Surface-related-multiple wavefields constitute redundant information in conventional migration and can often be difficult to attenuate. However, when used for migration, multiple wavefields can improve subsurface illumination. Unfortunately, the process of imaging using multiples involves the management of crosstalk, which largely restricts its application. Crosstalk causes phantom images formed by spurious correlation of unrelated events in a migration process. These events can be unrelated orders of multiples in the source and receiver wavefields; they can also be one event associated with a reflector in the source wavefield and another event generated by a different reflector in the receiver wavefield. We have first examined crosstalk by explicitly investigating its generation mechanisms in a migration process and classifying it into different categories based on causality. Following this analysis, crosstalk can be predicted in a migration process and subtracted in the image domain; however, this method is usually difficult to apply due to the complexity of wavefield separation and adaptive subtraction. Furthermore, we develop different algorithms to attenuate the crosstalk, including a deconvolution imaging condition, a least-squares migration (LSM) method, and an advanced algorithm combining LSM with a deconvolution imaging condition. We evaluate these different strategies with synthetic examples. A deconvolution imaging condition can attenuate some crosstalk, but it is less effective at suppressing strong coherent crosstalk events. However, the LSM method can fundamentally address the crosstalk issue, and this approach is further optimized when combined with a deconvolution imaging condition.

Non-line-of-sight imaging aims at recovering obscured objects from multiple scattered lights. It has recently received widespread attention due to its potential applications, such as autonomous driving, rescue operations, and remote sensing. However, in cases with high measurement noise, obtaining high-quality reconstructions remains a challenging task. In this work, we establish a unified regularization framework, which can be tailored for different scenarios, including indoor and outdoor scenes with substantial background noise under both confocal and non-confocal settings. The proposed regularization framework incorporates sparseness and non-local self-similarity of the hidden objects as well as the smoothness of the signals. We show that the estimated signals, albedo, and surface normal of the hidden objects can be reconstructed robustly even with high measurement noise under the proposed framework. Reconstruction results on synthetic and experimental data show that our approach recovers the hidden objects faithfully and outperforms state-of-the-art reconstruction algorithms in terms of both quantitative criteria and visual quality.

Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging enables people to see a hidden scene based on multiple interaction information between the object and the carrier. There have been numerous studies focusing on the physical modeling of photon scattering, but few have explored the detection process, which also plays a vital role. In this paper, we put forward a novel, to the best of our knowledge, detection methodology for NLOS imaging based on time-sequential first photon (TSFP) data. We verify the method with both synthetic and experimental data, showing a dramatic reduction in acquisition time cost compared with traditional methods for the same reconstruction quality. This work may contribute to real-time and photon-starved NLOS imaging for practical applications.

Due to the intrinsic complexity and nonlinearity of chemical reactions, direct applications of traditional machine learning algorithms may face with many difficulties. In this study, through two concrete examples with biological background, we illustrate how the key ideas of multiscale modeling can help to reduce the computational cost of machine learning a lot, as well as how machine learning algorithms perform model reduction automatically in a time-scale separated system. Our study highlights the necessity and effectiveness of an integration of machine learning algorithms and multiscale modeling during the study of chemical reactions.

The Onsager's reciprocal relation plays a fundamental role in the nonequilibrium thermodynamics. However, unfortunately, its classical version is valid only within a narrow region near equilibrium due to the linear regression hypothesis, which largely restricts its usage. In this paper, based on the conservation-dissipation formalism, a generalized version of Onsager's relations for the master equations and Fokker-Planck equations was derived. Nonlinear constitutive relations with nonsymmetric and positively stable operators, which become symmetric under the detailed balance condition, constitute key features of this new generalization. Similar conclusions also hold for many other classical models in physics and chemistry, which in turn make the current study as a benchmark for the application of generalized Onsager's relations in nonequilibrium thermodynamics.
