Many problems in nature, being characterized by a parameter, are of interest both with a fixed parameter value and with the parameter approaching an asymptotic limit. Numerical schemes that are convergent in both regimes offer robust discretizations, which can be highly desirable in practice. The asymptotically compatible schemes studied in an earlier published version of this paper meet such objectives for a class of parametrized problems. An extended version of the abstract mathematical framework is established rigorously here, together with applications to the numerical solution of both nonlocal models and their local limits. In particular, the framework can be applied to nonlocal models of diffusion and a general state-based peridynamic system parametrized by the horizon radius. Recent findings have exposed the risks associated with some discretizations of nonlocal models when the horizon radius is proportional to the discretization parameter. Thus, it is desirable to develop asymptotically compatible schemes for such models so as to offer robust numerical discretizations to problems involving nonlocal interactions on multiple scales. This work provides new insight in this regard through a careful analysis of related conforming finite element discretizations, and the finding is valid under minimal regularity assumptions on exact solutions. It reveals that for the nonlocal models under consideration and their local limit, as long as the finite element space contains continuous piecewise linear functions, the Galerkin finite element approximation is always asymptotically compatible. For piecewise constant finite elements, whenever applicable, it is shown that a correct local limit solution can also be obtained as long as the discretization (mesh) parameter decreases faster than the modeling (horizon) parameter does. These results can be used to guide future computational studies of nonlocal problems. We develop a general approach that uses holomorphic 1-forms to parameterize anatomical surfaces with complex (possibly branching) topology. Rather than evolve the surface geometry to a plane or sphere, we instead use the fact that all orientable surfaces are Riemann surfaces and admit conformal structures, which induce special curvilinear coordinate systems on the surfaces. Based on Riemann surface structure, we can then canonically partition the surface into patches. Each of these patches can be conformally mapped to a parallelogram. The resulting surface subdivision and the parameterizations of the components are intrinsic and stable. To illustrate the technique, we computed conformal structures for several types of anatomical surfaces in MRI scans of the brain, including the cortex, hippocampus, and lateral ventricles. Many iterative methods in optimization are fixed-point iterations with averaged operators. As such methods converge at an O(1/k) rate with the constant determined by the averagedness coefficient, establishing small averagedness coefficients for operators is of broad interest. In this paper, we show that the averagedness coefficients of the composition of averaged operators by Ogura and Yamada (Numer Func Anal Opt 32(1–2):113–137, 2002) and the threeoperator splitting by Davis and Yin (Set Valued Var Anal 25(4):829–858, 2017) are tight. The analysis relies on the scaled relative graph, a geometric tool recently proposed by Ryu, Hannah, and Yin (arXiv:1902.09788, 2019).

We prove the vanishing of the top Chern classes of the moduli of rank three stable vector bundles on a smooth Riemann surface. More precisely, the Chern class ci for i > 6g − 5 of the moduli spaces of rank three vector bundles of degree one and two on a genus g smooth Riemann surface all vanish. This generalizes the rank two case, conjectured by Newstead and Ramanan and proved by Gieseker.
