quasi-conformal (QC) iterations, to compute the Teichmller mapping. The basic idea is to represent the set of diffeomorphisms using Beltrami coefficients (BCs), and look for an optimal BC associated to the desired Teichmller mapping. The associated diffeomorphism can be efficiently reconstructed from the optimal BC using the Linear Beltrami Solver (LBS). Using BCs to represent diffeomorphisms guarantees the diffeomorphic property of the registration. Using our proposed method, the Teichmller mapping can be accurately and efficiently computed within 10 seconds. The obtained registration is guaranteed to be bijective. Given a compact orientable surface with finitely many punctures \Sigma , let $\Cal S (\Sigma) $ be the set of isotopy classes of essential unoriented simple closed curves in \Sigma . We determine a complete set of relations for a function from $\Cal S (\Sigma) $ to $\bold R $ to be the geodesic length function of a hyperbolic metric with geodesic boundary and cusp ends on \Sigma . As a conse quence, the Teichmller space of hyperbolic metrics with geodesic boundary and cusp ends on \Sigma is reconstructed from an intrinsic $(\bold QP^ 1, PSL (2,\bold Z)) $ structure on $\Cal S (\Sigma) $.

Given a 3-holed sphere decomposition of an orientable closed surface, it is shown that each orientation preserving homeomorphism of the surface is isotopic to a composition AB where A is a product of positive Dehn twists and B is a product of negative Dehn twists on the decomposition curves.

We study the spherical cone metrics on surfaces from the point of view of inner angles. A rigidity result is obtained. The existence of spherical cone metric of Delaunay type is also established.

Given a loop on a surface, its homotopy class can be specified as a word consisting of letters representing the homotopy group generators. One of the interesting problems is how to compute the shortest word for a given loop. This is an NP-hard problem in general. However, for a closed surface that allows a hyperbolic metric and is equipped with a canonical set of fundamental group generators, the shortest word problem can be reduced to finding the shortest loop that is homotopic to the given loop, which can be solved efficiently. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm to compute the shortest words for loops given on triangulated surface meshes. The design of this algorithm is inspired and guided by the work of Dehn and BirmanSeries. The goal of this chapter is an attempt to relate some ideas of Grothendieck in his Esquisse dun programme [10] and some of the recent results on 2-dimensional topology and geometry. Especially, we shall discuss Teichmller theory, the mapping class groups, the SL (2, C) representation variety of surface groups, and Thurstons theory of measured laminations.

We discuss some applications of an intrinsic multipication in the space of simple loops in a surface.

We give a characterization of the action of the mapping class group on Thurston's space of measured laminations.

We consider a volume maximization program to construct hyperbolic structures on triangulated 3-manifolds, for which previous progress has lead to consider angle assignments which do not correspond to a hyperbolic metric on each simplex. We show that critical points of the generalized volume are associated to geometric structures modeled on the extended hyperbolic space-the natural extension of hyperbolic space by the de Sitter space-except for the degenerate case where all simplices are Euclidean in a generalized sense.

We show that the order of the cardinality of maximal complete $1$-systems of loops on non-orientable surfaces is $\sim |\chi|^{2}$. In particular, we determine the exact cardinality of maximal complete $1$-systems of loops on punctured projective planes. To prove these results, we show that the cardinality of maximal systems of arcs pairwise-intersecting at most once on a non-orientable surface is $2|\chi|(|\chi|+1)$.
