We study stable curves of arithmetic genus 2 which admit two morphisms of finite degree d, resp. (d,d′), onto smooth elliptic curves, with particular attention to the case d prime.

We associate a half-integer number, called the quantum index, to algebraic curves in the real plane satisfying to certain conditions. The area encompassed by the logarithmic image of such curves is equal to π2 times the quantum index of the curve, and thus has a discrete spectrum of values. We use the quantum index to refine enumeration of real rational curves in a way consistent with the Block–Göttsche invariants from tropical enumerative geometry.

In this paper, it is proved that the Hodge metric completion of the moduli space of polarized and marked Calabi-Yau manifolds, ie the Torelli space, is a complex affine manifold. As applications we prove that the period map from the Torelli space and the extended period map from its completion space, both are injective into the period domain, and that the completion space is a bounded domain of holomorphy with a complete Khler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we show that the period map from the moduli space of polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds with level m structure is also injective.

The motivation for this paper is the study of arithmetic properties of Shimura varieties, in particular the Newton stratification of the special fiber of a suitable integral model at a prime with parahoric level structure. This is closely related to the structure of RapoportZink spaces and of affine DeligneLusztig varieties. We prove a HodgeNewton decomposition for affine DeligneLusztig varieties and for the special fibers of RapoportZink spaces, relating these spaces to analogous ones defined in terms of Levi subgroups, under a certain condition (HodgeNewton decomposability) which can be phrased in combinatorial terms. Second, we study the Shimura varieties in which every non-basic\sigma-isogeny class is HodgeNewton decomposable. We show that (assuming the axioms of He and Rapoport in Manuscr. We analyze the asymptotic behavior of certain twisted orbital integrals arising from the study of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. The main tools include the Base Change Fundamental Lemma and q-analogues of the Kostant partition functions. As an application we prove a conjecture of Miaofen Chen and Xinwen Zhu, relating the set of irreducible components of an affine Deligne-Lusztig variety modulo the action of the σ-centralizer group to the Mirkovic-Vilonen basis of a certain weight space of a representation of the Langlands dual group.
