Corresponding to the Legendre ellipsoid and the LYZ ellipsoid, two new sine ellipsoids are introduced in this paper. These four ellipsoids are closely related in the Pythagorean relation and duality. Several volume inequalities and the valuation properties are obtained for two new ellipsoids.

Variable selection is vital to statistical data analyses. Many of procedures in use are ad hoc stepwise selection procedures, which are computationally expensiveandignore stochastic errors in the variable selection process of previous steps. An automatic and simultaneous variable selection procedure can be obtained by using a penalized likelihood method. In traditional linear models, the best subset selection and stepwise deletion methods coincide with a penalized leastsquares method when design matrices are orthonormal. In this paper, we propose a few new approaches to selecting variables for linear models, robust regression models and generalized linear models based on a penalized likelihood approach. A family of thresholding functions are proposed. The LASSO proposed by Tibshirani (1996) is a member of the penalized leastsquares with the # #-penalty. A smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) penalty function is introduced to ameliorate the properties of # #-penalty. A unied algorithm is introduced, which is backed up by statistical theory. The new approaches are compared with the ordinary leastsquares methods, the garrote method by Breiman (1995) and the LASSO method by Tibshirani (1996). Our simulation results show that the newly proposed methods compare favorably with other approaches as an automatic variable selection technique. Because of simultaneous selection of variables and estimation of parameters, we are able to give a simple estimated standard error formula, which is tested to be accurate enough for practical applications. In this paper, two explicit conversion formulae between triangular and rectangular Bézier patches are derived. Using the formulae, one triangular Bézier patch of degree n can be converted into one rectangular Bézier patch of degree $n \times n$. And one rectangular Bézier patch of degree m × n can be converted into two triangular Bézier patches of degree $m + n$ . Besides, two stable recursive algorithms corresponding to the two conversion formulae are given. Using the algorithms, when converting triangular Bézier patches to rectangular Bézier patches, we can computer the relations between the control points of the two types of patches for any $n\ge2$ based on the relationships for $n=1$. When converting rectangular Bézier patches to triangular Bézier patches, we can computer the relations between the control points of the two types of patches for any $m\ge 2, n \subset N^+ $ and $n \ge 2, m \subset N^+$ based on the relationships for $m=n=1$.

We state and prove a long-elusive relation between genus-one Gromov-Witten of a complete intersection and twisted Gromov Witten invariants of the ambient projective space. As shown in a previous paper, certain naturally arising cones of holomorphic vector bundle sections over the main component M 0 1,k(Pn, d) of the moduli space of stable genus-one holomorphic maps into Pn have a well-defined euler class. In this paper, we extend this result to moduli spaces of perturbed, in a restricted way, J-holomorphic maps. This extension is used to show that these cones are the correct genus-one analogues of the vector bundles relating genuszero Gromov-Witten invariants of a complete intersection to those of the ambient projective space. A relationship for higher-genus invariants is conjectured as well.
