We prove the existence of multidimensional traveling-wave solutions to the scalar equation for the transport of solutes (contaminants) with nonlinear adsorption and spatially periodic convection-diffusion-adsorption coefficients under the assumption that the nonlinear adsorption function satisfies the Lax and Oleinik entropy conditions. In the nondegenerate case, we also prove the uniqueness of the traveling waves. These traveling waves are analogues of viscous shock profiles. They propagate with effective speeds that depend on the periodic porous media only up to their mean states, and are given by an averaged Rankine-Hugoniot relation. This is a direct consequence of the fact that the transport equation is in conservation form. The dynamic stability of vortex solutions to the Ginzburg-Landau and nonlinear Schrdinger equations is the basic assumption of the asymptotic particle plus field description of interacting vortices. For the Ginzburg-Landau dynamics we prove that all vortices are asymptotically nonlinearly stable relative to small radial perturbations. Initially finite energy perturbations of vortices decay to zero in<i>L</i> ^<i>p</i>(²) spaces with an algebraic rate as time tends to infinity. We also prove that under general (nonradial) perturbations, the plus and minus one-vortices are linearly dynamically stable in<i>L</i> ²; the linearized operator has spectrum equal to (, 0] and generates a<i>C</i> ₀ semigroup of contractions on<i>L</i> ²(²). The nature of the zero energy point is clarified; it is<i>resonance</i>, a property related to the infinite energy of planar vortices. A nonlinear, nonlocal cochlear model of the transmission line type is studied in order to capture the multitone interactions and resulting tonal suppression effects. The model can serve as a module for voice signal processing, and is a one-dimensional (in space) damped dispersive nonlinear PDE based on the mechanics and phenomenology of hearing. It describes the motion of the basilar membrane (BM0 in the cochlea driven by input pressure waves. Both elastic dampling and selective longitudinal fluid damping are present. The forner is nonlinear and nonlocal in BM displacement, and plays a kep role in capturing tonal interactions. The latter is active only near the exit boundary (helicotrema), and is built in to damp out the remaining long waves. A time domain blind source separation algorithm of convolutive sound mixtures is studied based on a compact partial inversion formula in closed form. An L1-constrained minimization problem is formulated to find demixing filter coefficients for source separation while capturing scaling invariance and sparseness of solutions. The minimization aims to reduce (lagged) cross correlations of the mixture signals, which are modeled stochastically. The problem is non-convex, however it is put in a nonlinear least squares form where the robust and convergent Levenberg-Marquardt iterative method is applicable to compute local minimizers. Efficiency is achieved in recovering lower dimensional demixing filter solutions than the physical ones. Computations on recorded and synthetic mixtures show satisfactory performance, and are compared with other iterative methods.

We consider a one-dimensional model biodegradation system consisting of two reactionadvection equations for nutrient and pollutant concentrations and a rate equation for biomass. The hydrodynamic dispersion is ignored. Under an explicit condition on the decay and growth rates of biomass, the system can be approximated by two component models by setting biomass kinetics to equilibrium. We derive closed form solutions for constant speed traveling fronts for the reduced two component models and compare their profiles in homogeneous media. For a spatially random velocity field, we introduce travel time and study statistics of degradation fronts via representations in terms of the travel time probability density function (<i>pdf</i>) and the traveling front profiles. We study the front dynamics of solutions of the initial value problem of the Burgers equation with initial data being the viscous shock front plus the white noise perturbation. In the sense of distribution, the solutions propagate with the same speed as the unperturbed front, however, the front location is random and satisfies a central limit theorem with the variance proportional to the time<i>t</i>, as<i>t</i> goes to infinity. With probability arbitrarily close to one, the front width is<i>O</i>(1) for large time.

We study the super-resolution (SR) problem of recovering point sources consisting of a collection of isolated and suitably separated spikes from only the low frequency measurements. If the peak separation is above a factor in (1,2) of the Rayleigh length (physical resolution limit), L 1 minimization is guaranteed to recover such sparse signals. However, below such critical length scale, especially the Rayleigh length, the L 1 certificate no longer exists. We show several local properties (local minimum, directional stationarity, and sparsity) of the limit points of minimizing two L 1 based nonconvex penalties, the difference of L 1 and L 1 norms ( L 1 ) and capped L 1 (C L 1 ), subject to the measurement constraints. We study an efficient dynamic blind source separation algorithm of convolutive sound mixtures based on updating statistical information in the frequency domain, and minimizing the support of time domain demixing filters by a weighted least square method. The permutation and scaling indeterminacies of separation, and concatenations of signals in adjacent time frames are resolved with optimization of l 1 l norm on cross-correlation coefficients at multiple time lags. The algorithm is a direct method without iterations, and is adaptive to the environment. Computations on recorded benchmark mixtures of speech and music signals show excellent performance. The method in general separates a foreground source from a background of sounds as often encountered in realistic situations.

The shape stability of the reaction interface for reactive flow in a layered porous medium is studied. This is done using a complete linearized stability analysis in the setting of a free boundary model of this phenomenon. The spectrum of the linearized problem is obtained in the general case, and it is compared with that obtained for homogeneous media in two typical cases.
