The mixed width-integrals of convex bodies are defined by E. Lutwak. In this paper, the mixed brightness-integrals of convex bodies are defined. An inequality is established for the mixed brightness-integrals analogous to the Fenchel-Aleksandrov inequality for the mixed volumes. An isoperimetric inequality (involving the mixed brightness-integrals) is presented which generalizes an inequality recently obtained by Chakerian and Heil. Strengthened version of this general inequality is obtained by introducing indexed mixed brightness-integrals.

Let (X, g) be a compact Riemannian manifold with quasi-positive Riemannian scalar curvature. If there exists a complex structure J compatible with g, then the Kodaira dimension of (X, J) is equal to −∞ and the canonical bundle KX is not pseudo-effective. We also introduce the complex Yamabe number λc(X) for compact complex manifold X, and show that if λ_c(X) is greater than 0, then κ(X) is equal to −∞; moreover, if X is also spin, then the Hirzebruch A-hat genus \hat{A}(X) is zero.

We study isometric Lie group actions on symmetric spaces admitting a section, i.e., a submanifold that meets all orbits orthogonally at every intersection point. We classify such actions on the compact symmetric spaces with simple isometry group and rank greater than one. In particular, we show that these actions are hyperpolar, i.e., the sections are flat.

Let S be a complex smooth projective surface and L be a line bundle on S. G¨ottsche conjectured that for every integer r, the number of r-nodal curves in |L| is a universal polynomial of four topological numbers when L is sufficiently ample. We prove G¨ottsche’s conjecture using the algebraic cobordism group of line bundles on surfaces and degeneration of Hilbert schemes of points. In addition, we prove the G¨ottsche-Yau-Zaslow Formula which expresses the generating function of the numbers of nodal curves in terms of quasimodular forms and two unknown series.

We investigate a problem of approximation of a large class of nonlinear expressions$f$($x, u$, ∇$u$), including polyconvex functions. Here$u$: Ω→$R$^{$m$}, Ω⊂$R$^{$n$}, is a mapping from the Sobolev space$W$^{$1,p$}. In particular, when$p=n$, we obtain the approximation by mappings which are continuous, differentiable a.e. and, if in addition$n=m$, satisfy the Luzin condition. From the point of view of applications such mappings are almost as good as Lipschitz mappings. As far as we know, for the nonlinear problems that we consider, no natural approximation results were known so far. The results about the approximation of$f$($x, u$, ∇$u$) are consequences of the main result of the paper, Theorem 1.3, on a very strong approximation of Sobolev functions by locally weakly monotone functions.
