Diffusion-generated motion by mean curvature is a simple algorithm for producing motion by mean curvature of a surface, in which the motion is generated by alternately diffusing and renormalizing a characteristic function. In this paper, we generalize diffusion-generated motion to a procedure that can be applied to the curvature motion of filaments, i.e., curves in <i>R</i> ^3, that may initially consist of a complex configuration of links. The method consists of applying diffusion to a complex-valued function whose values wind around the filament, followed by normalization. We motivate this approach by considering the essential features of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, which is a reaction-diffusion PDE that describes the formation and propagation of filamentary structures. In this paper, the L p convergence rates of planar diffusion waves for multi-dimensional Euler equations with damping are considered. The analysis relies on a newly introduced frequency decomposition and Green function based energy method. It is a combination of the L p estimate on the low frequency component by using an approximate Green function and L 2 estimate on the high frequency component through the energy method. By noticing that the low frequency component in the approximate Green function has the algebraic decay which governs the large time behavior, while the high frequency component has the exponential decay but with singularity, their combination leads to a global algebraic decay estimate. We study the critical and super-critical dissipative quasi-geostrophic equations in $\bR^ 2$ or $\bT^ 2$. Higher regularity of mild solutions with arbitrary initial data in H^{2-} is proved. As a corollary, we obtain a global existence result for the critical 2D quasi-geostrophic equations with periodic H^{2-} data. Some decay in time estimates are also provided.

Variational principle of Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piskunov (KPP) minimal front speeds provides a fast and accurate way for speed calculations. A variational principle based computation is carried out on a large ensemble of KPP random speeds through spatial, mean zero, stationary, Gaussian random shear flows inside two dimensional channel domains. In the regime of small root mean square (rms) shear amplitude, the enhancement of the ensemble averaged KPP front speed obeys the quadratic law. In the large rms amplitude regime, the enhancement follows the linear law. An asymptotic ensemble averaged speed formula is derived and agrees well with the numerics. Related theoretical results are presented with a brief outline of the ideas in the proofs.
