We adopt a recent work in Chung, Qian, Uhlmann and Zhao (Inverse Problems, 23 (2007) 309-329) to develop a phase space method for reconstructing pressure wave speed and shear wave speed of an elastic medium from travel time measurements. The method is based on the so-called Stefanov-Uhlmann identity which links two Riemannian metrics with their travel time information. We design a numerical algorithm to solve the resulting inverse problem. The algorithm is a hybrid approach that combines both Lagrangian and Eulerian formulations. In particular the Lagrangian formulation in phase space can take into account multiple arrival times naturally, while the Eulerian formulation for wave speeds allows us to compute the solution in physical space. Numerical examples are shown to validate the method.

In this paper, we develop a mass conservative multiscale method for coupled flow and transport in heterogeneous porous media. We consider a coupled system consisting of a convection-dominated transport equation and a flow equation. We construct a coarse grid solver based on the Generalized Multiscale Finite Element Method (GMsFEM) for a coupled system. In particular, multiscale basis functions are constructed based on some snapshot spaces for the pressure and the concentration equations and some local spectral decompositions in the snapshot spaces. The resulting approach uses a few multiscale basis functions in each coarse block (for both the pressure and the concentration) to solve the coupled system. We use the mixed framework, which allows mass conservation. Our main contributions are:(1) the development of a mass conservative GMsFEM for the coupled flow and transport;(2) the development of a robust multiscale method for convection-dominated transport problems by choosing appropriate test and trial spaces within Petrov-Galerkin mixed formulation. We present numerical results and consider several heterogeneous permeability fields. The eigenvalues and eigenspaces of some discrete div- and curl-related operators are investigated. The discrete operators give some good discrete analogues of the continuous counterparts and play an important role in developing finite volume schemes for solving div-curl equations and electromagnetic systems. Knowledge of the eigenvalues and eigenspaces is very useful in the numerical analysis of finite volume methods for electromagetic systems in <i>nonhomogeneous</i> media.

In this paper, we consider the numerical approximation of the three-dimensional poroelastic wave equations in the spherical coordinate system. One difficulty in the design of an efficient numerical scheme is that the problem is singular in the center and the polar axes of the computational domain. Nevertheless, we develop a hybrid finite difference/control volume method for solving this problem. Our method is explicit and is second order accurate in both space and time. Numerical results are shown to confirm the convergence rate of our method and the effectiveness to simulate wave propagation in poroelastic media in the spherical coordinate system.

We consider a strongly heterogeneous medium saturated by an incompressible viscous fluid as it appears in geomechanical modeling. This poroelasticity problem suffers from rapidly oscillating material parameters, which calls for a thorough numerical treatment. In this paper, we propose a method based on the local orthogonal decomposition technique and motivated by a similar approach used for linear thermoelasticity. Therein, local corrector problems are constructed in line with the static equations, whereas we propose to consider the full system. This allows to benefit from the given saddle point structure and results in two decoupled corrector problems for the displacement and the pressure. We prove the optimal first-order convergence of this method and verify the result by numerical experiments.
