Let <i>M</i> be a compact Khler manifold and <i>N</i> be a subvariety with codimension greater than or equal to 2. We show that there are no complete KhlerEinstein metrics on M - N . As an application, let <i>E</i> be an exceptional divisor of <i>M</i>. Then M - N cannot admit any complete KhlerEinstein metric if blow-down of <i>E</i> is a complex variety with only canonical or terminal singularities. A similar result is shown for pairs.

In this article we propose a geometric description of Arthur packets for p-adic groups using vanishing cycles of perverse sheaves. Our approach is inspired by the 1992 book by Adams, Barbasch and Vogan on the Langlands classification of admissible representations of real groups and follows the direction indicated by Vogan in his 1993 paper on the Langlands correspondence. Using vanishing cycles, we introduce and study a functor from the category of equivariant perverse sheaves on the moduli space of certain Langlands parameters to local systems on the regular part of the conormal bundle for this variety. In this article we establish the main properties of this functor and show that it plays the role of microlocalization in the work of Adams, Barbasch and Vogan. We use this to define ABV-packets for pure rational forms of p-adic groups and propose a geometric description of the transfer coefficients that appear in Arthur's main local result in the endoscopic classification of representations. This article includes conjectures modelled on Vogan's work, especially the prediction that Arthur packets are ABV-packets for p-adic groups. We gather evidence for these conjectures by verifying them in numerous examples.

From the work of Lian, Liu, and Yau on" Mirror Principle", in the explicit computation of the Euler data Q=\{Q_0, Q_1,...\} for an equivariant concavex bundle Q=\{Q_0, Q_1,...\} over a toric manifold, there are two places the structure of the bundle comes into play:(1) the multiplicative characteric class Q=\{Q_0, Q_1,...\} of Q=\{Q_0, Q_1,...\} one starts with, and (2) the splitting type of Q=\{Q_0, Q_1,...\} . Equivariant bundles over a toric manifold has been classified by Kaneyama, using data related to the linearization of the toric action on the base toric manifold. In this article, we relate the splitting type of Q=\{Q_0, Q_1,...\} to the classifying data of Kaneyama. From these relations, we compute the splitting type of a couple of nonsplittable equivariant vector bundles over toric manifolds that may be of interest to string theory and mirror symmetry. A code in Mathematica that carries out the computation of some of these examples is attached.

We conjecture that appropriate K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of complex flag manifolds G/B are governed by finite-difference versions of Toda systems constructed in terms of the Langlands-dual quantized universal enveloping algebras U_q(g'). The conjecture is proved in the case of classical flag manifolds of the series A. The proof is based on a refinement of the famous Atiyah-Hirzebruch argument for rigidity of arithmetical genus applied to hyperquot-scheme compactifications of spaces of rational curves in the flag manifolds.

The motivation for this paper is the study of arithmetic properties of Shimura varieties, in particular the Newton stratification of the special fiber of a suitable integral model at a prime with parahoric level structure. This is closely related to the structure of RapoportZink spaces and of affine DeligneLusztig varieties. We prove a HodgeNewton decomposition for affine DeligneLusztig varieties and for the special fibers of RapoportZink spaces, relating these spaces to analogous ones defined in terms of Levi subgroups, under a certain condition (HodgeNewton decomposability) which can be phrased in combinatorial terms. Second, we study the Shimura varieties in which every non-basic\sigma-isogeny class is HodgeNewton decomposable. We show that (assuming the axioms of He and Rapoport in Manuscr.
