We study bounded ancient solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations. These are solutions with bounded velocity defined in$R$^{$n$}× (−1, 0). In two space dimensions we prove that such solutions are either constant or of the form$u$($x$,$t$) =$b$($t$), depending on the exact definition of admissible solutions. The general 3-dimensional problem seems to be out of reach of existing techniques, but partial results can be obtained in the case of axisymmetric solutions. We apply these results to some scenarios of potential singularity formation for axi-symmetric solutions, and obtain extensions of results in a recent paper by Chen, Strain, Tsai and Yau [4].

We introduce a notion of super-potential for positive closed currents of bidegree ($p$,$p$) on projective spaces. This gives a calculus on positive closed currents of arbitrary bidegree. We define in particular the intersection of such currents and the pull-back operator by meromorphic maps. One of the main tools is the introduction of structural discs in the space of positive closed currents which gives a “geometry” on that space. We apply the theory of super-potentials to construct Green currents for rational maps and to study equidistribution problems for holomorphic endomorphisms and for polynomial automorphisms.

We give a necessary and sufficient condition on the cost function so that the map solution of Monge’s optimal transportation problem is continuous for arbitrary smooth positive data. This condition was first introduced by Ma, Trudinger and Wang [24], [30] for a priori estimates of the corresponding Monge–Ampère equation. It is expressed by a socalled$cost-sectional curvature$being non-negative. We show that when the cost function is the squared distance of a Riemannian manifold, the cost-sectional curvature yields the sectional curvature. As a consequence, if the manifold does not have non-negative sectional curvature everywhere, the optimal transport map$cannot be continuous$for arbitrary smooth positive data. The non-negativity of the cost-sectional curvature is shown to be equivalent to the connectedness of the contact set between any cost-convex function (the proper generalization of a convex function) and any of its supporting functions. When the cost-sectional curvature is uniformly positive, we obtain that optimal maps are continuous or Hölder continuous under quite weak assumptions on the data, compared to what is needed in the Euclidean case. This case includes the quadratic cost on the round sphere.

The embedded cobordism category under study in this paper generalizes the category of conformal surfaces, introduced by G. Segal in [S2] in order to formalize the concept of field theories. Our main result identifies the homotopy type of the classifying space of the embedded$d$-dimensional cobordism category for all$d$. For$d$= 2, our results lead to a new proof of the generalized Mumford conjecture, somewhat different in spirit from the original one, presented in [MW].

We calculate the small quantum orbifold cohomology of arbitrary weighted projective spaces. We generalize Givental’s heuristic argument, which relates small quantum cohomology to$S$^{1}-equivariant Floer cohomology of loop space, to weighted projective spaces and use this to conjecture an explicit formula for the small$J$-function, a generating function for certain genus-zero Gromov–Witten invariants. We prove this conjecture using a method due to Bertram. This provides the first non-trivial example of a family of orbifolds of arbitrary dimension for which the small quantum orbifold cohomology is known. In addition we obtain formulas for the small$J$-functions of weighted projective complete intersections satisfying a combinatorial condition; this condition naturally singles out the class of orbifolds with terminal singularities.
