We study a Maxwell-Bloch system describing the dynamics of single-longitudinal Raman lasers in the two transverse space dimensions. Raman lasing is generated by a coherent external pump laser, as a three-wave interaction involving two optical and one material wave. On the other hand, a two-level laser involves incoherent external pumping through, for example, an electrical discharge or flashlamp. Raman lasers have the advantage of being tunable and display a novel explicit nonlinear detuning between the pump and laser emission frequencies. Consequently these lasers exhibit much richer nonlinear dynamics. We establish the global existence of classical solutions, and show that for periodic domains the dynamics is governed by a global smooth attractor of finite dimensions. The purpose of this paper is to study the dynamics of the interaction among a special class of solutions of the one-dimensional Camassa–Holm equation. The equation yields soliton solutions whose identity is preserved through nonlinear interactions. These solutions are characterized by a discontinuity at the peak in the wave shape and are thus called peakon solutions. We apply a particle method to the Camassa–Holm equation and show that the nonlinear interaction among the peakon solutions resembles an elastic collision, i.e., the total energy and momentum of the system before the peakon interaction is equal to the total energy and momentum of the system after the collision. From this result, we provide several numerical illustrations which support the analytical study, as well as showcase the merits of using a particle method to simulate solutions to the Camassa–Holm equation under a wide class of initial data.

Abstract We study the GinzburgLandau equation on the plane with initial data being the product of n wellseparated+ 1 vortices and spatially decaying perturbations. If the separation distances are O ( 1), l, we prove that the n vortices do not move on the time scale O(^2),=o(1\over); instead, they move on the time scale O(^-21\over) according to the law j= xj W, W= l j log| xl xj|, xj=(j, j) 2, the location of the jth vortex. The main ingredients of our proof consist of estimating the large space behavior of solutions, a monotonicity inequality for the energy density of solutions, and energy comparisons. Combining these, we overcome the infinite energy difficulty of the planar vortices to establish the dynamical law. John & Wiley Sons, Inc.

We consider the zero heat conductivity limit to a contact discontinuity for the mono-dimensional full compressible Navier--Stokes--Fourier system. The method is based on the relative entropy method and does not assume any smallness conditions on the discontinuity nor on the bounded variation norm of the initial data. It is proved that for any viscosity , the solution of the compressible Navier--Stokes--Fourier system (with well-prepared initial value) converges, when the heat conductivity tends to zero, to the contact discontinuity solution to the corresponding Euler system. We obtain the decay rate . It implies that the heat conductivity dominates the dissipation in the regime of the limit to a contact discontinuity. This is the first result, based on the relative entropy, of an asymptotic limit to a discontinuous solution for a system.

We study the stability and oscillation of traveling fronts in a three-component, advection-reaction biodegradation model. The three components are pollutant, nutrient, and bacteria concentrations. Under an explicit condition on the biomass growth and decay coefficients, we derive reduced, two-component, semilinear hyperbolic models through a relaxation procedure, during which biomass is slaved to pollutant and nutrient concentration variables. The reduced two-component models resemble the Broadwell model of the discrete velocity gas. The traveling fronts of the reduced system are explicit and are expressed in terms of hyperbolic tangent function in the nutrient-deficient regime. We perform energy estimates to prove the asymptotic stability of these fronts under explicit conditions on the coefficients in the system.
