In this paper, we propose and analyze a nodal-continuous and $H^1$-conforming finite element method for the numerical computation of Maxwell's equations, with singular solution in a fractional order Sobolev space $H^r(\Omega)$, where $r$ may take any value in the most interesting interval $(0, 1)$. The key feature of the method is that mass-lumping linear finite element $L^2$ projections act on the curl and divergence partial differential operators so that the singular solution can be sought in a setting of $L^2(\Omega)$ space. We shall use the nodal-continuous linear finite elements, enriched with one element bubble in each element, to approximate the singular and non-$H^1$ solution. Discontinuous and nonhomogeneous media are allowed in the method. Some error estimates are given and a number of numerical experiments for source problems as well as eigenvalue problems are presented to illustrate the superior performance of the proposed method.

We present a 3D topological picture-language for quantum information. Our approach combines charged excitations carried by strings, with topological properties that arise from embedding the strings in the interior of a 3D manifold with boundary. A quon is a composite that acts as a particle. Specifically, a quon is a hemisphere containing a neutral pair of open strings with opposite charge. We interpret multiquons and their transformations in a natural way. We obtain a type of relation, a string–genus “joint relation,” involving both a string and the 3D manifold. We use the joint relation to obtain a topological interpretation of the C* Hopf algebra relations, which are widely used in tensor networks. We obtain a 3D representation of the controlled NOT (CNOT) gate that is considerably simpler than earlier work, and a 3D topological protocol for teleportation.

We prove that torsion-free G2 structures are (weakly) dynamically stable along the Laplacian flow for closed G2 structures. More precisely, given a torsion-free G2 structure φ on a compact 7-manifold, the Laplacian flow with initial value cohomologous and sufficiently close to φ will converge to a torsion-free G2 structure which is in the orbit of φ under diffeomorphisms isotopic to the identity. We deduce, from fundamental work of Joyce [18], that the Laplacian flow starting at any closed G2 structure with sufficiently small torsion will exist for all time and converge to a torsion-free G2 structure.

The holonomy of the ambient metrics of Nurowski’s conformal structures associated to generic real-analytic 2-plane fields on oriented 5-manifolds is investigated. It is shown that the holonomy is always contained in the split real form G2 of the exceptional Lie group, and is equal to G2 for an open dense set of 2-plane fields given by explicit conditions. In particular, this gives an infinitedimensional family of metrics of holonomy equal to split G2. These results generalize work of Leistner-Nurowski. The inclusion of the holonomy in G2 is established by proving an ambient extension theorem for parallel tractors in the context of conformal geometry in general signature and dimension, which is expected to be of independent interest.

We study the energy-critical focusing non-linear wave equation, with data in the energy space, in dimensions 3, 4 and 5. We prove that for Cauchy data of energy smaller than the one of the static solution$W$which gives the best constant in the Sobolev embedding, the following alternative holds. If the initial data has smaller norm in the homogeneous Sobolev space$H$^{1}than the one of$W$, then we have global well-posedness and scattering. If the norm is larger than the one of$W$, then we have break-down in finite time.
