In this paper, we apply the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method to 2D Keller--Segel (KS) chemotaxis model. We improve the results upon (Y. Epshteyn and A. Kurganov, SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, 47 (2008), 368-408) and give optimal rate of convergence under special finite element spaces before the blow-up occurs (the exact solutions are smooth). Moreover, to construct physically relevant numerical approximations, we consider $P^1$ LDG scheme and develop a positivity-preserving limiter to the scheme, extending the idea in (Y. Zhang, X. Zhang and C.-W. Shu, Journal of Computational Physics, 229 (2010), 8918-8934). With this limiter, we can prove the $L^1$-stability of the numerical scheme. Numerical experiments are performed to demonstrate the good performance of the positivity-preserving LDG scheme. Moreover, it is known that the chemotaxis model will yield blow-up solutions under certain initial conditions. We numerically demonstrate how to find the approximate blow-up time by using the $L^2$-norm of the $L^1$-stable numerical solution.

InthispaperwedevelopaconservativelocaldiscontinuousGalerkin(LDG) method for the Schro ̈ dinger-Korteweg-de Vries (Sch-KdV) system, which arises in var- ious physical contexts as a model for the interaction of long and short nonlinear waves. Conservative quantities in the discrete version of the number of plasmons, energy of the oscillations and the number of particles are proved for the LDG scheme of the Sch-KdV system. Semi-implicit time discretization is adopted to relax the time step constraint from the high order spatial derivatives. Numerical results for accuracy tests of stationary traveling soliton, and the collision of solitons are shown. Numerical ex- periments illustrate the accuracy and capability of the method.

An important property for finite difference schemes designed on curvilinear meshes is the exact preservation of free-stream solutions. This property is difficult to fulfill for high order conservative essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) finite difference schemes. In this paper we explore an alternative flux formulation for such finite difference schemes which can preserve free-stream solutions, based on the numerical technique for the metric terms, which can be applied to this alternative flux formulation but is difficult to be applied to the standard finite difference formulation. Free-stream and vortex preservation properties are investigated, and comparison with standard finite difference WENO schemes is made. Theoretical derivation and numerical results show that the finite difference WENO schemes based on the alternative flux formulation can preserve free-stream and vortex solutions on both stationary and dynamically generalized coordinate systems, hence giving much better performance than the standard finite difference WENO schemes for such problems.

In this paper, we develop a class of nonlinear compact schemes based on our previous linear central compact schemes with spectral-like resolution [X. Liu, S. Zhang, H. Zhang and C-W. Shu, A new class of central compact schemes with spectral-like resolution I: Linear schemes, Journal of Computational Physics 248 (2013) 235-256]. In our approach, we compute the flux derivatives on the cell-nodes by the physical fluxes on the cell nodes and numerical fluxes on the cell centers. To acquire the numerical fluxes on the cell centers, we perform a weighted hybrid interpolation of an upwind interpolation and a central interpolation. Through systematic analysis and numerical tests, we show that our nonlinear compact scheme has high order, high resolution and low dissipation, and has the same ability to capture strong discontinuities as regular weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) schemes. It is a good choice for the simulation of multiscale problems with shock waves.

How to properly specify boundary conditions for pressure is a longstanding problem for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations with no-slip boundary conditions. An analytical resolution of this issue stems from a recently developed formula for the pressure in terms of the commutator of the Laplacian and Leray projection operators. Here we make use of this formula to (a) improve the accuracy of computing pressure in two kinds of existing time-discrete projection methods implicit in viscosity only, and (b) devise new higher-order accurate time-discrete projection methods that extend a slip-correction idea behind the well-known finite-difference scheme of Kim and Moin. We test these schemes for stability and accuracy using various combinations of C0 finite elements. For all three kinds of time discretization, one can obtain third-order accuracy for both pressure and velocity without a time-step stability restriction of diffusive type. Furthermore, two kinds of projection methods are found stable using piecewise-linear elements for both velocity and pressure.

In our earlier work, we constructed uniformly high order accurate discontinuous Galerkin (DG) and finite volume schemes which preserve positivity of density and pressure for the Euler equations of compressible gas dynamics. In this paper, we present an extension of this framework to construct positivity-preserving high order essentially non-oscillatory (ENO) and weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) finite difference schemes for compressible Euler equations. General equations of state and source terms are also discussed. Numerical tests of the fifth order finite difference WENO scheme are reported to demonstrate the good behavior of such schemes.

This article studies the problem of image restoration of observed images corrupted by impulse noise and mixed Gaussian impulse noise. Since the pixels damaged by impulse noise contain no information about the true image, how to find this set correctly is a very important problem. We propose two methods based on blind inpainting and $\ell_0$ minimization that can simultaneously find the damaged pixels and restore the image. By iteratively restoring the image and updating the set of damaged pixels, these methods have better performance than other methods, as shown in the experiments. In addition, we provide convergence analysis for these methods; these algorithms will converge to coordinatewise minimum points. In addition, they will converge to local minimum points (or with probability one) with some modifications in the algorithms.

The goal of this paper is to develop a novel semi-implicit spectral deferred correction (SDC) time marching method. The method can be used in a large class of problems, especially for highly nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) without easily separating of stiff and non-stiff components, which is more general and efficient comparing with traditional semi-implicit SDC methods. The proposed semi-implicit SDC method is based on low order time integration methods and corrected iteratively. The order of accuracy is increased for each additional iteration. And we also explore its local truncation error analytically. This SDC method is intended to be combined with the method of lines, which provides a flexible framework to develop high order semi-implicit time marching methods for nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). In this paper we mainly focus on the applications of the nonlinear PDEs with higher order spatial derivatives, e.g. convection diffusion equation, the surface diffusion and Willmore flow of graphs, the Cahn– Hilliard equation, the Cahn–Hilliard–Brinkman system and the phase field crystal equation. Coupled with the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) spatial discretization, the fully discrete schemes are all high order accurate in both space and time, and stable numerically with the time step proportional to the spatial mesh size. Numerical experiments are carried out to illustrate the accuracy and capability of the proposed semi-implicit SDC method.

We study a robust and efficient eigensolver for computing a few smallest positive eigenvalues of the three-dimensional Maxwell’s transmission eigenvalue problem. The discretized governing equations by the Nedelec edge element result in a large-scale quadratic eigenvalue problem (QEP) for which the spectrum contains many zero eigenvalues and the coefficient matrices consist of patterns in the matrix form XY^{−1}Z, both of which prevent existing eigenvalue solvers from being efficient. To remedy these difficulties, we rewrite the QEP as a particular nonlinear eigenvalue problem and develop a secant-type iteration, together with an indefinite locally optimal block preconditioned conjugate gradient method (LOBPCG), to sequentially compute the desired positive eigenvalues. Furthermore, we propose a novel method to solve the linear systems in each iteration of LOBPCG. Intensive numerical experiments show that our proposed method is robust, although the desired real eigenvalues are surrounded by complex eigenvalues.

In this paper, we present a staggered discontinuous Galerkin immersed boundary method (SDGIBM) for the numerical approximation of fluid-structure interaction. The immersed boundary method is used to model the fluid-structure interaction, while the fluid flow is governed by incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. One advantage of using Galerkin method over the finite difference method with immersed boundary method is that we can avoid approximations of the Dirac Delta function. Another key ingredient of our method is that our solver for incompressible Navier-Stokes equations combines the advantages of discontinuous Galerkin methods and staggered meshes, and results in many good properties, namely local and global conservations and pointwise divergence-free velocity field by a local postprocessing technique. Furthermore, energy stability is improved by a skew-symmetric discretization of the convection term. We will present numerical results to show the performance of the method.

In this paper, we develop an efficient and energy stable fully-discrete local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method for the Cahn–Hilliard–Hele–Shaw (CHHS) system. The semi-discrete energy stability of the LDG method is proved firstly. Due to the strict time step restriction ( t = O( x4)) of explicit time discretization methods for stability, we introduce a semi- implicit time integration scheme which is based on a convex splitting of the discrete Cahn– Hilliard energy. The unconditional energy stability has been proved for this fully-discrete LDG scheme. The fully-discrete equations at the implicit time level are nonlinear. Thus, the nonlinear Full Approximation Scheme (FAS) multigrid method has been applied to solve this system of algebraic equations, which has been shown the nearly optimal complexity numerically. Numerical results are also given to illustrate the accuracy and capability of the LDG method coupled with the multigrid solver.

In applications such as astrophysics and inertial confinement fusion, there are many three-dimensional cylindrical-symmetric multi-material problems which are usually simulated by Lagrangian schemes in the two-dimensional cylindrical coordinates. For this type of simulation, a critical issue for the schemes is to keep spherical symmetry in the cylindrical coordinate system if the original physical problem has this symmetry. In the past decades, several Lagrangian schemes with such symmetry property have been developed, but all of them are only first order accurate. In this paper, we develop a second order cell-centered Lagrangian scheme for solving compressible Euler equations in cylindrical coordinates, based on the control volume discretizations, which is designed to have uniformly second order accuracy and capability to preserve one-dimensional spherical symmetry in a two-dimensional cylindrical geometry when computed on an equal-angle-zoned initial grid. The scheme maintains several good properties such as conservation for mass, momentum and total energy, and the geometric conservation law. Several two-dimensional numerical examples in cylindrical coordinates are presented to demonstrate the good performance of the scheme in terms of accuracy, symmetry, non-oscillation and robustness. The advantage of higher order accuracy is demonstrated in these examples.

We consider the solution of the large-scale nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equation XCX − XD − AX + B = 0, with M ≡ [D,−C;−B,A] ∈ R(n1+n2)×(n1+n2) being a nonsingular M-matrix. In addition, A and D are sparselike, with the products A−1u, A−⊤u, D−1v, and D−⊤v computable in O(n) complexity (with n = max{n1, n2}), for some vectors u and v, and B, C are low ranked. The structure-preserving doubling algorithms (SDA) by Guo, Lin, and Xu [Numer. Math., 103 (2006), pp. 392–412] is adapted, with the appropriate applications of the Sherman–Morrison– Woodbury formula and the sparse-plus-low-rank representations of various iterates. The resulting large-scale doubling algorithm has an O(n) computational complexity and memory requirement per iteration and converges essentially quadratically. A detailed error analysis, on the effects of truncation of iterates with an explicit forward error bound for the approximate solution from the SDA, and some numerical results will be presented.

In this paper, we propose a new stabilized linear finite element method for solving reaction-convection-diffusion equations with arbitrary magnitudes of reaction and diffusion. The key feature of the new method is that the test function in the stabilization term is taken in the adjoint-operator-like form $-\varepsilon \Delta v- ({\mbf a}\cdot\nabla v)/\gamma+\sigma v$, where the parameter $\gamma$ is appropriately designed to adjust the convection strength to achieve high accuracy and stability. We derive the stability estimates for the finite element solutions and establish the explicit dependence of $L^2$ and $H^1$ error bounds on the diffusivity, modulus of the convection field, reaction coefficient and the mesh size. The analysis shows that the proposed method is suitable for a wide range of mesh P\'{e}clet numbers and mesh Damk\"{o}hler numbers. More specifically, if the diffusivity $\varepsilon$ is sufficiently small with $\varepsilon < \Vert{\mbf a}\Vert h$ and the reaction coefficient $\sigma$ is large enough such that $\Vert{\mbf a}\Vert < \sigma h$, then the method exhibits optimal convergence rates in both $L^2$ and $H^1$ norms. However, for a small reaction coefficient satisfying $\Vert{\mbf a}\Vert \ge \sigma h$, the method behaves like the well-known streamline upwind/Petrov-Galerkin formulation of Brooks and Hughes. Several numerical examples exhibiting boundary or interior layers are given to demonstrate the high performance of the proposed method. Moreover, we apply the developed method to time-dependent reaction-convection-diffusion problems and simulation results show the efficiency of the approach.

In this paper, we consider the harmonic extension problem, which is widely used in many applications of machine learning. We formulate the harmonic extension as solving a Laplace-Beltrami equation with Dirichlet boundary condition. We use the point integral method (PIM) to solve the Laplace-Beltrami equation. The basic idea of the PIM method is to approximate the Laplace equation using an integral equation, which is easy to be discretized from points. Based on the integral equation, we found that traditional graph Laplacian method (GLM) may fail to approximate the harmonic functions in the classical sense. For the Laplace-Beltrami equation with Dirichlet boundary, we can prove the convergence of the point integral method. The point integral method is also very easy to implement, which only requires a minor modification of the graph Laplacian. One important application of the harmonic extension in machine learning is semi-supervised learning. We run a popular semi-supervised learning algorithm by Zhu et al. over a couple of well-known datasets and compare the performance of the aforementioned approaches. Our experiments show the PIM performs the best. We also apply PIM to an image recovery problem and show it outperforms GLM. Finally, on a model problem of Laplace-Beltrami equation with Dirichlet boundary, we prove the convergence of the point integral method.

In this paper, a homotopy continuation method for the computation of nonnegative Z-/H-eigenpairs of a nonnegative tensor is presented. We show that the homotopy continuation method is guaranteed to compute a nonnegative eigenpair. Additionally, using degree analysis, we show that the number of positive Z-eigenpairs of an irreducible nonnegative tensor is odd. A novel homotopy continuation method is proposed to compute an odd number of positive Z-eigenpairs, and some numerical results are presented.

In this paper, we develop an energy stable fully discrete discontinuous Galekin (DG) finite element method for the thin film epitaxy problem. Based on the method of lines, we construct and prove the energy stability of the spatial semi-discrete DG scheme firstly. To avoid the strict time step restriction of the explicit time integration method, the first order convex splitting method is used to get an unconditionally stable fully discrete DG method, which is a linearly implicit scheme for this nonlinear problem. The energy stability of the fully discrete convex splitting DG scheme is also proved. To improve the temporal accuracy, spectral deferred correction (SDC) method is adapted to achieve the high order accuracy in both time and space. Combining with the convex splitting method, the SDC method can be linearly solvable, high order accurate and stable in our numerical tests. These advantages ensure that the resulting fully discrete DG scheme is efficient to perform the long time simulation of the thin film epitaxy model. Numerical experiments of the accuracy and long time simulation show the capability and efficiency of the method.

We consider numerical boundary conditions for high order finite difference schemes for solving convection-diffusion equations on arbitrary geometry. The two main difficulties for numerical boundary conditions in such situations are: (1) the wide stencil of the high order finite difference operator requires special treatment for a few ghost points near the boundary; (2) the physical boundary may not coincide with grid points in a Cartesian mesh and may intersect with the mesh in an arbitrary fashion. For purely convection equations, the so-called inverse Lax-Wendroff procedure, in which we convert the normal derivatives into the time derivatives and tangential derivatives along the physical boundary by using the equations, have been quite successful. In this paper, we extend this methodology to convection-diffusion equations. It turns out that this extension is non-trivial, because totally different boundary treatments are needed for the diffusion-dominated and the convection-dominated regimes. We design a careful combination of the boundary treatments for the two regimes and obtain a stable and accurate boundary condition for general convection-diffusion equations. We provide extensive numerical tests for one- and two-dimensional problems involving both scalar equations and systems, including the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, to demonstrate the good performance of our numerical boundary conditions.
