We develop a new technique to study ranks of multiplication maps for linear series via limit linear series and degenerations to chains of elliptic curves. We prove an elementary criterion and apply it to proving cases of the Maximal Rank Conjecture. We give a new proof of the case of quadrics, and also treat several families in the case of cubics. Our proofs do not require restrictions on direction of approach, so we recover new information on the locus in the moduli space of curves on which the maximal rank condition fails.

We study the non-klt locus of singularities of pairs. We show that given a pair (X, B) and a projective morphism X → Z with connected fibres such that −(KX +B) is nef over Z, the non-klt locus of (X, B) has at most two connected components near each fibre of X → Z. This was conjectured by Hacon and Han. In a different direction we answer a question of Mark Gross on connectedness of the non-klt loci of certain pairs. This is motivated by constructions in Mirror Symmetry.

In this paper we give a proposal for mirrors to (0,2) supersymmetric gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs), for those (0,2) GLSMs which are deformations of (2,2) GLSMs. Specifically, we propose a construction of (0,2) mirrors for (0,2) GLSMs with E terms that are linear and diagonal, reducing to both the Hori-Vafa prescription as well as a recent (2,2) nonabelian mirrors proposal on the (2,2) locus. For the special case of abelian (0,2) GLSMs, two of the authors have previously proposed a systematic construction, which is both simplified and generalized by the proposal here.

We show that Q-Fano varieties of fixed dimension with anti-canonical degrees and alpha-invariants bounded from below form a bounded family. As a corollary, K-semistable Q-Fano varieties of fixed dimension with anti-canonical degrees bounded from below form a bounded family.

We have developed a mathematical theory of the topological vertexa theory that was originally proposed by M Aganagic, A Klemm, M Mario and C Vafa on effectively computing GromovWitten invariants of smooth toric CalabiYau threefolds derived from duality between open string theory of smooth CalabiYau threefolds and ChernSimons theory on three-manifolds.

We discuss the Kodaira problem for uniruled Kähler spaces. Building on a construction due to Voisin, we give an example of a uniruled Kähler space X such that every run of the K_X-MMP immediately terminates with a Mori fibre space, yet X does not admit an algebraic approximation. Our example also shows that for a Mori fibration, approximability of the base does not imply approximability of the total space.

In this article we provide a proof of the Iitaka Cnm conjecture for algebraic fiber spaces over tori.

The theory of virtual fundamental class defines important invariants such as the Gromov–Witten and the Donaldson– Thomas invariants. It has been generalized to the cosection localized virtual cycle which has applications in Seiberg– Witten, Fan–Jarvis–Ruan–Witten and other invariants. In this paper, we prove the formulas of virtual pullback, torus localization and wall crossing for cosection localized virtual cycles.

As a continuation of\lianyaufour, we study modular properties of the periods, the mirror maps and Yukawa couplings for multi-moduli Calabi-Yau varieties. In Part A of this paper, motivated by the recent work of Kachru-Vafa, we degenerate a three-moduli family of Calabi-Yau toric varieties along a codimension one subfamily which can be described by the vanishing of certain Mori coordinate, corresponding to going to the``large volume limit''in a certain direction. Then we see that the deformation space of the subfamily is the same as a certain family of K3 toric surfaces. This family can in turn be studied by further degeneration along a subfamily which in the end is described by a family of elliptic curves. The periods of the K3 family (and hence the original Calabi-Yau family) can be described by the squares of the periods of the elliptic curves. The consequences include:(1) proofs of various conjectural formulas of physicists\vk\lkm involving mirror maps and modular functions;(2) new identities involving multi-variable hypergeometric series and modular functions--generalizing\lianyaufour. In Part B, we study for two-moduli families the perturbation series of the mirror map and the type A Yukawa couplings near certain large volume limits. Our main tool is a new class of polynomial PDEs associated with Fuchsian PDE systems. We derive the first few terms in the perturbation series. For the case of degree 12 hypersurfaces in\P^ 4 [6, 2, 2, 1, 1], in one limit the series of the couplings are expressed in terms of the j function. In another limit, they are expressed in terms of rational functions. The latter give explicit formulas for infinite sequences of``instanton

We study BPS states of 5d N=1 SU(2) Yang-Mills theory on S^1×R^4. Geometric engineering relates these to enumerative invariants for the local Hirzebruch surface F_0. We illustrate computations of Vafa-Witten invariants via exponential networks, verifying fiber-base symmetry of the spectrum at certain points in moduli space, and matching with mirror descriptions based on quivers and exceptional collections. Albeit infinite, parts of the spectrum organize in families described by simple algebraic equations. Varying the radius of the M-theory circle interpolates smoothly with the spectrum of 4d N=2 Seiberg-Witten theory, recovering spectral networks in the limit.

We study stable curves of arithmetic genus 2 which admit two morphisms of finite degree d, resp. (d,d′), onto smooth elliptic curves, with particular attention to the case d prime.

Let X_\Sigma be a toric surface and let (\check {X}, W) be its Landau-Ginzburg (LG) mirror where W is the Hori-Vafa potential as shown in their preprint. We apply asymptotic analysis to study the extended deformation theory of the LG model (\check {X}, W), and prove that semi-classical limits of Fourier modes of a specific class of Maurer-Cartan solutions naturally give rise to tropical disks in X with Maslov index 0 or 2, the latter of which produces a universal unfolding of W. For X = \mathbb{P}^2, our construction reproduces Gross' perturbed potential W_n [Adv. Math. 224 (2010), pp. 169-245] which was proven to be the universal unfolding of W written in canonical coordinates. We also explain how the extended deformation theory can be used to reinterpret the jumping phenomenon of W_n across walls of the scattering diagram formed by Maslov index 0 tropical disks originally observed by Gross in the same work (in the case of X = \mathbb{P}^2).

In this paper, we give a simple proof of Mirzakhanis recursion formula of Weil-Petersson volumes of moduli spaces of curves using the Witten-Kontsevich theorem. We also briefly describe a very general recursive phenomenon in the intersection theory of moduli spaces of curves. In particular, we present several new recursion formulas for higher degree classes.

We construct a smooth algebraic stack of tuples consisting of genus two nodal curves, line bundles, and twisted fields. It leads to a desingularization of the moduli of genus two stable maps to projective spaces. The construction is based on systematical application of the theory of stacks with twisted fields (STF), which has its prototype appeared in arXiv:1906.10527 and arXiv:1201.2427 and is fully developed in this article. The results of this article are the second step of a series of works toward the resolutions of the moduli of stable maps of higher genera.

Let k be the algebraic closure of a finite field of odd characteristic p, and X a smooth projective scheme over the Witt ring W (k) which is geometrically connected in characteristic zero. We introduce the notion of Higgs-de Rham flow1 and prove that the category of periodic Higgs-de Rham flows over X/W(k) is equivalent to the category of Fontaine modules, hence further equivalent to the category of crystalline representations of the e ́tale fundamental group π_1(X_K ) of the generic fiber of X, after Fontaine-Laffaille and Faltings, where K is the fraction field of W(k). Moreover, we prove that every semistable Higgs bundle over the special fiber X_k of X of rank ≤ p initiates a semistable Higgs–de Rham flow and thus those of rank ≤ p − 1 with trivial Chern classes induce k-representations of π_1(X_K ). A fundamental construction in this paper is the inverse Cartier transform over a truncated Witt ring. In characteristic p, it was constructed by Ogus–Vologodsky in the nonabelian Hodge theory in positive characteristic; in the affine local case, our construction is related to the local Ogus–Vologodsky correspondence of Shiho.

Let (X, ) be a pair. We study how the condition (X, ) causes surjectivity or birationality of the Albanese map and the Albanese morphism of (X, ) in both characteristic (X, ) and characteristic (X, ) . In particular in characteristic (X, ) we generalize Kawamata's result to the cases of log canonial pairs, and in characteristic (X, ) we generalize a result of Hacon-Patakfalvi to the cases of log pairs. Moreover we show that if (X, ) is a normal projective threefold in characteristic (X, ) , the coefficients of the components of (X, ) are (X, ) and (X, ) is semiample, then the Albanese morphism of (X, ) is surjective under reasonable assumptions on (X, ) and the singularities of the general fibers of the Albanese morphism. This is a positive characteristic analog in dimension 3 of a result of Zhang on a conjecture of Demailly-Peternell-Schneider.

We analyze the asymptotic behavior of certain twisted orbital integrals arising from the study of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. The main tools include the Base Change Fundamental Lemma and q-analogues of the Kostant partition functions. As an application we prove a conjecture of Miaofen Chen and Xinwen Zhu, relating the set of irreducible components of an affine Deligne-Lusztig variety modulo the action of the σ-centralizer group to the Mirkovic-Vilonen basis of a certain weight space of a representation of the Langlands dual group.

Let (X, g) be a compact Riemannian manifold with quasi-positive Riemannian scalar curvature. If there exists a complex structure J compatible with g, then the Kodaira dimension of (X, J) is equal to −∞ and the canonical bundle KX is not pseudo-effective. We also introduce the complex Yamabe number λc(X) for compact complex manifold X, and show that if λ_c(X) is greater than 0, then κ(X) is equal to −∞; moreover, if X is also spin, then the Hirzebruch A-hat genus \hat{A}(X) is zero.

We associate a half-integer number, called the quantum index, to algebraic curves in the real plane satisfying to certain conditions. The area encompassed by the logarithmic image of such curves is equal to π2 times the quantum index of the curve, and thus has a discrete spectrum of values. We use the quantum index to refine enumeration of real rational curves in a way consistent with the Block–Göttsche invariants from tropical enumerative geometry.
