We study the large time asymptotic speeds (turbulent flame speeds sT) of the simplified HamiltonJacobi (HJ) models arising in turbulent combustion. One HJ model is G-equation describing the front motion law in the form of local normal velocity equal to a constant (laminar speed) plus the normal projection of fluid velocity. In level set formulation, G-equations are HJ equations with convex (L1 type) but non-coercive Hamiltonians. The other is the quadratically nonlinear (L2 type) inviscid HJ model of MajdaSouganidis derived from the KolmogorovPetrovskyPiskunov reactive fronts. Motivated by a question posed by Embid, Majda and Souganidis (1995)[10], we compare the turbulent flame speeds sTs from these inviscid HJ models in two-dimensional cellular flows or a periodic array of steady vortices via sharp asymptotic estimates in the regime of large amplitude. The estimates are obtained by analyzing the action minimizing trajectories in the Lagrangian representation of solutions (Lax formula and its extension) in combination with delicate gradient bound of viscosity solutions to the associated cell problem of homogenization. Though the inviscid turbulent flame speeds share the same leading order asymptotics, their difference due to nonlinearities is identified as a subtle double logarithm in the large flow amplitude from the sharp growth laws. We prove the existence of the global weak entropy solution to the Doi–Saintillan–Shelley model for active and passive rod-like particle suspensions, which couples a Fokker–Planck equation with the incompressible Navier–Stokes or Stokes equation, under the no-flux boundary conditions, L2(Ω;L1(Sd611))L2(Ω;L1(Sd611)) initial data, and finite initial entropy for the particle distribution function in two and three dimensions. Furthermore, for the model with the Stokes equation, we obtain the global L2(Ω×Sd611)L2(Ω×Sd611) weak solution in two and three dimensions and the uniqueness in two dimension.

We study a continuum model for epitaxial growth of thin films in which the slope of mound structure of film surface increases. This model is a diffusion equation for the surface height profile h which is assumed to satisfy the periodic boundary condition. The equation happens to possess a Liapunov or �free-energy� functional. This functional consists of the term |? h|2, which represents the surface diffusion, and - log (1 + |? h|2), which describes the effect of kinetic asymmetry in the adatom attachment-detachment. We first prove for large time t that the interface width---the standard deviation of the height profile---is bounded above by O(t1/2), the averaged gradient is bounded above by O(t1/4), and the averaged energy is bounded below by O(- log t). We then consider a small coefficient e2 of |? h|2 with e = 1/L and L the linear size of the underlying system, and study the energy asymptotics in the large system limit e ? 0. We show that global minimizers of the free-energy functional exist for each e>0, the L2-norm of the gradient of any global minimizer scales as O(1/e), and the global minimum energy scales as O( log e). The existence of global energy minimizers and a scaling argument are used to construct a sequence of equilibrium solutions with different wavelengths. Finally, we apply our minimum energy estimates to derive bounds in terms of the linear system size L for the saturation interface width and the corresponding saturation time.

The global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions to the Boltzmann equation without angular cut-off is proved under the condition that the initial data is in some Sobolev space. In addition, the solutions thus obtained are shown to be positive and C in all variables. One of the key observations is the introduction of a new important norm related to the singularity in the cross section of the collision operator. This norm captures the essential property of the singularity and yields precisely the dissipation description of the linearized collision operator through the celebrated H-theorem.

In this paper, we study the global well-posedness of the 2D compressible NavierStokes equations with large initial data and vacuum. It is proved that if the shear viscosity<i></i> is a positive constant and the bulk viscosity <i></i> is the power function of the density, that is, <i></i>(<i></i>) = <i></i> ^<i></i> with <i></i> &gt; 3, then the 2D compressible NavierStokes equations with the periodic boundary conditions on the torus T 2 admit a unique global classical solution (<i>, u</i>) which may contain vacuums in an open set of T 2 . Note that the initial data can be arbitrarily large to contain vacuum states.
