We study the initial value problem of the thermal-diffusive combustion systemu 1, t= u 1, x, x u 1 u 2 2, u 2, t= du 2, xx+ u 1 u 2 2, x R 1, for non-negative spatially decaying initial data of arbitrary size and for any positive constantd. We show that if the initial data decay to zero sufficiently fast at infinity, then the solution (u 1, u 2) converges to a self-similar solution of the reduced systemu 1, t= u 1, xx u 1 u 2 2, u 2, t= du 2, xx, in the large time limit. In particular, u 1 decays to zero like O (t 1/2 ), where> 0 is an anomalous exponent depending on the initial data, andu 2 decays to zero with normal rate O (t 1/2). The idea of the proof is to combine the a priori estimates for the decay of global solutions with the renormalization group method for establishing the self-similarity of the solutions in the large time limit.

We consider a system coupling the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations to the Vlasov–Fokker–Planck equation. Such a problem arises in the description of particulate flows. We design a numerical scheme to simulate the behavior of the system. This scheme is asymptotic-preserving, thus efficient in both the kinetic and hydrodynamic regimes. It has a numerical stability condition controlled by the non-stiff convection operator, with an implicit treatment of the stiff drag term and the Fokker–Planck operator. Yet, consistent to a standard asymptotic-preserving Fokker–Planck solver or an incompressible Navier–Stokes solver, only the conjugate–gradient method and fast Poisson and Helmholtz solvers are needed. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and asymptotic behavior of the scheme, with several interesting applications.

It is well-known in the combustion community that curvature effect in general slows down ame propagation speeds because it smooths out wrinkled ames. However, such a folklore has never been justied rigorously. In this paper, as the rst theoretical result in this direction, we prove that the turbulent ame speed (an eective burning velocity) is decreasing with respect to the curvature diusivity (Markstein number) for shear flows in the well-known G-equation model. Our proof involves several novel and rather sophisticated inequalities arising from the nonlinear structure of the equation. On a related fundamental issue, we solve the selection problem of weak solutions or nd the "physical fluctuations" when the Markstein number goes to zero and solutions approach those of the inviscid G-equation model. The limiting solution is given by a closed form analytical formula.
