We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian for astrip in \mathbb{R}^2 with one straight boundary and a width \mathbb{R}^2 , where \mathbb{R}^2 is a smooth function of acompact support with a length 2<i>b</i>. We show that in the criticalcase, \mathbb{R}^2 , the operator has nobound statesfor small \mathbb{R}^2 .On the otherhand, a weakly bound state existsprovided \mathbb{R}^2 . In thatcase, there are positive <i>c</i> ₁,<i>c</i> ₂ suchthat the corresponding eigenvalue satisfies \mathbb{R}^2 for all \mathbb{R}^2 sufficiently small.

We consider the Laplacian in a straight planar strip with Dirichlet boundary which has two Neumann'windows' of the same length, the centres of which are 2l apart, and study the asymptotic behaviour of the discrete spectrum as l. It is shown that there are pairs of eigenvalues around each isolated eigenvalue of a single-window strip and their distances vanish exponentially in the limit l. We derive an asymptotic expansion also in the case where a single window gives rise to a threshold resonance which the presence of the other window turns into a single isolated eigenvalue.

We consider a Schrdinger particle on a graph consisting of <i>N</i> links joined at a single point. Each link supports a real locally integrable potential <i>V</i> _<i>j</i>; the self-adjointness is ensured by the type boundary condition at the vertex. If all the links are semi-infinite and ideally coupled, the potential decays as <i>x</i> ¹ along each of them, is nonrepulsive in the mean and weak enough, the corresponding Schrdinger operator has a single negative eigenvalue; we find its asymptotic behavior. We also derive a bound on the number of bound states and explain how the coupling constant may be interpreted in terms of a family of squeezed potentials.

The longstanding open problem of approximating all singular vertex couplings in a quantum graph is solved. We present a construction in which the edges are decoupled; an each pair of their endpoints is joined by an edge carrying a potential and a vector potential coupled to the loose edges by a coupling. It is shown that if the lengths of the connecting edges shrink to zero and the potentials are properly scaled, the limit can yield any prescribed singular vertex coupling, and moreover, that such an approximation converges in the norm-resolvent sense.

We discuss a general parametrization for vertices of quantum graphs and show, in particular, how the 's and 'couplings at an n-edge vertex can be approximated by means of n+ 1 couplings of the type provided the latter are properly scaled.

We consider rectangular graph superlattices of sides l 1, l 2 with the wave-function coupling at the junctions either of the type, when they are continuous and the sum of their derivatives is proportional to the common value at the junction with a coupling constant , or the s type with the roles of functions and derivatives reversed; the latter corresponds to the situations where the junctions are realized by complicated geometric scatterers. We show that the band spectra have a hidden fractal structure with respect to the ratio := l 1/l 2. If the latter is an irrational badly approximable by rationals, lattices have no gaps in the weak-coupling case. We study the behavior of a quantum particle confined to a hard-wall strip of a constant width in which there is a finite number<i>N</i>of point perturbations. Constructing the resolvent of the corresponding Hamiltonian by means of Krein's formula, we analyze its spectral and scattering properties. The bound state problem is analogous to that of point interactions in the plane: since a two-dimensional point interaction is never repulsive, there are<i>m</i>discrete eigenvalues, 1<i>m</i><i>N</i>, the lowest of which is nondegenerate. On the other hand, due to the presence of the boundary the point interactions give rise to infinite series of resonances; if the coupling is weak they approach the thresholds of higher transverse modes. We prove an approximation result showing how operators of the type (x ) in L^ 2 ({\bb R}^ 2), where is a graph, can be modelled in the strong resolvent sense by point-interaction Hamiltonians with an appropriate arrangement of the potentials. The result is illustrated on finding the spectral properties in cases when is a ring or a star. Furthermore, we use this method to indicate that scattering on an infinite curve which is locally close to a loop shape or has multiple bends may exhibit resonances due to quantum tunnelling or repeated reflections.

We study bound states of the two-dimensional Helmholtz equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions in an open geometry given by two straight leads of the same width which cross at an angle . Such a four-terminal junction with a tunable can realized experimentally if a right-angle structure is filled by a ferrite. It is known that for = 90 there is one proper bound state and one eigenvalue embedded in the continuum. We show that the number of eigenvalues becomes larger with increasing asymmetry and the bound-state energies are increasing as functions of in the interval (0, 90). Moreover, states which are sufficiently strongly bound exist in pairs with a small energy difference and opposite parities. Finally, we discuss how the bound states transform with increasing into quasibound states with a complex wave vector.

We study a free quantum motion on periodically structured manifolds composed of elementary two-dimensional'cells' connected either by linear segments or through points where the two cells touch. The general theory is illustrated with numerous examples in which the elementary components are spherical surfaces arranged into chains in a straight or zigzag way, or two-dimensional square lattice'carpets'. We show that the spectra of such systems have an infinite number of gaps and that the latter dominate the spectrum at high energies.
