Let $f : \sum_1 \to \sum_2$ be an area preserving diffeomorphism between compact Riemann surfaces of constant curvature. The graph of $f$ can be viewed as a Lagrangian submanifold in $ \sum_1 \times \sum_2$. This article discusses a canonical way to deform $f$ along area preserving diffeomorphisms. This deformation process is realized through the mean curvature flow of the graph of $f$ in $ \sum_1 \times \sum_2$. It is proved that the flow exists for all time and the map converges to a canonical map. In particular, this gives a new proof of the classical topological results that $O(3)$ is a deformation retract of the diffeomorphism group of $S^2$ and the mapping class group of a Riemman surface of positive genus is a deformation retract of the diffeomorphism group .

Given a compact orientable surface, we determine a complete set of relations for a function defined on the set of all homotopy classes of simple loops to be a geometric intersection number function. As a consequence, Thurston’s space of measured laminations and Thurston’s compactification of the Teichm¨uller space are described by a set of explicit equations. These equations are polynomials in the max-plus semi-ring structure on the real numbers. It shows that Thurston’s theory of measured laminations is within the domain of tropical geometry.

This paper uses Morse-theoretic techniques to compute the equivariant Betti numbers of the space of semistable rank two degree zero Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface, a method in the spirit of Atiyah and Bott’s original approach for semistable holomorphic bundles. This leads to a natural proof that the hyperk¨ahler Kirwan map is surjective for the non-fixed determinant case.

In this paper, we proved the mass angular momentum inequality\cite{D1}\cite{ChrusLiWe}\cite{SZ} for axisymmetric, asymptotically flat, vacuum constraint data sets with small trace. Given an initial data set with small trace, we construct a boost evolution spacetime of the Einstein vacuum equations as \cite{ChOM}. Then a perturbation method is used to solve the maximal surface equation in the spacetime under certain growing condition at infinity. When the initial data set is axisymmetric, we get an axisymmetric maximal graph with the same ADM mass and angular momentum as the given data. The inequality follows from the known results\cite{D1}\cite{ChrusLiWe}\cite{SZ} about the maximal graph.

We give a complete diffeomorphism classification of 1-connected closed manifolds M with integral homology H¤(M) ∼= Z ⊕ Z ⊕ Z, provided that dim(M) 6= 4.
