In this paper, we analyze a free quantum particle in a straight Dirichlet waveguide which has at its axis two Dirichlet barriers of lengths separated by a window of length 2a. It is known that if the barriers are semi-infinite, i.e., we have two adjacent waveguides coupled laterally through the boundary window, the system has for any a > 0 a finite number of eigenvalues below the essential spectrum threshold. Here, we demonstrate that for large but finite the system has resonances which converge to the said eigenvalues as , and derive the leading term in the corresponding asymptotic expansion.

Motivated by the paper of Beals, Sattinger and Szmigielski (2000) [3], we propose an extension of the CamassaHolm equation, which also admits the multipeakon solutions. The novel aspect is that our approach is mainly based on classic determinant technique. Furthermore, the proposed equation is shown to possess a nonisospectral Lax pair.

We discuss the discrete spectrum induced by bulges on threadlike mesoscopic objects, using two models, a continuous hard-wall waveguide and a discrete tight-binding model with two sorts of atomic orbitals. We show that elongated bulges induce numerous quasibound states. In the discrete model we also evaluate the probability of transition between the localized states and extended ones of the valence band. We suggest this as a mechanism governing the porous-silicon luminescence. In addition, the model reproduces the dominance of nonradiative transitions, blueshift for finer textures, and luminiscence suppression at low temperatures.
