Let X CPN be a smooth subvariety. We study a flow, called balancing flow, on the space of projectively equivalent embeddings of X which attempts to deform the given embedding into a balanced one. If L X is an ample line bundle, considering embeddings via H0(Lk) gives a sequence of balancing flows. We prove that, provided these flows are started at appropriate points, they converge to Calabi flow for as long as it exists. This result is the parabolic analogue of Donaldsons theorem relating balanced embeddings to metrics with constant scalar curvature [12]. In our proof we combine Donaldson乫s techniques with an asymptotic result of Liu and Ma [17] which, as we explain, describes the asymptotic behavior of the derivative of the map FS . In this paper, we classify n-dimensional (n ≥ 3) complete non-compact locally conformally flat gradient steady solitons. In particular, we prove that a complete noncompact nonflat locally conformally flat gradient steady Ricci soliton is, up to scaling, the Bryant soliton.

We propose a finite-dimensional variational principle on triangulated 3-manifolds so that its critical points are related to solutions to Thurston’s gluing equation and Haken’s normal surface equation. The action functional is the volume.

We give a natural filtration F on QH(G/B), which respects the quantum product structure. Its associated graded algebra GrF(QH(G/B)) is isomorphic to the tensor product of QH(G/P) and a corresponding graded algebra of QH(P/B) after localization. When the quantum parameter goes to zero, this specializes to the filtration on H(G/B) from the Leray spectral sequence associated to the fibration P/B ! G/B −! G/P.
