A discrete conformality for hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces is introduced in this paper. This discrete conformality is shown to be computable. It is proved that each hyperbolic polyhedral metric on a closed surface is discrete conformal to a unique hyperbolic polyhedral metric with a given discrete curvature satisfying Gauss-Bonnet formula. Furthermore, the hyperbolic polyhedral metric with given curvature can be obtained using a discrete Yamabe flow with surgery. In particular, each hyperbolic polyhedral metric on a closed surface with negative Euler characteristic is discrete conformal to a unique hyperbolic metric.

We discuss the concepts of energy and mass in relativity. On a finitely extended spatial region, they lead to the notion of quasilocal energy/mass for the boundary 2-surface in spacetime. A new definition was found in [27] that satisfies the positivity, rigidity, and asymptotics properties. The definition makes use of the surface Hamiltonian term which arises from Hamilton-Jacobi analysis of the gravitation action. The reference surface Hamiltonian is associated with an isometric embedding of the 2-surface into the Minkowski space. We discuss this new definition of mass as well as the reference surface Hamiltonian. Most of the discussion is based on joint work with PoNing Chen and Shing-Tung Yau.

Suppose A and B are normed division algebras, i.e. R,C,H or O, we introduce and study Grassmannians of linear subspaces in (A ⊗ B)n which are complex/Lagrangian/maximal isotropic with respect to natural two tensors on (A ⊗ B)n. We show that every irreducible compact symmetric space must be one of these Grassmannian spaces, possibly up to a finite cover. This gives a simple and uniform description of all compact symmetric spaces. This generalizes the Tits magic square description for simple Lie algebras to compact symmetric spaces.

We show that any embedded minimal torus in$S$^{3}is congruent to the Clifford torus. This answers a question posed by H. B. Lawson, Jr., in 1970.

Let g(t) be a smooth complete solution to the Ricci flow on a noncompact manifold such that g(0) is Kahler. We prove that if |Rm(g(t))| is bounded by a/t for some a > 0, then g(t) is Kahler for t > 0. We prove that there is a constant a(n) > 0 depending only on n such that the following is true: Suppose g(t) is a smooth complete solution to the Kahler-Ricci flow on a non-compact n-dimensional complex manifold such that g(0) has nonnegative holomorphic bisectional curvature and |Rm(g(t))| ≤ a(n)/t, then g(t) has nonnegative holomorphic bisectional curvature for t > 0. These generalize the results by Wan-Xiong Shi. As applications, we prove that (i) any complete noncompact Kahler manifold with nonnegative complex sectional curvature and maximum volume growth is biholomorphic to C^n; and (ii) there is ε(n) > 0 depending only on n such that if (M^n,g_0) is a complete noncompact Kahler manifold of complex dimension n with nonnegative holomorphic bisectional curvature and maximum volume growth and if (1+ε(n))^{−1}h ≤ g_0 ≤ (1+ε(n))h for some Riemannian metric h with bounded curvature, then M is biholomorphic to C^n.
