In this work we introduce a formulation for a non-local Hessian that combines the ideas of higher-order and non-local regularization for image restoration, extending the idea of non-local gradients to higher-order derivatives. By carefully choosing the weights, the model allows to improve on the current state of the art higher-order method, Total Generalized Variation, with respect to overall quality and particularly close to jumps in the data. In the spirit of recent work by Brezis et al., our formulation also has analytic implications: for a suitable choice of weights, it can be shown to converge to classical second-order regularizers, and in fact allows a novel characterization of higher-order Sobolev and BV spaces.

We consider a multidimensional version of an inequality due to Leray as a substitute for Hardy’s inequality in the case $p = n ≥ 2$. In this paper we provide an optimal Sobolev-type improvement of this substitute, analogous to the corresponding improvements obtained for $p = 2 < n$ in S. Filippas, A. Tertikas, Optimizing improved Hardy inequalities, J. Funct. Anal. 192 (1) (2002) 186–233, and for $p > n ≥ 1$ in G. Psaradakis, An optimal Hardy-Morrey inequality, Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations 45 (3-4) (2012) 421–441.

In this paper, we study the mapping properties of the classical Riesz potentials acting on $L^p$-spaces. In the supercritical exponent, we obtain new “almost” Lipschitz continuity estimates for these and related potentials (including, for instance, the logarithmic potential). Applications of these continuity estimates include the deduction of new regularity estimates for distributional solutions to Poisson’s equation, as well as a proof of the supercritical Sobolev embedding theorem first shown by Brezis and Wainger in 1980.

In this paper, we study a new class of fractional partial differential equations which are obtained by minimizing variational problems in fractional Sobolev spaces. We introduce a notion of fractional gradient which has the potential to extend to many classical results in the Sobolev spaces to the nonlocal and fractional setting in a natural way.

Let X be an algebraic variety and let S be a tropical variety associated to X. We study the tropicalization map from the moduli space of stable maps into X to the moduli space of tropical curves in S. We prove that it is a continuous map and that its image is compact and polyhedral. Loosely speaking, when we deform algebraic curves in X, the associated tropical curves in S deform continuously; moreover, the locus of realizable tropical curves inside the space of all tropical curves is compact and polyhedral. Our main tools are Berkovich spaces, formal models, balancing conditions, vanishing cycles and quantifier elimination for rigid subanalytic sets.
