Multivariate public key cryptosystems are being focused on as candidates for post-quantum cryptography. Rainbow is one of the most efficient signature schemes in multivariate public key cryptosystems. The main drawback of Rainbow is that their key size is much larger than that of RSA and ECC. In this paper, we propose an efficient variant of Rainbow that has a shorter secret key (and thus generates signatures faster) than the corresponding original Rainbow. In our scheme, we divide each layer of Rainbow into smaller blocks by using diagonal matrix representations. The size of the smaller blocks can be flexibly selected, and this enables us to carefully choose secure parameters so that our proposed scheme is secure against known attacks such as rank attacks, direct attacks, and UOV attack. We estimate that the secret key size of our proposed scheme with 100-bit security is smaller by about 40% than that of the original Rainbow. In addition, an implementation of our scheme in the C language is seen to generate signature faster by 40%.

MIFARE Classic is the world’s most widely deployed RFID (radio-frequency identification) technology. It was claimed to be cryptographically protected by the proprietary Crypto-1 stream cipher. However, it proved inadequate after weaknesses in the design and implementation of Crypto-1 and MIFARE Classic started surfacing since late 2007 [7, 8, 12–17]. Some operators of MIFARE Classic-based systems reacted by upgrading to more secure alternatives such as MIFARE DESFire. However, many (especially in Asia) opted to “patch” MIFARE Classic instead. Their risk analysis might have gone as follows: “The most serious threat comes from efficient card-only attacks, where the attacker only needs an off-the-shelf reader and a PC to tamper a target tag. All efficient card-only attacks depend on certain implementation flaws. Ergo, if we just fix these flaws, we can stop the most serious attacks without an expensive infrastructure upgrade.” One such prominent case is “EasyCard 2.0,” today accepted in Taiwan as a means of electronic payment not only in public transportation but also in convenient stores, drug stores, eateries, cafes, supermarkets, book stores, movie theaters, etc. Obviously, the whole “patching” approach is questionable because Crypto-1 is fundamentally a weak cipher. In support of the proposition, we present a new card-only attack based on state-of-the-art algebraic differential cryptanalytic techniques [1, 2]. Still using the same cheap reader as previous attacks, it takes 2–15 min of computation on a PC to recover a secret key of EasyCard 2.0 after 10–20 h of data collection. We hope the new attack makes our point sufficiently clear, and we urge that all MIFARE-Classic operators with important transactions such as electronic payment upgrade their systems to the more secure alternatives soon.

In this paper, we first prove an explicit formula which bounds the degree of regularity of the family of HFEv (“HFE with vinegar”) and HFEv- (“HFE with vinegar and minus”) multivariate public key cryptosystems over a finite field of size q. The degree of regularity of the polynomial system derived from an HFEv- system is less than or equal to \frac{(q−1)(r+v+a−1)}{2}+2 if q is even and r+a is odd, \frac{(q−1)(r+v+a−1)}{2}+2 otherwise, where the parameters v, D, q, and a are parameters of the cryptosystem denoting respectively the number of vinegar variables, the degree of the HFE polynomial, the base field size, and the number of removed equations, and r is the “rank” paramter which in the general case is determined by D and q as r=⌊log_q (D−1)⌋+1. In particular, setting a = 0 gives us the case of HFEv where the degree of regularity is bound by \frac{(q−1)(r+v−1)}{2}+2 if q is even and r is odd, \frac{(q−1)(r+v)}{2}+2 otherwise. This formula provides the first solid theoretical estimate of the complexity of algebraic cryptanalysis of the HFEv- signature scheme, and as a corollary bounds on the complexity of a direct attack against the QUARTZ digital signature scheme. Based on some experimental evidence, we evaluate the complexity of solving QUARTZ directly using F_4/F_5 or similar Gröbner methods to be around 2^{92}.

There are several attempts to build asymmetric pubic key encryption schemes based on multivariate polynomials of degree two over a finite field. However, most of them are insecure. The common defect in many of them comes from the fact that certain quadratic forms associated with their central maps have low rank, which makes them vulnerable to the MinRank attack. We propose a new simple and efficient multivariate pubic key encryption scheme based on matrix multiplication, which does not have such a low rank property. The new scheme will be called Simple Matrix Scheme or ABC in short. We also propose some parameters for practical and secure implementation.

In this paper, we propose an algebraic broadcast attack against NTRU, which recovers a single message encrypted multiple times using different NTRU public keys. Namely, when a message is broadcasted, under some reasonable assumptions, our attack can be completed in polynomial time and space. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first successful broadcast attack against NTRU.

Let X = (x_1,..,x_n) and Y = (y_1,...,y_m) be a pair of corresponding plaintext and ciphertext for a cryptosystem. We define an embedded surface of this cryptosystem as any polynomial equation: E(X,Y)=E(x_1,..,x_n,y_1,...,y_m)=0, which is satisfied by all such pairs. In this paper, we present a new attack on the multivariate public key cryptosystems from Diophantine equations developed by Gao and Heindl by using the embedded surfaces associated to this family of multivariate cryptosystems.

In this paper, we present and prove the first closed formula bounding the degree of regularity of an HFE system over an arbitrary finite field. Though these bounds are not necessarily optimal, they can be used to deduce 1. if D, the degree of the corresponding HFE polynomial, and q, the size of the corresponding finite field, are fixed, inverting HFE system is polynomial for all fields; 2. if D is of the scale O(n^α) where n is the number of variables in an HFE system, and q is fixed, inverting HFE systems is quasi-polynomial for all fields. We generalize and prove rigorously similar results by Granboulan, Joux and Stern in the case when q = 2 that were communicated at Crypto 2006.

The public key of the Oil-Vinegar scheme consists of a set of m quadratic equations in m + n variables over a finite field F_q. Kipnis and Shamir broke the balanced Oil-Vinegar scheme where d = n − m = 0 by finding equivalent keys of the cryptosytem. Later their method was extended by Kipnis et al to attack the unbalanced case where 0 < d < m and d is small with a complexity of O(q^{d−1} m^4). This method uses the matrices associated with the quadratic polynomials in the public key, which needs to be symmetric and invertible. In this paper, we give an optimized search method for Kipnis el al’s attack. Moreover, for the case that the finite field is of characteristic 2, we find the situation becomes very subtle, which, however, was totally neglected in the original work of Kipnis et al. We show that the Kipnis-Shamir method does not work if the field characteristic is 2 and d is a small odd number, and we fix the situation by proposing an alternative method and give an equivalent key recovery attack of complexity O(q^{d+1} m^4). We also prove an important experimental observation by Ding et al for the Kipnis-Shamir attack on balanced Oil-Vinegar schemes in characteristic 2.

In this paper, we introduce a new method to avoid zero reductions in Gröbner basis computation. We call this method LASyz, which stands for Lineal Algebra to compute Syzygies. LASyz uses exhaustively the information of both principal syzygies and non-trivial syzygies to avoid zero reductions. All computation is done using linear algebra techniques. LASyz is easy to understand and implement. The method does not require to compute Gröbner bases of subsequences of generators incrementally and it imposes no restrictions on the reductions allowed. We provide a complete theoretical foundation for the LASyz method and we describe an algorithm to compute Gröbner bases for zero dimensional ideals based on this foundation. A qualitative comparison with similar algorithms is provided and the performance of the algorithm is illustrated with experimental data.
