In this paper we derive optimal growth estimates on the potential functions of complete noncompact shrinking solitons. Based on this, we prove that a complete noncompact gradient shrinking Ricci soliton has at most Euclidean volume growth. This latter result can be viewed as an analog of the well-known volume comparison theorem of Bishop that a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature has at most Euclidean volume growth.

In this paper we analyze the explicit Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) methods for the semilinear hyperbolic system of a correlated random walk model describing movement of animals and cells in biology. The RKDG methods use a third order explicit total-variation-diminishing Runge-Kutta (TVDRK3) time discretization and upwinding numerical fluxes. By using the energy method, under a standard CFL condition, we obtain $L^2$ stability for general solutions and a priori error estimates when the solutions are smooth enough. The theoretical results are proved for piecewise polynomials with any degree $k \geq 1$. Finally, since the solutions to this system are non-negative, we discuss a positivity-preserving limiter to preserve positivity without compromising accuracy. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate these RKDG methods.

A time-dependent Hermite-Galerkin spectral method (THGSM) is investigated in this paper for the nonlinear convection-diffusion equations in the unbounded domains. The time-dependent scaling factor and translating factor are introduced in the definition of the generalized Hermite functions (GHF). As a consequence, the THGSM based on these GHF has many advantages, not only in theoretical proofs, but also in numerical implementations. The stability and spectral convergence of our proposed method have been established in this paper. The Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers (KdVB) equation and its special cases, including the heat equation and the Burgers' equation, as the examples, have been numerically solved by our method. The numerical results are presented, and it surpasses the existing methods in accuracy. Our theoretical proof of the spectral convergence has been supported by the numerical results.
