For stratified Mukai flops of type An,k,D2k+1 and E6,I , it is shown that the fiber product induces isomorphisms on Chow motives. In contrast to (standard) Mukai flops, the cup product is generally not preserved. For An,2, D5 and E6,I flops, quantum corrections are found through degeneration/deformation to ordinary flops.

The weak mean curvature is lower semicontinuous under weak convergence of varifolds, that is, if ¹k ! ¹ weakly as varifolds then k ~H¹ kLp(¹)· lim infk!1 k ~H¹k kLp(¹k). In contrast, if Tk ! T weakly as integral currents, then ¹T may not have a locally bounded ¯rst variation even if k ~H¹Tk kL1(¹k) is bounded. In 1999, Luigi Ambrosio asked the question whether lower semi- continuity of the weak mean curvature is true when T is assumed to be smooth. This was proved in [AmMa03] for p > n = dim T in Rn+1 using results from [Sch04]. Here we prove this in any dimension and codimension down to the desired exponent p = 2. For p = n = 2, this corresponds to the Willmore functional. In a forthcoming joint work [RoSch06], main steps of the pre- sent article are used to prove a modi¯ed conjecture of De Giorgi that the sum of the area and the Willmore functional is the ¡-limit of a di®use Landau-Ginzburg approximation.

We consider two natural problems arising in geometry which are equivalent to the local solvability of specific equations of Monge- Amp`ere type. These two problems are: the local isometric embedding problem for two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, and the problem of locally prescribed Gaussian curvature for surfaces in R3. We prove a general local existence result for a large class of Monge-Amp`ere equations in the plane, and obtain as corollaries the existence of regular solutions to both problems, in the case that the Gaussian curvature vanishes to arbitrary finite order on a single smooth curve.

We prove that a constrained Willmore immersion of a 2–torus into the conformal 4–sphere S4 is of “finite type”, that is, has a spectral curve of finite genus, or of “holomorphic type” which means that it is super conformal or Euclidean minimal with planar ends in R4 = S4\{1} for some point 1 2 S4 at infinity. This implies that all constrained Willmore tori in S4 can be constructed rather explicitly by methods of complex algebraic geometry. The proof uses quaternionic holomorphic geometry in combination with integrable systems methods similar to those of Hitchin’s approach [19] to the study of harmonic tori in S3.
