An orthogonal discrete auditory transform (ODAT) from sound signal to spectrum is constructed by combining the auditory spreading matrix of Schroeder et. al. and the time one map of a discrete nonlocal Schrodinger equation. Thanks to the dispersive smoothing property of the Schrodinger evolution, ODAT spectrum is a smoother than that of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) consistent with human audition. ODAT and DFT are compared in signal denoising tests with spectral thresholding method. The signals are noisy speech segments. ODAT outperforms DFT in signal to noise ratio (SNR) when the noise level is relatively high.

Variational principle of Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piskunov (KPP) minimal front speeds provides a fast and accurate way for speed calculations. A variational principle based computation is carried out on a large ensemble of KPP random speeds through spatial, mean zero, stationary, Gaussian random shear flows inside two dimensional channel domains. In the regime of small root mean square (rms) shear amplitude, the enhancement of the ensemble averaged KPP front speed obeys the quadratic law. In the large rms amplitude regime, the enhancement follows the linear law. An asymptotic ensemble averaged speed formula is derived and agrees well with the numerics. Related theoretical results are presented with a brief outline of the ideas in the proofs. We propose to incorporate a weighted difference of anisotropic and isotropic total variation (TV) norms into a relaxed formulation of the two phase Mumford-Shah (MS) model for image segmentation. We show results exceeding those obtained by the MS model when using the standard TV norm to regularize partition boundaries. In particular, examples illustrating the qualitative differences between the proposed model and the standard MS one are shown. A fast numerical method is introduced to minimize the proposed model utilizing the difference-of-convex algorithm (DCA) and the primal dual hybrid gradient (PDHG) method.

Rapid and reliable detection and identification of unknown chemical substances are critical to homeland security. It is challenging to identify chemical components from a wide range of explosives. There are two key steps involved. One is a non-destructive and informative spectroscopic technique for data acquisition. The other is an associated library of reference features along with a computational method for feature matching and meaningful detection within or beyond the library.

Image matching is a fundamental problem in computer vision. One of the well-known techniques is SIFT (scale-invariant feature transform). SIFT searches for and extracts robust features in hierarchical image scale spaces for object identification. However it often lacks efficiency as it identifies many insignificant features such as tree leaves and grass tips in a natural building image. We introduce a content adaptive image matching approach by preprocessing the image with a color-entropy based segmentation and harmonic inpainting. Natural structures such as tree leaves have both high entropy and distinguished color, and so such a combined measure can be both discriminative and robust. The harmonic inpainting smoothly interpolates the image functions over the tree regions and so blurrs and reduces the features and their unnecessary matching there. We study waves in convex scalar conservation laws under noisy initial perturbations. It is known that the building blocks of these waves are shock and rarefaction waves, both are invariant under hyperbolic scaling. Noisy perturbations can generate complicated wave patterns, such as diffusion process of shock locations. However we show that under the hyperbolic scaling, the solutions converge in the sense of distribution to the unperturbed waves. In particular, randomly perturbed shock waves move at the unperturbed velocity in the scaling limit. Analysis makes use of the Hopf formula of the related Hamilton-Jacobi equation and regularity estimates of noisy processes.

We study a Maxwell-Bloch system describing the dynamics of single-longitudinal Raman lasers in the two transverse space dimensions. Raman lasing is generated by a coherent external pump laser, as a three-wave interaction involving two optical and one material wave. On the other hand, a two-level laser involves incoherent external pumping through, for example, an electrical discharge or flashlamp. Raman lasers have the advantage of being tunable and display a novel explicit nonlinear detuning between the pump and laser emission frequencies. Consequently these lasers exhibit much richer nonlinear dynamics. We establish the global existence of classical solutions, and show that for periodic domains the dynamics is governed by a global smooth attractor of finite dimensions. We consider diffusivity of random walks with transition probabilities depending on the number of consecutive traversals of the last traversed edge, the so called senile reinforced random walk (SeRW). In one dimension, the walk is known to be sub-diffusive with identity reinforcement function. We perturb the model by introducing a small probability \delta of escaping the last traversed edge at each step. The perturbed SeRW model is diffusive for any \delta , with enhanced diffusivity (\delta ) in the small \delta regime. We further study stochastically perturbed SeRW models by having the last edge escape probability of the form \delta with \delta 's being independent random variables. Enhanced diffusivity in such models are logarithmically close to the so called residual diffusivity (positive in the zero \delta limit), with diffusivity between \delta and \delta . Finally, we generalize our results to higher dimensions where the unperturbed model is already diffusive. The enhanced diffusivity can be as much as \delta .

We perform a computationl study of front speeds of G-equation models in time dependent cellular flows. The G-equations arise in premixed turbulent combustion, and are Hamilton-Jacobi type level set partial differential equations (PDEs). The curvature-strain G-equations are also non-convex with degenerate diffusion. The computation is based on monotone finite difference discretization and weighted essentially nonoscillatory (WENO) methods. We found that the large time front speeds lock into the frequency of time periodic cellular flows in curvature-strain G-equations similar to what occurs in the basic inviscid G-equation. However, such frequency locking phenomenon disappears in viscous G-equation, and in the inviscid G-equation if time periodic oscillation of the cellular flow is replaced by time stochastic oscillation.

In this paper, we develop a novel blind source separation (BSS) method for nonnegative and correlated data, particularly for the nearly degenerate data. The motivation lies in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, where a multiple mixture NMR spectra are recorded to identify chemical compounds with similar structures (degeneracy).
