The action of the mapping class group of the thrice-punctured projective plane on its GL(2,C) character variety produces an algorithm for generating the simple length spectra of quasi-Fuchsian thrice-punctured projective planes. We apply this algorithm to quasi-Fuchsian representations of the corresponding fundamental group to prove: a sharp upper-bound for the length its shortest geodesic, a McShane identity and the surprising result of non-polynomial growth for the number of simple closed geodesic lengths.

Fundamental group is one of the most important topological invariants for general manifolds, which can be directly used as manifolds classification. In this work, we provide a series of practical and efficient algorithms to compute fundamental groups for general 3-manifolds based on CW cell decomposition. The input is a tetrahedral mesh, while the output is symbolic representation of its first fundamental group. We further simplify the fundamental group representation using computational algebraic method. We present the theoretical arguments of our algorithms, elaborate the algorithms with a number of examples, and give the analysis of their computational complexity.

We introduce a novel approach for the polygonization of Multi-view Stereo (MVS) meshes of buildings, which results in compact and topologically valid models. The main characteristic of our method is structure awareness, i.e., the recovery and preservation of the initial mesh primitives and their adjacencies. Our proposed methodology consists of three main stages: (a) primitive detection via mesh segmentation, (b) encoding of primitive adjacencies into a graph, and (c) polygonization. Polygonization is based on the approximation of the original mesh with a candidate set of planar polygonal faces. On this candidate set, we apply a binary labelling formulation to select and assemble an optimal set of faces under hard constraints that ensure that the final model is both manifold and watertight. Experiments on various building models demonstrate that our simplification method can produce simpler representations for both closed and open building meshes. Furthermore, these representations highly conform to the initial structure and are ready to be used for spatial analysis. In the moduli space $$ \mathcal{M} $$ _{$g$}of genus-$g$Riemann surfaces, consider the locus $$ \mathcal{R}{\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{O}}} $$ of Riemann surfaces whose Jacobians have real multiplication by the order $$ \mathcal{O} $$ in a totally real number field$F$of degree$g$. If$g$= 3, we compute the closure of $$ \mathcal{R}{\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{O}}} $$ in the Deligne–Mumford compactification of $$ \mathcal{M} $$ _{$g$}and the closure of the locus of eigenforms over $$ \mathcal{R}{\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{O}}} $$ in the Deligne–Mumford compactification of the moduli space of holomorphic 1-forms. For higher genera, we give strong necessary conditions for a stable curve to be in the boundary of $$ \mathcal{R}{\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{O}}} $$ . Boundary strata of $$ \mathcal{R}{\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{O}}} $$ are parameterized by configurations of elements of the field$F$satisfying a strong geometry of numbers type restriction.

We show that the order of the cardinality of maximal complete $1$-systems of loops on non-orientable surfaces is $\sim |\chi|^{2}$. In particular, we determine the exact cardinality of maximal complete $1$-systems of loops on punctured projective planes. To prove these results, we show that the cardinality of maximal systems of arcs pairwise-intersecting at most once on a non-orientable surface is $2|\chi|(|\chi|+1)$.
