The effect of spin-involved interaction on the transport properties of disordered two-dimensional electron systems with ferromagnetic contacts is described using a two-component model. Components representing spin-up and spin-down states are supposed to be coupled at a discrete set of points. We have found that due to the additional interference arising in two-component systems the difference between conductances for the parallel and antiparallel orientations of the contact magnetization changes its sign as a function of the length of the conducting channel.

We investigate a charged two-dimensional particle in a homogeneous magnetic field interacting with a periodic array of point obstacles. We show that while Landau levels remain to be infinitely degenerate eigenvalues, between them the system has bands of absolutely continuous spectrum and exhibits thus a transport along the array. We also compute the band functions and the corresponding probability current.

We consider an electron with an anomalous magnetic moment g> 2 confined to a plane and interacting with a non-zero magnetic field B perpendicular to the plane. We show that if B has compact support and the magnetic flux in natural units is, the corresponding Pauli Hamiltonian has at least bound states, without making any assumptions about the field profile. Furthermore, in the zero-flux case there is a pair of bound states with opposite spin orientations. Using a Birman-Schwinger technique, we extend the last claim to a weak rotationally symmetric field with, thus correcting a recent result. Finally, we show that under mild regularity assumptions existence of the bound states can also be proved for non-symmetric fields with tails.

This is the first of a series of papers in which we treat in detail a simple non-relativistic model of a spinless particle decaying into two lighter particles, which is similar to the Lee-model description of V-particle decay. Galilean covariance is formulated properly by means of a unitary projective representation acting on the state space of the model.

We consider resonant vortices around nodal points of the wave function describing electron transport through a mesoscopic device. With a suitable choice of the device geometry, the dominating role is played by single vortices with a preferred orientation. To characterize the strength of the resulting magnetic moment, we have introduced a magnetance, the quantity defined in analogy with the device conductance. Its basic properties and possible experimental detection are discussed.

To describe quantum oscillations on metallic rings and similar effects, some authors introduced recently an ideal device which splits the electron wavefunction at the junction of three wires. A proper quantum-mechanical treatment requires, however, that the splitting procedure is described by a hamiltonian. In this Letter we show how this can be achieved in the framework of the self-adjoint-extension theory.

We discuss a pair of isoperimetric problems which at a glance seem to be unrelated. The first one is classical: one places N identical point charges at a closed curve T at the same arc-length distances and asks about the energy minimum, ie which shape does the loop take if left by itself. We discuss a ring-shaped soft quantum wire modelled by interaction supported by the ring with a generally nonconstant coupling strength. We derive the condition which determines the discrete spectrum of such systems, and analyse the dependence of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions on the coupling and ring geometry. In particular, we illustrate that a random component in the coupling leads to a localization. The discrete spectrum is also investigated in the situation when the ring is placed into a homogeneous magnetic field or threaded by an AharonovBohm flux and the system exhibits persistent currents.

We study spectral properties of a spinless quantum particle confined to an infinite planar layer with hard walls, which interacts with a periodic lattice of point perturbations and a homogeneous magnetic field perpendicular to the layer. It is supposed that the lattice cell contains a finite number of impurities and the flux through the cell is rational. Using the Landau-Zak transformation, we convert the problem into investigation of the corresponding fiber operators which is performed by means of Krein's formula. This yields an explicit description of the spectral bands, which may be absolutely continuous or degenerate, depending on the parameters of the model.

We study a charged two-dimensional particle confined to a straight parabolic-potential channel and exposed to a homogeneous magnetic field under the influence of a potential perturbation W. If W is bounded and periodic along the channel, a perturbative argument yields the absolute continuity of the bottom of the spectrum. We show that it can have any finite number of open gaps provided that the confining potential is sufficiently strong. However, if W depends on the periodic variable only, we prove by the Thomas argument that the whole spectrum is absolutely continuous, irrespective of the size of the perturbation. On the other hand, if W is small and satisfies a weak localization condition in the the longitudinal direction, we prove by the Mourre method that a part of the absolutely continuous spectrum persists.
