A basic, simple energy method for the Boltzmann equation is presented here. It is based on a new macromicro decomposition of the Boltzmann equation as well as the H-theorem. This allows us to make use of the ideas from hyperbolic conservation laws and viscous conservation laws to yield the direct energy method. As an illustration, we apply the method for the study of the time-asymptotic, nonlinear stability of the global Maxwellian states. Previous energy method, starting with Grad and finishing with Ukai, involves the spectral analysis and regularity of collision operator through sophisticated weighted norms.

We study free scalar field theory on a graph, which gives rise to a modified version of discrete Green’s function on a graph studied in [8]. We show that this gives rise to a graph invariant, which is closely related to the 2-dimensional Weisfeiler-Lehman algorithm for graph isomorphism testing. We then consider the same theory over the integers, which leads to the consideration of certain quadratic forms over the integers as initiated in [14], associated to the graphs. We show that the classical Cauchy problem for the incompressible 3d Navier-Stokes equations with (−1)-homogeneous initial data has a global scale-invariant solution which is smooth for positive times. Our main tech- nical tools are local-in-space regularity estimates near the initial time, which are of independent interest.
