A discrete conformality for polyhedral metrics on surfaces is introduced in this paper which generalizes earlier work on the subject. It is shown that each polyhedral metric on a surface is discrete conformal to a constant curvature polyhedral metric which is unique up to scaling. Furthermore, the constant curvature metric can be found using a discrete Yamabe flow with surgery.

A discrete conformality for hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces is introduced in this paper. This discrete conformality is shown to be computable. It is proved that each hyperbolic polyhedral metric on a closed surface is discrete conformal to a unique hyperbolic polyhedral metric with a given discrete curvature satisfying Gauss-Bonnet formula. Furthermore, the hyperbolic polyhedral metric with given curvature can be obtained using a discrete Yamabe flow with surgery. In particular, each hyperbolic polyhedral metric on a closed surface with negative Euler characteristic is discrete conformal to a unique hyperbolic metric.

Automatic hexahedral mesh generation plays a fundamental role in CAD/CAE fields, especially for IGA (isogeometric analysis). Recently, an automatic hex-mesh generation method has been proposed, which is based on the equivalence among three key concepts: colorable quadrilateral meshes, finite measured foliations and Strebel differentials. This work focuses on the computational aspect of Strebel differentials on high genus surfaces, which is based on graph-valued harmonic mapping. The algorithmic pipeline is as follows: first, the user inputs an admissible curve system, which induces a cylindric-decomposition graph; then the user specifies the lengths of the edges of the graph; third, the algorithm finds the unique harmonic map from the surface to the metric graph by a non-linear heat flow; finally, the harmonic map induces a Strebel differential, which can be further utilized to generate the hex-mesh. The method has solid theoretic foundation, which guarantees the existence and the uniqueness of the graph-valued harmonic map. The algorithm is capable of handling surfaces with complicated topologies, and producing all possible Strebel differentials on the surface. The user has full control of the combinatorial type and the geometry of the Strebel differential. The computational pipeline is automatic. The experimental results show the efficiency and efficacy of the algorithm, and demonstrate the great potential for automating the structured hexahedral mesh generation.

In this paper, we study time-periodic perturbation of classical systems with two degrees of freedom. A transition chain is established, by passing through small neighborhood of double resonant point, to connect any two cohomology classes corresponding to resonant frequencies. Applying the result to nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems with three degrees of freedom, one obtains a transition chain along which one is able to construct diffusion orbits suggested by Arnold in [A66].

A general framework for constructions of endoscopy correspondences via automorphic integral transforms for classical groups is formulated in terms of the Arthur classification of the discrete spectrum of square-integrable automorphic forms, which is called the Principle of Endoscopy Correspondences, extending the well-known Howe Principle of Theta Correspondences. This suggests another principle, called the (τ, b)-theory of automorphic forms of classical groups, to reorganize and extend the series of work of Piatetski- Shapiro, Rallis, Kudla and others on standard L-functions of classical groups and theta correspondence.

We prove Kudla-Rallis conjecture on ¯rst occurrences of local theta correspondence, for all irreducible dual pairs of type I and all local ¯elds of characteristic zero.

We consider the following mean field equation: $$\Delta_{g}v+\rho\left(\frac{h^*e^v}{\int_Mh^*e^v}-1\right)=4\pi\sum_{j=1}^N\alpha_j(\delta_{q_j}-1)$$ on M, where M is a compact Riemann surface with volume 1, $h^*$ is a positive $C^1$ function on M, and  $\alpha_j$ are constants satisfying $\alpha_j>-1$. In this paper, we derive the topological degree counting formula for noncritical values of $\rho$. We also give several applications of this formula, including existence of curvature +1 metric with conic singularities, doubly periodic solutions of electroweak theory, and a special case of self-gravitating strings.

We study the rigidity of polyhedral surfaces and the moduli space of polyhedral surfaces using variational principles. Curvaturelike quantities for polyhedral surfaces are introduced and are shown to determine the polyhedral metric up to isometry. The action functionals in the variational approaches are derived from the cosine law. They can be considered as 2-dimensional counterparts of the Schlaefli formula.

We establish the global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem for the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in three spatial dimensions with smooth initial data that are of small energy but possibly large oscillations with constant state as far field, which could be either vacuum or nonvacuum. The initial density is allowed to vanish, and the spatial measure of the set of vacuum can be arbitrarily large; in particular, the initial density can even have compact support. These results generalize previous results on classical solutions for initial densities being strictly away from vacuum and are the first for global classical solutions that may have large oscillations and can contain vacuum states. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc
