In this paper, we give an instability criterion for the Prandtl equations in three-dimensional space, which shows that the monotonicity condition on tangential velocity fields is not sufficient for the well-posedness of the three-dimensional Prandtl equations, in contrast to the classical well-posedness theory of the two-dimensional Prandtl equations under the Oleinik monotonicity assumption. Both linear stability and nonlinear stability are considered. This criterion shows that the monotonic shear flow is linearly stable for the three-dimensional Prandtl equations if and only if the tangential velocity field direction is invariant with respect to the normal variable, and this result is an exact complement to our recent work (A well-posedness theory for the Prandtl equations in three space variables. arXiv:1405.5308 , 2014) on the well-posedness theory for the three-dimensional Prandtl

We consider a one-dimensional model biodegradation system consisting of two reactionadvection equations for nutrient and pollutant concentrations and a rate equation for biomass. The hydrodynamic dispersion is ignored. Under an explicit condition on the decay and growth rates of biomass, the system can be approximated by two component models by setting biomass kinetics to equilibrium. We derive closed form solutions for constant speed traveling fronts for the reduced two component models and compare their profiles in homogeneous media. For a spatially random velocity field, we introduce travel time and study statistics of degradation fronts via representations in terms of the travel time probability density function (<i>pdf</i>) and the traveling front profiles. L03existence globale des solutions du problème de Cauchy est étudiée sous certaines conditions. Précisément, pour le système chimiotactisme–Navier–Stokes en deux dimensions d03espace, nous obtenons l03existence globale pour des données grandes. En trois dimensions d03espace, nous démontrons l03existence globale des solutions faibles pour le système chimiotactisme–Stokes avec une diffusion non-linéaire de la densité des cellules.

In this paper we study the effects of small viscosity term and the far-field boundary conditions for systems of convection-diffusion equations in the zero viscosity limit. The far-field boundary conditions are classified and the corresponding solution structures are analyzed. It is confirmed that the Neumann type of far-field boundary condition is preferred. On the other hand, we also identify a class of improperly coupled boundary conditions which lead to catastrophic reflection waves dominating the inlet in the zero viscosity limit. The analysis is performed on the linearized convection-diffusion model which well describes the behavior at the far field for many physical and engineering systems such as fluid dynamical equations and electro-magnetic equations. The results obtained here should provide some theoretical guidance for designing effective far field boundary conditions.
