The purpose of this paper is to provide global existence and uniqueness results for a family of fluid transport equations by establishing convergence results for the particle method applied to these equations. The considered family of PDEs is a collection of strongly nonlinear equations which yield traveling wave solutions and can be used to model a variety of flows in fluid dynamics. We apply a particle method to the studied evolutionary equations and provide a new self-contained method for proving its convergence. The latter is accomplished by using the concept of space-time bounded variation and the associated compactness properties. From this result, we prove the existence of a unique global weak solution in some special cases and obtain stronger regularity properties of the solution than previously established.

Abstract The bipolar Navier-Stokes-Poisson system (BNSP) has been used to simulate the transport of charged particles (ions and electrons for instance) under the influence of electrostatic force governed by the self-consistent Poisson equation. The optimal L 2 time convergence rate for the global classical solution is obtained for a small initial perturbation of the constant equilibrium state. It is shown that due to the electric field, the difference of the charge densities tend to the equilibrium states at the optimal rate (1+ t)-3 4 in L 2-norm, while the individual momentum of the charged particles converges at the optimal rate (1+ t)-1 4 which is slower than the rate (1+ t)-3 4 for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations (NS). In this article, we investigate the global stability of the wave patterns with the superposition of viscous contact wave and rarefaction wave for the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a free boundary. It is shown that for the ideal polytropic gas, the superposition of the viscous contact wave with rarefaction wave is nonlinearly stable for the free boundary problem under the large initial perturbations for any > 1 with being the adiabatic exponent provided that the wave strength is suitably small.
