Almost all three dimensional manifolds admit canonical metrics with constant sectional curvature. In this paper we proposed a new algorithm pipeline to compute such canonical metrics for hyperbolic 3-manifolds with high genus boundary surfaces. The computation is based on the discrete curvature flow for 3-manifolds, where the metric is deformed in an angle-preserving fashion until the curvature becomes uniform inside the volume and vanishes on the boundary. We also proposed algorithms to visualize the canonical metric by realizing the volume in the hyperbolic space ³, both in single period and in multiple periods. The proposed methods could not only facilitate the theoretical study of 3-manifold topology and geometry using computers, but also have great potentials in volumetric parameterizations, 3D shape comparison, volumetric biomedical image analysis and etc.

Surface registration plays a fundamental role in many applications in computer vision and aims at finding a oneto-one correspondence between surfaces. Conformal mapping based surface registration methods conformally map 2D/3D surfaces onto 2D canonical domains and perform the matching on the 2D plane. This registration framework reduces dimensionality, and the result is intrinsic to Riemannian metric and invariant under isometric deformation. However, conformal mapping will be affected by inconsistent boundaries and non-isometric deformations of surfaces. In this work, we quantify the effects of boundary variation and non-isometric deformation to conformal mappings, and give the theoretical upper bounds for the distortions of conformal mappings under these two factors. Besides giving the thorough theoretical proofs of the theorems, we verified them by concrete experiments using 3D human facial scans with dynamic expressions and varying boundaries. Furthermore, we used the distortion estimates for reducing search range in feature matching of surface registration applications. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical predictions and also demonstrate the performance improvements in feature tracking.

Intrinsic curvature flows can be used to design Riemannian metrics by prescribed curvatures. This chapter presents three discrete curvature flow methods that are recently introduced into the engineering fields: the discrete Ricci flow and discrete Yamabe flow for surfaces with various topology, and the discrete curvature flow for hyperbolic 3-manifolds with boundaries. For each flow, we introduce its theories in both the smooth setting and the discrete setting, plus the numerical algorithms to compute it. We also provide a brief survey on their history and their link to some of the engineering applications in computer graphics, computer vision, medical imaging, computer aided design and others.

The problem is concerned about computing virtual coordinates for greedy routing in a wireless ad hoc network. Consider a set of wireless nodes S densely deployed inside a geometric domain R2. Nodes within communication range can directly communicate with each other. We ask whether one can compute a set of virtual coordinates for S such that greedy routing has guaranteed delivery. In particular, each node forwards the message to the neighbor whose distance to the destination, computed under the virtual coordinates and some metric function d, is the smallest. If such a neighbor can always be found, greedy routing successfully delivers the message to the destination. The problem can be phrased as finding a greedy embedding of S in some geometric space, such that greedy routing always succeeds. Systematically generalizing planar geometric algorithms to manifold domains is of fundamental importance in computer aided design field. This paper proposes a novel theoretic framework, <i>geometric structure</i>, to conquer this problem. In order to discover the intrinsic geometric structures of general surfaces, we developed a theoretic rigorous and practical efficient method, <i>Discrete Variational Ricci flow</i>.
