Rigidity question have attracted much interest in the past. In the compact case, we have the famous work of Calabi and Vesentini [3] and Mostow [17]. Whereas Calabi and Vesentini proved a local version, namely that compact quotients of bounded symmetric domains admit no nontrivial deformations in case the domain is irreducible and of complex dimension at least 2, Mostow proved a global rigidity result, at the expense, however, of working only within the class of quotients of symmetric domains. Mostow's work is based on quasiconformal mappings. A different analytic approach was recently undertaken by Siu [22]. If M is a compact K~ ihler manifold diffeomorphic (or, more generally, homotopically equivalent) to a quotient N of an irreducible bounded symmetric domain, he studied a harmonic homotopy equivalence the existence of which is assured by the theorem of EeUs and Sampson, and demonstrated that

This is a continuation of our first paper in [WY16]. There are two purposes of this paper: One is to give a proof of the main result in [WY16] without going through the argument depending on numerical effectiveness. The other one is to provide a proof of our conjecture, mentioned in [TY], where the assumption of negative holomorphic sectional curvature is dropped to quasi-negative. We should note that a solution to our conjecture is also provided by Diverio-Trapani [DT]. Both proofs depend on our argument in [WY16]. But our argument here makes use of the argument given by the second author and Cheng in [CY75].

We consider the scalar wave equation in the Kerr geometry for Cauchy data which is smooth and compactly supported outside the event horizon. We derive an integral representation which expresses the solution as a superposition of solutions of the radial and angular ODEs which arise in the separation of variables. In particular, we prove completeness of the solutions of the separated ODEs.

New heterotic torsional geometries are constructed as orbifolds of T^ 2 bundles over K3. The discrete symmetries considered can be freely-acting or have fixed points and/or fixed curves. We give explicit constructions when the base K3 is Kummer or algebraic. The orbifold geometries can preserve N= 1, 2 supersymmetry in four dimensions or be non-supersymmetric.

In medical imaging, parameterized 3D surface models are of great interest for anatomical modeling and visualization, statistical comparisons of anatomy, and surface-based registration and signal processing. Here we introduce a parameterization method based on algebraic functions. By solving the Yamabe equation with the Ricci flow method, we can conformally map a brain surface to a multi-hole disk. The resulting parameterizations do not have any singularities and are intrinsic and stable. To illustrate the technique, we computed parameterizations of several types of anatomical surfaces in MRI scans of the brain, including the hippocampi and the cerebral cortices with various landmark curves labeled. For the cerebral cortical surfaces, we show the parameterization results are consistent with selected landmark curves and can be matched to each other using constrained harmonic maps. Embedded cores are being increasingly used in the design of large system-on-a-chip (SoC). Because of the high complexity of SoC, the design verification is a challenge for system integrators. To reduce the verification complexity, the port-order fault (POF) model has been used for verifying core-based designs (Tang and Jou, 1998). In this paper, we present an automatic-verification pattern generation (AVPG) for SoC design verification based on the POF model and perform experiments on combinational and sequential benchmarks. Experimental results show that our AVPG can efficiently generate verification patterns with high POF coverage.

We find some integrability conditions for low-dimensional manifolds to admit metrics with nonnegative scalar curvature. In particular, we solve the positive action conjecture in general relativity in the affirmative.

Gravitational waves are predicted by the general theory of relativity. It has been shown that gravitational waves have a nonlinear memory, displacing test masses permanently. This is called the Christodoulou memory. We proved that the electromagnetic field contributes at highest order to the nonlinear memory effect of gravitational waves, enlarging the permanent displacement of test masses. In experiments like LISA or LIGO which measure distances of test masses, the Christodoulou memory will manifest itself as a permanent displacement of these objects. It has been suggested to detect the Christodoulou memory effect using radio telescopes investigating small changes in pulsar's pulse arrival times. The latter experiments are based on present-day technology and measure changes in frequency.
