The zero dissipation limit of the compressible heat-conducting NavierStokes equations in the presence of the shock is investigated. It is shown that when the heat conduction coefficient and the viscosity coefficient satisfy = O (), = O (), c> 0, as 0 (see (1.3)), if the solution of the corresponding Euler equations is piecewise smooth with shock wave satisfying the Lax entropy condition, then there exists a smooth solution to the NavierStokes equations, which converges to the piecewise smooth shock solution of the Euler equations away from the shock discontinuity at a rate of . The proof is given by a combination of the energy estimates and the matched asymptotic analysis introduced in [3].

We study a biodegradation model for the time evolution of concentrations of contaminant, nutrient, and bacteria. The bacteria has a natural concentration which will increase when the nutrient reaches the substrate (contaminant). The growth utilizes nutrients and degrades the substrate. Eventually, such a process removes all the substrate and can be described by traveling wave solutions. The model consists of advection-reaction-diffusion equations for the substrate and nutrient concentrations and a rate equation (ODE) for the bacteria concentration. We first show the existence of approximate traveling wave solutions to an elliptically regularized system posed on a finite domain using degree theory and the elliptic maximum principle. Variational principle of Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piskunov (KPP) minimal front speeds provides a fast and accurate way for speed calculations. A variational principle based computation is carried out on a large ensemble of KPP random speeds through spatial, mean zero, stationary, Gaussian random shear flows inside two dimensional channel domains. In the regime of small root mean square (rms) shear amplitude, the enhancement of the ensemble averaged KPP front speed obeys the quadratic law. In the large rms amplitude regime, the enhancement follows the linear law. An asymptotic ensemble averaged speed formula is derived and agrees well with the numerics. Related theoretical results are presented with a brief outline of the ideas in the proofs. In this paper, we introduce a new Glimm functional for general systems of hyperbolic conservation laws. This new functional is consistent with the classical Glimm functional for the case when each characteristic field is either genuinely nonlinear or linearly degenerate, so that it can be viewed as optimal in some sense. With this new functional, the consistency of the Glimm scheme is proved clearly for general systems. Moreover, the convergence rate of the Glimm scheme is shown to be the same as the one obtained in Bressan, Marson (Arch Ration Mech Anal 142(2):155176, 1998) for systems with each characteristic field being genuinely nonlinear or linearly degenerate.

In this paper, we study the strong convergence of a sequence of uniform<i>L^p</i>_loc(<b>R</b><b>R</b>⁺) bounded approximate solutions {<i>u</i>(<i>x</i>,<i>t</i>)} to the following scalar conservation laws[formula]with initial data[formula]Without the convexity assumption and growth condition at infinity for<i>f</i>(<i>x</i>,<i>t</i>,<i>u</i>), we prove strong convergence of a subsequence of {<i>u</i>(<i>x</i>,<i>t</i>)}. Under a more general growth condition than those in the previous work, we prove the existence of weak solution for the equation. The result obtained here generalizes those in earlier work. Some applications of the results are also given at the end of this paper.
