In this paper, we analyze the stability of the fourth order Runge-Kutta method for integrating semi-discrete approximations of time-dependent partial differential equations. Our study focuses on linear problems and covers general semi-bounded spatial discretizations. A counter example is given to show that the classical four-stage fourth order Runge-Kutta method can not preserve the one-step strong stability, even though the ordinary differential equation system is energy-decaying. But with an energy argument, we show that the strong stability property holds in two steps under an appropriate time step constraint. Based on this fact, the stability extends to general well-posed linear systems. As an application, we utilize the results to examine the stability of the fourth order Runge-Kutta approximations of several specific method of lines schemes for hyperbolic problems, including the spectral Galerkin method and the discontinuous Galerkin method.

We consider a class of time dependent second order partial differential equations governed by a decaying entropy. The solution usually corresponds to a density distribution, hence positivity (non-negativity) is expected. This class of problems covers important cases such as Fokker-Planck type equations and aggregation models, which have been studied intensively in the past decades. In this paper, we design a high order discontinuous Galerkin method for such problems. If the interaction potential is not involved, or the interaction is defined by a smooth kernel, our semi-discrete scheme admits an entropy inequality on the discrete level. Furthermore, by applying the positivity-preserving limiter, our fully discretized scheme produces non-negative solutions for all cases under a time step constraint. Our method also applies to two dimensional problems on Cartesian meshes. Numerical examples are given to confirm the high order accuracy for smooth test cases and to demonstrate the effectiveness for preserving long time asymptotics.

Abstract Kontsevich and Soibelman defined DonaldsonThomas invariants of a 3d CalabiYau category equipped with a stability condition [41]. Any cluster variety gives rise to a family of such categories. Their DT invariants are encapsulated in a single formal automorphism of the cluster variety, called the DT-transformation. Given a stability condition, the DT-transformation allows to recover the DT-invariants. Let S be an oriented surface with punctures and a finite number of special points on the boundary, considered modulo isotopy. It gives rise to a moduli space X P G L m, S, closely related to the moduli space of P G L m-local systems on S, which carries a canonical cluster Poisson variety structure [13]. For each puncture of S, there is a birational Weyl group action on the space X P G L m, S. We prove that it is given by cluster Poisson transformations. In the discrete case, surfaces are represented as piecewise linear triangle meshes. Since the Riemannian metric and the Gaussian curvature are discretized as the edge lengths and the angle deficits, the discrete Ricci flow can be defined as the deformation of edge lengths driven by the discrete curvature. We invented numerical algorithms to compute Riemannian metrics with prescribed Gaussian curvatures using discrete Ricci flow. We also showed broad applications using discrete Ricci flow in graphics, geometric modeling, and medical imaging, such as surface parameterization, surface matching, manifold splines, and construction of geometric structures on general surfaces.
