It is known that the singularity in the non-cutoff cross-section of the Boltzmann equation leads to the gain of regularity and gain of weight in the velocity variable. By defining and analyzing a non-isotropy norm which precisely captures the dissipation in the linearized collision operator, we give a new and precise coercivity estimate for the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation for general physical cross sections.

Large-time behavior of solutions to the inflow problem of full compressible NavierStokes equations is investigated on the half line \mathbf{R}_+=(0,+\infty). The wave structure, which contains four wavesthe transonic (or degenerate) boundary layer solution, the 1-rarefaction wave, the viscous 2-contact wave, and the 3-rarefaction wave to the inflow problemis described, and the asymptotic stability of the superposition of the above four wave patterns to the inflow problem of full compressible NavierStokes equations is proven under some smallness conditions. The proof is given by the elementary energy analysis based on the underlying wave structure. The main points in the proof are the treatments of the degeneracies in the transonic boundary layer solution and the wave interactions in the superposition wave.

This work is concerned with our recently developed formalism of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. This formalism extends the classical irreversible thermodynamics which leads to classical thermodynamics and can not describe physical phenomena with long relaxations. With the extended theory, we obtain a generalized hydrodynamic system which can be used to describe the non-Newtonian fluids, heat transfer beyond Fourier's law and fluid flow in very short temporal and spatial scales. We study the mathematical structure of the generalized hydrodynamic system and show that it possesses a nice conservation-dissipation structure and therefore is symmetrizable hyperbolic. Moreover, we rigorously justify that this generalized hydrodynamic system tends to the classical hydrodynamics when the relaxation times approach to zero. This shows that the classical hydrodynamics can be derived as an approximation of our generalized one.

We consider the self-adjoint Smilansky Hamiltonian H in L2 R2) associated with the formal differential expression -x2-1/2(y2+y2)-2y(x) in the sub-critical regime, (0, 1). We demonstrate the existence of resonances for H on a countable subfamily of sheets of the underlying Riemann surface whose distance from the physical sheet is finite. On such sheets, we find resonance free regions and characterize resonances for small > 0. In addition, we refine the previously known results on the bound states of H in the weak coupling regime (0+). In the proofs we use Birman-Schwinger principle for H, elements of spectral theory for Jacobi matrices, and the analytic implicit function theorem.

We characterize probability measure with finite moment of any order in terms of the symmetric difference operators of their Fourier transforms. By using our new characterization, we prove the continuity f (t, v)\in C ((0,\infty), L^ 1_ {2k-2+ }) , where f (t, v)\in C ((0,\infty), L^ 1_ {2k-2+ }) stands for the density of unique measure-valued solution f (t, v)\in C ((0,\infty), L^ 1_ {2k-2+ }) of the Cauchy problem for the homogeneous non-cutoff Boltzmann equation, with Maxwellian molecules, corresponding to a probability measure initial datum f (t, v)\in C ((0,\infty), L^ 1_ {2k-2+ }) satisfying\[\int| v|^{2k-2+ } dF_0 (v)<\infty, 0\leq < 2, k= 2, 3, 4,\cdots\] provided that f (t, v)\in C ((0,\infty), L^ 1_ {2k-2+ }) is not a single Dirac mass.
