The effect of errors in variables in nonparametric regression estimation is examined. To account for errors in covariates, deconvolution is involved in the construction of a new class of kernel estimators. It is shown that optimal local and global rates of convergence of these kernel estimators can be characterized by the tail behavior of the characteristic function of the error distribution. In fact, there are two types of rates of convergence according to whether the error is ordinary smooth or super smooth. It is also shown that these results hold uniformly over a class of joint distributions of the response and the covariate, which is rich enough for many practical applications. Furthermore, to achieve optimality, we show that the convergence rates of all possible estimators have a lower bound possessed by the kernel estimators.

A variable screening procedure via correlation learning was proposed by Fan and Lv (2008) to reduce dimensionality in sparse ultra-high-dimensional models. Even when the true model is linear, the marginal regression can be highly nonlinear. To address this issue, we further extend the correlation learning to marginal nonparametric learning. Our nonparametric independence screening (NIS) is a specific type of sure independence screening. We propose several closely related variable screening procedures. We show that with general nonparametric models, under some mild technical conditions, the proposed independence screening methods have a sure screening property. The extent to which the dimensionality can be reduced by independence screening is also explicitly quantified. As a methodological extension, we also propose a data-driven thresholding and an iterative nonparametric independence

Using locally polynomial regression, we develop nonparametric estimators for the conditional density function and its square root, and their partial derivatives. Two measures of sensitivity to initial conditions in nonlinear stochastic dynamic systems are proposed, one of which relates Fisher information with initial-value sensitivity in dynamical systems. We propose estimators for these, and show asymptotic normality for one of them. We further propose a simple method for choosing the bandwidth. The methods are illustrated by simulation of two well-known models in dynamical systems.

Penalized likelihood methods are fundamental to ultrahigh dimensional variable selection. How high dimensionality such methods can handle remains largely unknown. In this paper, we show that in the context of generalized linear models, such methods possess model selection consistency with oracle properties even for dimensionality of nonpolynomial (NP) order of sample size, for a class of penalized likelihood approaches using folded-concave penalty functions, which were introduced to ameliorate the bias problems of convex penalty functions. This fills a long-standing gap in the literature where the dimensionality is allowed to grow slowly with the sample size. Our results are also applicable to penalized likelihood with the <i>L</i> ₁ -penalty, which is a convex function at the boundary of the class of folded-concave penalty functions under consideration. A method for exploring the structure of populations of complex objects, such as images, is considered. The objects are summarized by feature vectors. The statistical backbone is Principal Component Analysis in the space of feature vectors. Visual insights come from representing the results in the original data space. In an ophthalmological example, endemic outliers motivate the development of a bounded influence approach to PCA.

Variable selection in high-dimensional space characterizes many contemporary problems in scientific discovery and decision making. Many frequently-used techniques are based on independence screening; examples include correlation ranking (Fan &amp; Lv, 2008) or feature selection using a two-sample t-test in high-dimensional classification (Tibshirani et al., 2003). Within the context of the linear model, Fan &amp; Lv (2008) showed that this simple correlation ranking possesses a sure independence screening property under certain conditions and that its revision, called iteratively sure independent screening (ISIS), is needed when the features are marginally unrelated but jointly related to the response variable. In this paper, we extend ISIS, without explicit definition of residuals, to a general pseudo-likelihood framework, which includes generalized linear models as a special case. Even in the least-squares setting, the new method improves ISIS by allowing feature deletion in the iterative process. Our technique allows us to select important features in high-dimensional classification where the popularly used two-sample t-method fails. A new technique is introduced to reduce the false selection rate in the feature screening stage. Several simulated and two real data examples are presented to illustrate the methodology.

Recent proposals for implementation of kernel-based nonparametric curve estimators are seen to be faster than naive direct implementations by factors up into the hundreds. The main ideas behind the two different approaches are made clear. Careful speed comparisons in a variety of settings and using a variety of machines and software are done. Various issues on computational accuracy and stability are also discussed. Our speed tests show that the fast methods are as fast or somewhat faster than methods traditionally considered very fast, such as LOWESS and smoothing splines.

With modern technology, massive data can easily be collected in a form of multiple sets of curves. New statistical challenge includes testing whether there is any statistically significant difference among these sets of curves. In this article we propose some new tests for comparing two groups of curves based on the adaptive Neyman test and the wavelet thresholding techniques introduced earlier by Fan. We demonstrate that these tests inherit the properties outlined by Fan and that they are simple and powerful for detecting differences between two sets of curves. We then further generalize the idea to compare multiple sets of curves, resulting in an adaptive high-dimensional analysis of variance, called HANOVA. Varyingcoefficient linear models arise from multivariate nonparametric regression, nonlinear time series modelling and forecasting, functional data analysis, longitudinal data analysis and others. It has been a common practice to assume that the varying coefficients are functions of a given variable, which is often called an <i>index</i>. To enlarge the modelling capacity substantially, this paper explores a class of varyingcoefficient linear models in which the index is unknown and is estimated as a linear combination of regressors and/or other variables. We search for the index such that the derived varyingcoefficient model provides the least squares approximation to the underlying unknown multidimensional regression function. The search is implemented through a newly proposed hybrid backfitting algorithm. The core of the algorithm is the alternating iteration between estimating the index through a onestep scheme

Improving efficiency for regression coefficients and predicting trajectories of individuals are two important aspects in the analysis of longitudinal data. Both involve estimation of the covariance function. Yet challenges arise in estimating the covariance function of longitudinal data collected at irregular time points. A class of semiparametric models for the covariance function by that imposes a parametric correlation structure while allowing a nonparametric variance function is proposed. A kernel estimator for estimating the nonparametric variance function is developed. Two methods for estimating parameters in the correlation structurea quasi-likelihood approach and a minimum generalized variance methodare proposed.
