We consider a two-dimensional particle of charge e interacting with a homogeneous magnetic field perpendicular to the plane and a potential well which is transported along a closed loop in the plane. We show that a bound state corresponding to a simple isolated eigenvalue acquires at that Berry's phase equal to 2 sgn e times the number of flux quanta through the oriented area encircled by the loop. We also argue that this is a purely quantum effect since the corresponding Hannay angle is zero.

In this paper, we study gravitational instantons (i.e., complete hyperkähler 4‑manifolds with faster than quadratic curvature decay). We prove three main theorems: (1) Any gravitational instanton must have one of the following known ends: ALE, ALF, ALG, and ALH. (2) In the ALG and ALH non-splitting cases, it must be biholomorphic to a compact complex elliptic surface minus a divisor. Thus, we confirm a long-standing question of Yau in the ALG and ALH cases. (3) In the ALF‑D_k case, it must have an O(4)‑multiplet.

We consider rectangular graph superlattices of sides l 1, l 2 with the wave-function coupling at the junctions either of the type, when they are continuous and the sum of their derivatives is proportional to the common value at the junction with a coupling constant , or the s type with the roles of functions and derivatives reversed; the latter corresponds to the situations where the junctions are realized by complicated geometric scatterers. We show that the band spectra have a hidden fractal structure with respect to the ratio := l 1/l 2. If the latter is an irrational badly approximable by rationals, lattices have no gaps in the weak-coupling case. The paper is devoted to a model of a mesoscopic system consisting of a pair of parallel planar waveguides separated by an infinitely thin semitransparent boundary modeled by a transverse interaction. We develop the BirmanSchwinger theory for the corresponding generalized Schrdinger operator. The spectral properties become nontrivial if the barrier coupling is not invariant with respect to longitudinal translations, in particular, there are bound states if the barrier is locally more transparent in the mean and the coupling parameter reaches the same asymptotic value in both directions along the guide axis. We derive the weak-coupling expansion of the ground-state eigenvalue for the cases when the perturbation is small in the supremum and the <b>L</b>¹-norms. In this paper, we will develop a new staggered hybridization technique for discontinuous Galerkin methods to discretize linear elastodynamic equations. The idea of hybridization is used extensively in many discontinuous Galerkin methods, but the idea of staggered hybridization is new. Our new approach offers several advantages, namely energy conservation, high-order optimal convergence, preservation of symmetry for the stress tensor, block diagonal mass matrices as well as low dispersion error. The key idea is to use two staggered hybrid variables to enforce the continuity of the velocity and the continuity of the normal component of the stress tensor on a staggered mesh. We prove the stability and the convergence of the proposed scheme in both the semi-discrete and the fully-discrete settings. Numerical results confirm the optimal rate of convergence and show that the method has a superconvergent property for dispersion. Furthermore, an application of this method to Rayleigh wave propagation is presented.
