We develop a new phase space method for reconstructing the index of refraction of a medium from travel time measurements. The method is based on the so-called StefanovUhlmann identity which links two Riemannian metrics with their travel time information. We design a numerical algorithm to solve the resulting inverse problem. The new algorithm is a hybrid approach that combines both Lagrangian and Eulerian formulations. In particular the Lagrangian formulation in phase space can take into account multiple arrival times naturally, while the Eulerian formulation for the index of refraction allows us to compute the solution in physical space. Numerical examples including isotropic metrics and the Marmousi synthetic model are shown to validate the new method.

This paper presents a novel mass-conservative mixed multiscale method for solving flow equations in heterogeneous porous media. The media properties (the permeability) contain multiple scales and high contrast. The proposed method solves the flow equation in a mixed formulation on a coarse grid by constructing multiscale basis functions. The resulting velocity field is mass-conservative on the fine grid. Our main goal is to obtain first-order convergence in terms of the mesh size which is independent of local contrast. This is achieved, first, by constructing some auxiliary spaces, which contain global information that cannot be localized, in general. This is built on our previous work on the generalized multiscale finite element method (GMsFEM). In this work, we present an upscaled model for mixed dimensional coupled flow problem in fractured porous media. We consider both embedded and discrete fracture models (EFM and DFM) as fine scale models which contain coupled system of equations. For fine grid discretization, we use a conservative finite-volume approximation. We construct an upscaled model using the non-local multicontinuum (NLMC) method for the coupled system. The proposed upscaled model is based on a set of simplified multiscale basis functions for the auxiliary space and a constraint energy minimization principle for the construction of multiscale basis functions. Using the constructed NLMC-multiscale basis functions, we obtain an accurate coarse grid upscaled model. We present numerical results for both fine-grid models and upscaled coarse-grid models using our NLMC method. We consider model problems with (1) discrete fracture fine grid model with low and high permeable fractures;(2) embedded fine grid model for two types of geometries with differnet fracture networks and (3) embedded fracture fine grid model with heterogeneous permeability. The simulations using the upscaled model provide very accurate solutions with significant reduction in the dimension of the problem.

In this paper, we consider local multiscale model reduction for problems with multiple scales in space and time. We developed our approaches within the framework of the Generalized Multiscale Finite Element Method (GMsFEM) using spacetime coarse cells. The main idea of GMsFEM is to construct a local snapshot space and a local spectral decomposition in the snapshot space. Previous research in developing multiscale spaces within GMsFEM focused on constructing multiscale spaces and relevant ingredients in space only. In this paper, our main objective is to develop a multiscale model reduction framework within GMsFEM that uses spacetime coarse cells. We construct spacetime snapshot and offline spaces. In this paper, a class of FETI-DP preconditioners is developed for a fast solution of the linear system arising from staggered discontinuous Galerkin discretization of the two-dimensional Stokes equations. The discretization has been recently developed and has the distinctive advantages that it is optimally convergent and has a good local conservation property. In order to efficiently solve the linear system, two kinds of FETI-DP preconditioners, namely, lumped and Dirichlet preconditioners, are considered and analyzed. Scalable bounds C (H/h) and C (1+ log (H/h)) 2 are proved for the lumped and Dirichlet preconditioners, respectively, with the constant C depending on the infsup constant of the discrete spaces but independent of any mesh parameters. Here H/h stands for the number of elements across each subdomain. Numerical results are presented to confirm the theoretical estimates.

In this paper, we develop an adaptive generalized multiscale discontinuous Galerkin method (GMsDGM) for a class of high-contrast flow problems and derive a priori and a posteriori error estimates for the method. Based on the a posteriori error estimator, we develop an adaptive enrichment algorithm for our GMsDGM and prove its convergence. The adaptive enrichment algorithm gives an automatic way to enrich the approximation space in regions where the solution requires more basis functions, which are shown to perform well compared with a uniform enrichment. We also discuss an approach that adaptively selects multiscale basis functions by correlating the residual to multiscale basis functions (cf. [S. S. Chen, D. L. Donoho, and M. A. Saunders, <i>SIAM Rev.</i>, 43 (2001), pp. 129--159]). The proposed error indicators are L_2-based and can be inexpensively computed, which makes our approach efficient

We consider a strongly heterogeneous medium saturated by an incompressible viscous fluid as it appears in geomechanical modeling. This poroelasticity problem suffers from rapidly oscillating material parameters, which calls for a thorough numerical treatment. In this paper, we propose a method based on the local orthogonal decomposition technique and motivated by a similar approach used for linear thermoelasticity. Therein, local corrector problems are constructed in line with the static equations, whereas we propose to consider the full system. This allows to benefit from the given saddle point structure and results in two decoupled corrector problems for the displacement and the pressure. We prove the optimal first-order convergence of this method and verify the result by numerical experiments.

In this paper, we consider the numerical approximation of the three-dimensional poroelastic wave equations in the spherical coordinate system. One difficulty in the design of an efficient numerical scheme is that the problem is singular in the center and the polar axes of the computational domain. Nevertheless, we develop a hybrid finite difference/control volume method for solving this problem. Our method is explicit and is second order accurate in both space and time. Numerical results are shown to confirm the convergence rate of our method and the effectiveness to simulate wave propagation in poroelastic media in the spherical coordinate system.

The eigenvalues and eigenspaces of some discrete div- and curl-related operators are investigated. The discrete operators give some good discrete analogues of the continuous counterparts and play an important role in developing finite volume schemes for solving div-curl equations and electromagnetic systems. Knowledge of the eigenvalues and eigenspaces is very useful in the numerical analysis of finite volume methods for electromagetic systems in <i>nonhomogeneous</i> media.
