In this paper, a new type of finite difference Hermite weighted essentially non-oscillatory (HWENO) schemes are constructed for solving Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) equations. Point values of both the solution and its first derivatives are used in the HWENO reconstruction and evolved via time advancing. While the evolution of the solution is still through the classical numerical fluxes to ensure convergence to weak solutions, the evolution of the first derivatives of the solution is through a simple dimension-by-dimension non-conservative procedure to gain efficiency. The main advantages of this new scheme include its compactness in the spatial field and its simplicity in the reconstructions. Extensive numerical experiments in one and two dimensional cases are performed to verify the accuracy, high resolution and efficiency of this new scheme.

We study the asymptotic spreading of KolmogorovPetrovskyPiskunov (KPP) fronts in spacetime random incompressible flows in dimension d> 1. We prove that if the flow field is stationary, ergodic, and obeys a suitable moment condition, the large time front speeds (spreading rates) are deterministic in all directions for compactly supported initial data. The flow field can become unbounded at large times. The front speeds are characterized by the convex rate function governing large deviations of the associated diffusion in the random flow. Our proofs are based on the Harnack inequality, an application of the sub-additive ergodic theorem, and the construction of comparison functions. Using the variational principles for the front speed, we obtain general lower and upper bounds of front speeds in terms of flow statistics. The bounds show that front speed enhancement in incompressible flows can grow at most linearly in the root mean square amplitude of the flows, and may have much slower growth due to rapid temporal decorrelation of the flows.

In the first paper of this series, “Electrodynamics and the Gauss Linking Integral on the 3-sphere and in Hyperbolic 3-space,” we developed a steady-state version of classical electrodynamics in these two spaces, including explicit formulas for the vector-valued Green’s operator, explicit formulas of Biot-Savart type for the magnetic field, and a corresponding Amp`ere’s Law contained in Maxwell’s equations, and then used these to obtain explicit inte- gral formulas for the linking number of two disjoint closed curves. In this second paper, we obtain integral formulas for twisting, writhing, and helicity, and prove that link = twist + writhe on the 3-sphere and in hyperbolic 3-space. We then use these results to derive upper bounds for the helicity of vector fields and lower bounds for the first eigenvalue of the curl operator on subdomains of these two spaces. In this paper, we study the superconvergence of the error for the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) finite element method for one-dimensional linear parabolic equations when the alternating flux is used. We prove that if we apply piecewise $k$-th degree polynomials, the error between the LDG solution and the exact solution is ($k+2$)-th order superconvergent at the Radau points with suitable initial discretization. Moreover, we also prove the LDG solution is ($k+2$)-th order superconvergent for the error to a particular projection of the exact solution. Even though we only consider periodic boundary condition, this boundary condition is not essential, since we do not use Fourier analysis. Our analysis is valid for arbitrary regular meshes and for $\mathcal{P}^k$ polynomials with arbitrary $k\geq1$. We perform numerical experiments to demonstrate that the superconvergence rates proved in this paper are sharp.
