We consider rectangular graph superlattices of sides l 1, l 2 with the wave-function coupling at the junctions either of the type, when they are continuous and the sum of their derivatives is proportional to the common value at the junction with a coupling constant , or the s type with the roles of functions and derivatives reversed; the latter corresponds to the situations where the junctions are realized by complicated geometric scatterers. We show that the band spectra have a hidden fractal structure with respect to the ratio := l 1/l 2. If the latter is an irrational badly approximable by rationals, lattices have no gaps in the weak-coupling case. We show that there is a quantization for the asymptotic critical values of at which new gap series open, and explain it in terms of number-theoretic properties of . It is shown that there is an equivariant isotopy <i></i>_<i>t</i>, 0 <i>t</i> 1, from <i></i>₀ to a round circle <i></i>₁.

We consider finite difference schemes based on the impulse density variable. We show that the original velocity—impulse density formulation of Oseledets is marginally ill-posed for the inviscid flow, and this has the consequence that some ordinarily stable numerical methods in other formulations become unstable in the velocity—impulse density formulation. We present numerical evidence of this instability. We then discuss the construction of stable finite difference schemes by requiring that at the numerical level the nonlinear terms be convertible to similar terms in the primitive variable formulation. Finally we give a simplified velocity—impulse density formulation which is free of these complications and yet retains the nice features of the original velocity—impulse density formulation with regard to the treatment of boundary. We present numerical results on this simplified formulation for the driven cavity flow on both the staggered and non-staggered grids.

We analyse two-dimensional Schrdinger operators with the potential| xy| p (x 2+ y 2) p/(p+ 2) where p 1 and 0. We show that there is a critical value of such that the spectrum for &lt; crit is bounded below and purely discrete, while for &gt; crit it is unbounded from below. In the subcritical case, we prove upper and lower bounds for the eigenvalue sums.
