In this paper we develop methods to extend the minimal hypersurface approach to positive scalar curvature problems to all dimensions. This includes a proof of the positive mass theorem in all dimensions without a spin assumption. It also includes statements about the structure of compact manifolds of positive scalar curvature extending the work of\cite {sy1} to all dimensions. The technical work in this paper is to construct minimal slicings and associated weight functions in the presence of small singular sets and to show that the singular sets do not become too large in the lower dimensional slices. It is shown that the singular set in any slice is a closed set with Hausdorff codimension at least three. In particular for arguments which involve slicing down to dimension 1 or 1 the method is successful. The arguments can be viewed as an extension of the minimal hypersurface regularity theory to this setting of minimal slicings.

For a toric Calabi-Yau (CY) orbifold X whose underlying toric variety is semi-projective, we construct and study a non-toric Lagrangian torus fibration on X, which we call the Gross fibration. We apply the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow (SYZ) recipe to the Gross fibration of X to construct its mirror with the instanton corrections coming from genus 0 open orbifold Gromov-Witten (GW) invariants, which are virtual counts of holomorphic orbi-disks in X bounded by fibers of the Gross fibration. We explicitly evaluate all these invariants by first proving an open/closed equality and then employing the toric mirror theorem for suitable toric (parital) compactifications of X. Our calculations are then applied to (1) prove a conjecture of Gross-Siebert on a relation between genus 0 open orbifold GW invariants and mirror maps of X – this is called the open mirror theorem, which leads to an enumerative meaning of mirror maps, and (2) demonstrate how open (orbifold) GW invariants for toric CY orbifolds change under toric crepant resolutions – an open analogue of Ruan’s crepant resolution conjecture.

There have been many attempts to define quasilocal energy/mass for a spacelike 2-surface in a spacetime by the Hamilton–Jacobi method. The main difficulty in this approach is the subtle choice of the background configuration to be subtracted from the physical Hamiltonian. Quasilocal mass should be positive for general surfaces, but on the other hand should be zero for surfaces in the flat spacetime. In this paper, we survey the work in a series of papers [6, 25–27] in which a new notion of quasilocal mass/energy–momentum is proposed and investigated. In particular, the notion of energy observed by a 'quasilocal observer' will be discussed.

Given a smooth polarized Riemann surface (X, L) endowed with a hyperbolic metric \omega with cusp singularities along a divisor D, we show the L^ 2 projective embedding of (X, D) defined by L^ k is asymptotically almost balanced in a weighted sense. The proof depends on sufficiently precise understanding of the behavior of the Bergman kernel in three regions, with the most crucial one being the neck region around D. This is the first step towards understanding the algebro-geometric stability of extremal Khler metrics with singularities.
