The human cerebellum has recently been discovered to contribute to cognition and emotion beyond the planning and execution of movement, suggesting its functional heterogeneity. We aimed to identify the functional parcellation of the cerebellum using information from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). For this, we introduced a new data-driven decomposition-based functional parcellation algorithm, called Sparse Dictionary Learning Clustering (SDLC). SDLC integrates dictionary learning, sparse representation of rs-fMRI, and k-means clustering into one optimization problem. The dictionary is comprised of an over-complete set of time course signals, with which a sparse representation of rs-fMRI signals can be constructed. Cerebellar functional regions were then identified using k-means clustering based on the sparse representation of rs-fMRI signals. We solved SDLC using a multi-block hybrid proximal alternating method that guarantees strong convergence. We evaluated the reliability of SDLC and benchmarked its classification accuracy against other clustering techniques using simulated data. We then demonstrated that SDLC can identify biologically reasonable functional regions of the cerebellum as estimated by their cerebello-cortical functional connectivity. We further provided new insights into the cerebello-cortical functional organization in children.

In this paper, we propose two algorithms, namely the extrapolated proximal iterative hard thresholding (EPIHT) algorithm and the EPIHT algorithm with line-search, for solving the $\ell_0$-norm regularized wavelet frame balanced approach for image restoration. Under the theoretical framework of Kurdyka–Łojasiewicz property, we show that the sequences generated by the two algorithms converge to a local minimizer with linear convergence rate. Moreover, extensive numerical experiments on sparse signal reconstruction and wavelet frame based image restoration problems including CT reconstruction, image deblur, demonstrate the improvement of $\ell_0$-norm based regularization models over some prevailing ones, as well as the computational efficiency of the proposed algorithms.

A sensor pixel integrates optical intensity across its extent, and we explore the role that this integration plays in phase space tomography. The literature is inconsistent in its treatment of this integration—some approaches model this integration explicitly, some approaches are ambiguous about whether this integration is taken into account, and still some approaches assume pixel values to be point samples of the optical intensity. We show that making a point-sample assumption results in apodization of and thus systematic error in the recovered ambiguity function, leading to underestimating the overall degree of coherence. We explore the severity of this effect using a Gaussian Schell-model source and discuss when this effect, as opposed to noise, is the dominant source of error in the retrieved state of coherence.

The mutual intensity and its equivalent phase-space representations quantify an optical field's state of coherence and are important tools in the study of light propagation and dynamics, but they can only be estimated indirectly from measurements through a process called coherence retrieval, otherwise known as phase-space tomography. As practical considerations often rule out the availability of a complete set of measurements, coherence retrieval is usually a challenging high-dimensional ill-posed inverse problem. In this paper, we propose a trace-regularized optimization model for coherence retrieval and a provably convergent adaptive accelerated proximal gradient algorithm for solving the resulting problem. Applying our model and algorithm to both simulated and experimental data, we demonstrate an improvement in reconstruction quality over previous models as well as an increase in convergence speed compared to existing first-order methods.

Recent technical advances lead to the coupling of PET and MRI scanners, enabling one to acquire functional and anatomical data simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a tight frame based PET-MRI joint reconstruction model via the joint sparsity of tight frame coefficients. In addition, a nonconvex balanced approach is adopted to take the different regularities of PET and MRI images into account. To solve the nonconvex and nonsmooth model, a proximal alternating minimization algorithm is proposed, and the global convergence is present based on the Kurdyka--Łojasiewicz property. Finally, the numerical experiments show that our proposed models achieve better performance over the existing PET-MRI joint reconstruction models.
