Accurate simulation of seismic waves is of critical importance in a variety of geophysical applications. Based on recent works on staggered discontinuous Galerkin methods, we have developed a new method for the simulations of seismic waves, which has energy conservation and extremely low grid dispersion, so that it naturally provided accurate numerical simulations of wave propagation useful for geophysical applications and was a generalization of classical staggered-grid finite-difference methods. Moreover, it could handle with ease irregular surface topography and discontinuities in the subsurface models. Our new method discretized the velocity and the stress tensor on this staggered grid, with continuity imposed on different parts of the mesh. The numerical approximation of high-frequency wave propagation in inhomogeneous media is a challenging problem. In particular, computing high-frequency solutions by direct simulations requires several points per wavelength for stability and usually requires many points per wavelength for a satisfactory accuracy. In this paper, we propose a new method for the acoustic wave equation in inhomogeneous media in the time domain to achieve superior accuracy and stability without using a large number of unknowns. The method is based on a discontinuous Galerkin discretization together with carefully chosen basis functions. To obtain the basis functions, we use the idea from geometrical optics and construct the basis functions by using the leading order term in the asymptotic expansion. In the presence of vacuum, the physical entropy for polytropic gases behaves singularly and it is thus a challenge to study its dynamics. It is shown in this paper that the boundedness of the entropy can be propagated up to any finite time provided that the initial vacuum presents only at far fields with sufficiently slow decay of the initial density. More precisely, for the Cauchy problem of the onedimensional heat conductive compressible Navier--Stokes equations, the global well-posedness of strong solutions and uniform boundedness of the corresponding entropy are established, as long as the initial density vanishes only at far fields with a rate no more than $O(\frac{1}{x^2})$. The main tools of proving the uniform boundedness of the entropy are some singularly weighted energy estimates carefully designed for the heat conductive compressible Navier--Stokes equations and an elaborate De Giorgi type iteration technique for some classes of degenerate parabolic equations. The De Giorgi type iterations are carried out to different equations in establishing the lower and upper bounds of the entropy.

Kaimanovich (2003) [9] introduced the concept of augmented tree on the symbolic space of a selfsimilar set. It is hyperbolic in the sense of Gromov, and it was shown by Lau and Wang (2009) [12] that under the open set condition, a self-similar set can be identified with the hyperbolic boundary of the tree. In the paper, we investigate in detail a class of simple augmented trees and the Lipschitz equivalence of such trees. The main purpose is to use this to study the Lipschitz equivalence problem of the totally disconnected self-similar sets which has been undergoing some extensive development recently.
